Though... this was not Russian movie per-se... it was only about Russians in Afganistan... (I think some "augmented" Augusta helicopeters were used to mimic Mi-24 BTW)...

<shrug> In that case, I deffinitely didnt see it. [:(]

Darn good film though.

What did everyone think of

Cross of iron ? ( i liked this quite a lot)
Enemy at the gates ? ( again enjoyed this one)

Can't recall any much newer ones than those 2 thats been any good , possibly excepting saving private ryan ( first 1/2 hour anyway).

All other recent ones imo have been utterly unwatchable (PH + U571 spring to mind).

The beast was a good movie on a low budget and yes it was a bit stereotypical and certainly propagandist , the mujahadeen are heroes ( imagine making that one these days [;)])

Havent seen Cross of Iron to my emrabassment.

Enemy at the Gates we had a discussion about in another thread. I thought it was pretty decent for a Hollywood flick....but ridiculously biased and full of all sorts of apocriphal BS.

Cross of iron is worth watching if you see a cheap copy or catch it on TV sometime. It's a tad moralistic but very grim and gritty, set in the crimea in '44 and its based on a squad of german infantry. poor sods get clobbered [;)]. makes a change from an allied perspective war flick.

Dont think I can recall seeing anything from that angle. Seems like an interesting watch.

There was a good Russian movie with that angle. It was about 4 guys and an antitank rifle in 1941 who get left to protect some arbitrary point on a map. In true Russian fashion it went on to explore the moral and psychological differences between 4 very different people but concluded with 3 of the guys duying in defense of Mother Russia all the same...except for one guy who deserted.

Yeah, and the clobbering is mainly done by their own side. The remnants *almost* make it to their lines, and then get massacred by "friendly" fire. Classic film...

"Stalingrad" is a fantastic film, too... But find it with subtitles, if you don't speak Ze German... Dubbing ruins every film.
