It would be great if someone could make a proper computer version of SFB
There is. Its name is Starfleet Command. It's not turn based, but then, very few of commercial strategy games follow strictly their role models. Indeed if someone wants accurate version of some board game badly enough, he starts doing it by himself. Or take some existing open source game and start modifying it.

I have The Starfleet Command Games along with Orion Pirates and I thoroughly enjoy playing them. [:)]

but....

Although the basic ruleset is based on SFB, its Not really SFB.  [:(]

I would like to play a fleet battle with more than 3 ships and attacking a starbase fully protected by mine fields, drones fighters and its own battlefleet would be triffic.. for me at least [:)]

Space Empires IV is good fun for this though.

Cheers

It would be great if someone could make a proper computer version of SFB, it could be modular too. Starting of with 3 or four main races, Feds, Klingons, Romulan and Gorn or Kzinti. A few ships in each class with basic rules all of which could be added to in later modules. Graphics would not be that high a priority either, just keeping it at standard FSB game tokens would suffice for me.
Wrap it up with an editor in which yoo could build yer own custom senarios and ships and I would be first in line with mt credit card. It would aslo have to be turned based and the UI could be made to look like a tactical terminal with yoo as Admiral of the fleet etc. [:D]
Sigh I can dream [:)]
Cheers

You'd think a computer game company that had specialized experience in turn based games on a 2D hex playing field would explore this rebirth. Especially since they delved in other sci fi games.
Oh, and SSI got around the copyright by calling the Kingons Klargons and the Federation the Confederation, yet we all knew[;)] which is ok by me.

I was a playtester in the 80s and I actually appear in the SFB Stratgey guide credits. I got up to Captain writing tactics articles for Nexux magaizne.

I held "Rated Ace" status at tournuments until my ex-wife made me stop going in the early 90s.

At Origins I held the distiction of being the only person to win a game by using a probe as a weapon (slugfest we were both about to blow up) and I even hit a Kzinti with a scatter pack.

Star Fleet Command was a disappoitment due to the real time thing.

Federation and Empire, the stategic level version, would make a great turn based computer game.

F & E ... unplayable on a board , but a dream on computer.

Beware though , you would think there would be a good Star Wars universe game by now , 30 years after the release. Come to think of it just a good x-wing / tie fighter update wouldn't go amiss

Renegade Legionaire Interceptor was a pretty close turn based Star Ship Battles game. You could design your own ship and place your weaponry/engines/shield scope in the hard points and windows allowed for the size of the ship you chose. I think it was an 8 vs 8 on the random battle maps. Most things were modeled in like speed and turning speed and distance, evasive tactics to evade incoming missles, stuff like that. It looked pretty good on the Amiga 500, but, kinda crappy on the PC back then like most old dos games. I don't recall if it was multiplayer or not, seems like it should have been being turn based.
WE/I WANT 1:1 or something even 1:2 death animations in the KOIOS PANZER COMMAND SERIES don't forget Erik! ;) and Floating Paratroopers We grew up with Minor, Marginal and Decisive victories why rock the boat with Marginal, Decisive and Legendary?

Past few weeks I have played SFC2:OP with Orion Cartel. About week ago I played one mission which comes close what you describe. Objective was to destroy ISC station.

In addition of my 3 ships there were at least 2 other Orion ships and 2 Mirak ships. Between this combined task force was equal or greater number of ISC ships, mostly frigates, and dust clouds. By the time all ISC ships were blown up, there was around 10 undetonated mines. Fore shield of my ship was down, so I was stuck on dust cloud while allies attacked the station. This was probably largest scale single player mission I have ever played.

On-line campaigns are still played, but more players are needed. So get on-line and join either The Forge (when it is up and running) or Bartok's Basement.

Yes I had this , and it was very enjoyable. Only real problem was there was an imbalance in the weaponry. One side's {can't remember which} top spec ships were not a match for the other.

Still I remeber playing it for a good long while.
There was starbase combat and escort missions etc too if i remember correctly.

Has been since first of serie. I guess those are made by random mission generator to give player something to do in addition of scripted missions (like that assault against ISC station and mission The Ruse). I think Steel Panthers games have those too.

For me it comes down to newer games to explore. Let's face it: there already are more games than than anyone can play through in entire lifetime. Still tens new games are completed & published every day. Is there any point in making & buying new games?

If someone in here wants to take their starship out for a spin, call me, and we can plan a schedule. I have following games in the series:
Starfleet Command
Starfleet Command II: Empires at War
Starfleet Command II: Orion Pirates

+ free game:
EmptyEpsilon
