Commander - Europe at War Storms Into Matrix Games

Commander – Europe at War Gold is the first in a series of high level turn based strategy games. The first game spans WW2, allowing players to control the axis or allied forces through the entire war in the European Theatre.

This is on my list as a definite buy.

Also, will probably pick up Carriers at War and a few others.

What is the turn/time scale? If it's seasonal the map seems too big. But too small for weekly! So, one assumes, it's monthly.
Also, some of the concepts seem, er, borrowed from Grigsby's opus. Notably the research screens. OTOH, I believe on a game this scale that hexes work better than the regional area system in WaW, especially for modern world conflicts with continuous, continent-wide fronts and mass conscription. Area movement works well in, for example, in the Ageod series. IMO, of course.

How about politics? From the screenies it looks like politics is kinda back-seat. Can one try to goad Spain into war or hold of US entry for a few turns?

So after you pay for the Research, it does nothing for your existing units? Well, as long as their a lot of turns (not 4 turns a year like GGWaW, which is a very cool game), then Research is fine. If there are not many turns, this will make Research not worth while.

No matter, when this comes out, I want to get this one. This one and WiF when that comes out.

Thanks

I have been following this for about 6 months over at Slitherine and it looks interesting in many ways but sure hope it walks SC2 as it was a real dud.

It is supposed to go Gold any day.

There are up to 6 levels of unit graphics. E.g. For Germany we use
Panzer IV C
Panzer IV H
Tiger I
Panther
Tiger II
Maus

Italy & France have their own level 1 units but then share the major nations graphics. Infantry & naval graphics dont change as there is nothing visually different to show. It's really the tanks & aircraft where you'll see the upgrades. It does look very cool :)
Sounds awesome, any similarity to Panzer General is also a plus in my book. This is a MUST buy for me...can't wait[&o]

I certainly hope not. Paratroops are an operational level item this is clearly a Strategic game. I'm guessing the Whole Market Garden Operation would fit in one hex.

Anyway I have been looking forward to this game for a long time. Watching it progress over at Slitherine, as the screen shots came out I was thinking at least it looks like what I was Hoping sc2 would look like. SC2 was killed for me the minute I saw the squares and the super bogus Nato symbols. It always amazes me when people mange to make NATO symbols look bad. Its like no one has figured out that the guys that want Nato symbols, want their game to look like a board game. Little men are OK and can be fun if they do not make the map look cluttered and are easey to tell apart. The CWE graphics look fine on both accounts.

I like the idea that you have to upgrade individual units vs all units getting an auto upgrade when you reach a tech level.

I am assuming one can play either side against the AI. Is this a correct assumption? I see there are convoys implemented but I am not sure from the game description how America plays her role. Just who are the players in the game? Axis vs. allies or is it broken down into nationality?

Sorry to ask such basic & naive questions.

Is rail road movement abstracted? You see a laberinth of muted looking 'lines' on the map; whether road or rail is unclear. Even, improbably, in N Africa. It seems to me that, given the scale of the game-with the biweekly turns- functioning, map-depicted rail lines seem appropriate.

Actually- and this is just an impression based on screenshots- the whole project seems a bit under-detailed.

There are no paratroopers

The game's great strength is that it is simple. During the invasion of France the Germans can play a turn in 15 mins. The Normandy invasion takes the allied player about 15 mins.

Each turn represents about 2 weeks. The shortest scenario is 1944 and lasts one year or about 26 turns. The longest scenario lasts almost 6 years or about 150 turns.

I have played the TcpIP with 5 min/turn, 3 min/turn and even 2 min/turn. For experts with fast computers, 2 minutes per turn is still a real stretch. For experienced players it should be possible to play the turns in France in less than 5 minutes.

One turn is 20 days so one year is 18 turns per side, but this is moddable in the scripts as with many other aspects of the gameplay :)

I like SC2 myself. This game did perk my interest when talked about in ArmChair General magazine. I would love to see an AAR of it being played to see if it offers enough of a difference versus SC2 to purchase.

Yes, you choose what to produce. Population is handled in a fairly innovative way - as your manpower gets lower, the quality of units produced from the remaining manpower decreases as well.
