Turn 15:

The new owners of Wintersgate Farm easily drive away the routed Engineer unit while causing many casualties.
However, III and IV platoon of the 1st Company run into another Carrier Rifle Section half a click south of the farm, and is forced to engage.

III and IV platoon of the 3rd Company are closing in for a rendevous with the advancing units from 1st Company. Another 40mm AA gun blocks their advance and is destroyed.
I and II platoons of the 3rd Company, along with the attached HMG platoon, will now race towards the Hawkinge Aerodrome airstrip objective. Time is starting to become a concern....

I and III platoon from the 2nd Company approach the village of Newington.

Turn 16:

A bad turn all around...

British artillery, which has been sporadic and inaccurate at best, finally found the mark and disables 1SP from the HMG platoon attached to 1st Company.
Furthermore, advancing elements of 1st Company are approached by two full-strength British Rifle Platoons. Both are scared off with a SP loss each, but there presence means delaying the rendevous with the two platoons from 3rd Company. The two para platoons from 3rd Company will probably have to capture the key hangar facilities at Hawkinge Aerodrome alone.

The rest of 3rd Company approaches the airstrip at Hawkinge.

Total disaster for the two platoons from 2nd Company attempting to capture the village of Newington.
British op fire was deadly accurate....each attacking para platoon suffers a SP loss. I Platoon loses morale and becomes disrupted, while III platoon loses morale and retreats!
The rest of 2nd Company (HMG, Engineer, II platoon), which have been stalking British troops in the Ashley Woods near Beachborough, are ordered to disengage and assist their comrades.

Turn 17

The British forces seem to be on full-alert as swarms of rifle troops approach 1st Company positions near Wintersgate Farm from all angles. Most are driven off, but 1st Company must now adopt a wholly defensive posture.

While 1st Company keeps the British occupied, 3rd Company stealthily approaches their objectives at Hawkinge Aerodrome. The two para platoons assigned to capture the hangar facilities occupy a fortified position next to their objective that was foolishly abandoned by the British. The rest of the company is approximately half a kilometer from the airstrip.

The retreating I Platoon, 2nd Company paratroops from the failed assault on Newington suffer another 2SP loss from the spirited British defense. All 2nd Company units will converge for another attack on the village in several turns.

Turn 18

1st Company's defensive perimeter around Wintersgate Farm suffers a setback as III Platoon comes under enemy fire and loses 1SP and becomes disrupted. The attackers then assault, and evict III platoon from its position.

In 3rd Company's sector, the hangar facility at Hawkinge Aerodrome was captured, having only been defended by a mortar section.
The rest of the company will approach the airstrip objective next turn.

Turn 19

III Platoon, 1st Company suffers another SP loss from an arty shell. However the defense around the farm tightens and all British troops are repelled from the area.

I and II Platoon from 3rd Company approach the airfield and come under fire from a 40mm AA gun. The defensive op fire is accurate and each platoon suffers a SP loss. The lone gun is destroyed by return fire.

The second assault of Newington by 2nd Company has been cancelled as losses to the Battalion are becoming a concern.

Turn 20

1st Company continues to repel marauding British troops around their positions.

A British Rifle Platoon advances and occupies the empty airstrip objective. Op fire from 3rd Company's HMG fails to find its mark. However, return fire from the British is extremely deadly and destroys 3SPs of the HMG unit.

I and II Platoon exact revenge, and disrupt and assault the British unit. The airstrip is captured!

Conclusion:

Final Score: 406 - Minor Victory

Tough scenario, and I doubt they get easier! My losses were acceptable until the last 3-4 turns when die rolls started falling heavily in favor of the British.

German losses (SPs):

9 Parachute Infantry Platoon
4 Machinegun Platoon

British losses (SPs):

9 Carriers
4 OML 3-inch Mortars
4 OQF 40mm Anti-Aircraft Guns
8 Carrier Rifle Section
14 Rifle Platoon
6 Engineer Platoon
10 Home Guard Platoon
2 Anti-Aircraft Machinegun Platoon

Received 7 replacement points. HMGs brought up to full strength, paratrooper platoon minimum strength is 5 SPs.

Total Battalion strength is 93% of TOE.

Onward soldiers!

Excellent job at capturing the airfield!

You are correct in stating that they don't get easier. As you progress, they will become more and more difficult.

The fact you captured the airfield provided with you with the abundance of reinforcements for your battalion. I wouldn't be counting on such high reinforcements later in the campaign.

Hope you're enjoying it!

guys, thanks for the feedback.

Looking back, I can see where I made some silly mistakes.

See the assault on Wintersgate Farm for how to take an objective hex.
See the assault on Newington for how NOT to take an objective hex.

Perhaps I was enboldened by the relatively light losses I had taken until that failed attack.
I should've kept 2nd Company together....

Jason, I will admit I'm not a big fan of hypothetical stuff, however it is easily evident even from this first scenario how much work you've put into the maps and oobs...

I've taken a peek at the second scenario...looks like it'll be a lot of fun!

STAY TUNED!

Excellent, I look forward to the continued reading!

Be thankful you took the airfield, had you not succeeded, your second scenario would be trying to capture it again without receiving reinforcements. Not fun.

That's the great thing about AAR's you see/read what things worked out and what things went wrong.

Just lost a big amount of armour being to cocky thinking I'd finished off the enemy.
Was really angry with myself- till my pc crashed. Restarting I found the pc hadn't saved that turn. Know where ATR are. Would this be counted as cheating??

Juggalo looking forward to your next round. Too bad I'm off on holiday on Sunday 2 weeks of sunshine and no CS anywhere.
Keep up the great AAR was a nice piece of reading.

Scenario 2 - July 14, 1940

Post by TAIL GUNNER »

Major Gause's paratroop battalion is ordered to immediatley head southwest from Hawkinge Aerodrome and secure a beachhead for Wehrmacht troops and tanks which are soon to arrive by boat.

A key objective which must be taken as soon as possible is a look-out point next to Cold Harbor which offers full LOS to the beachhead and reportedly houses coastal defenses guns.

1st and 3rd Company are tasked with the taking out the look-out position, as 2nd Company clears the coastline.

Each Company has an HMG platoon attached, and the Engineer platoon and 81mm Mortar Section are assigned to 2nd Company.

Assisting us are several batteries of 75mm Mountain Guns recently flown into Hawkinge, and a Motorcycle Rifle Platoon which will assist the 1st and 3rd Companys.

We can also expect a small amount of air support. Hopefully the Luftwaffe has already taken care of British air interdiction.

The Plan: (Phase 1)

Turn 1:

The Companys form up and move out.

Captain Sieglin and two para platoons from 3rd Company stumble into their own defensive minefield, but are luckily able to avoid damage.

Turn 2:

The para companies continue their advance towards their objectives without loss.

Several enemy Rifle units are observed moving west from the Shornecliffe Garrison Camp area.

Also an enemy HMG platoon reveals itself SE of the village of Shornecliff Camps by firing from long range on lead units of 1st Company.

What an excellent AAR... well written, exciting, realistic and good snap shots. Like reading a short novel on WWII firefights...

Thanks for the nice comments Eagle Strike (and also to british exil)....much appreciated.

I think the LCG aspect of the CS games truly highlights what wonderful games these are. Hopefully this AAR will help convert a few of those undecided folk which are still contemplating whether to buy this game or not.

Turn 3:

The enemy HMG platoon has now become more than a nuisance after it takes more long-range pot shots at the advancing German troops and kills a SP from the Motorcycle Infantry Platoon.

Meanwhile, on the choppy seas, nervous Wehrmacht troops catch their first glimpse of the beachhead assigned to this sector. It is reported to be clear of enemy troops....for now.

Turn 4:

1st Company is now roughly 1.5km from the look-out point objective, and closing in.
3rd Company trails about 1km behind.

2nd Company approaches the ruined remains of the Shornecliffe Garrison Camp.

The approaching Army barges become hopelessly entangled and dangerously bunched-up as they traverse the sea-borne minefields and attempt to stay out of LOS of the look-out point.
If all goes well, landings should begin commencing next turn.
