Guess Sinking Ship

I heard it is very difficult to swim in the oil and fuel of a large ship. I read that somewhere maybe the story of the USS Juneau but there was not much left of her though may have been the Indianapolis.

How long did it take to sink, after it rolled over? I think the problem of getting sucked under, is greatest if it goes down quick.

But if it rolled over, and then took another 15 minutes to sink, getting pulled under by the ship isn't your problem. Having your crewmate or debris whack you becuase you were on the wrong side of gravity would be the greater threat I believe.

Seriously guys this picture is pretty amazing IMO. Just looked at it again now. Just trying to imagine the mentality of standing there and doing that.
 
Surely whatever happened all those goes are gonners. I mean once it lists a few more degrees they will fall what 80-90 feet to the water? Can humans survive that? Let alone if the ship capsized onto them or pulled them under..................

In aviation "A" school we had to go off a 50' platform to simulate escape from a carrier deck. Not too bad if you keep your back straight and feet together (with boots on). Got on the Big E and found the flight deck was 90' from the water. [:)] Yeah, you can survive but you don't want to jump if you can keep from it...

The can survive the fall easily. It is the sudden stop at the end of the fall that causes a problem.[:D]

The truly amazing thing is that the photos survived. Think of the scarcity of phots taken by the Japanese during WWII that have survived compared to the plethora of American photos. Good photos from the Japanese side are few and far between.

I am pretty sure that the camera was held, probably unintentionally, in such a way as to accentuate the list. For one thing, holding the men on board for what was obviously futile work when the list had increased to the degree apparent would be criminal.

The captains/admirals had a penchant for going down with the ship but seems to me they generally allowed that the sailors should be allowed to abandon ship. On the other hand their Army compatriots had no problem ordering obviously futile Banzai Charges so maybe you're right.

Considering that 50% of the crew perished it's kind of amazing that these photos survived since the photographer obviously hung around for the end game.

Wish some Hollywood big-shot producer with a couple hundred-million to spare could see these shots....there's an excellent script for a movie just sitting and waiting in every book written about Leyte Gulf.

Can you imagine seeing a beautifully rendered CGI'd Zuikaku rolling over in it's final death throes on the big screen with the crew clinging onto anything to stay upright, screaming "BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!" until the ocean silences them all....

Must have been depressing as a Japanese sailor, assuming they realised the the degree to which they were on the losing end of the construction battle.
