September status

I am amazed that OE is still in the game. After turn one they were down to a meager 8 in morale having suffered around 130 casualties in one turn [X(]

On the other hand i think that France is going to fall next summer at the latest. The question is what the butchers bill will be to German troops.

I expect the British to intervene in Serbia/Italy making life difficult on AH. I will begin to shift German veterans to the Balkans to blitz the Serbs in spring.

Anyway CP is marching towards Minsk. Now Russian reserves will begin to stockpile in the rear area but it will take time to get all his troops into position so i think i will be able to muster a decent defensive line before Russia can counterattack. I predict a trench line just west of Minsk going North by Northeast.

In the south i am a couple of hexes of Kiev. The south will be
Cavalry country and a site show.

I will have a good staging position on Russia. I need to get them below 20 in morale for a revolution to (maybe) take place. One exhaustion level and i need 60. Counting city morale from Riga hex row and west to it i get 65. Add to this food shortages and morale loss on French surrender and my strategy is clear. Build up for get those 5 hexes further eastwards in the north and then take the defensive.

Oh i forgot to mention but it may be unnecessary to mention that my blind pilots of course didn't give me any air support while the few French pilots naturally did get air support [:@]

Ah well that guy was left alone while his buddies went visiting some French just south of Epinal [;)]

Besides at that time CP had lost around 800.000 men while the Entente had lost 1.200.000. Turkish losses was about 33 % of total CP losses and the far majority of the entente losses was suffered by France. You do the math [:'(]

But you are right of course. If France is to stand a chance they have to counterattacking. Who want's to be a whipping boy anyway ? Wait - i really don't wan't any response on that [:D]

But in order to be able to counterattack France needs a reserve which means fever units in the front which means they have to retreat before getting beaten. On the other hand you just can't give up too much territory to early.

It has many resemblances with a typical Barbarossa campaign.

You need to leave enough front line forces to apply smackdown to the enemy though.  If you leave one corps the Germans will massacre it and suffer no loss to their own readiness or strength.

There is presumably a happy medium where the Germans will win, push the French back, but suffer significant enough loss that a reserve can then hammer the Germans and hopefully annihilate them, or at least cause a net casualty score in favour of the Entente and give the enemy advance pause.

I think thats extremely difficult to achieve in this game, though!

The BEF would be an obvious choice for the reserve at least.

A fully stacked BEF counterattacking will be a great nuisance for Germany in 1914.

But in this game the British were busy killing turks while i killed the French.

Great trade off in my opinion [;)]

Back to business.

The November turn was a turn of consolidation and refitting

An attack on Paris with poison gas was repulsed but Paris was completely surrounded with only 1 corps left in it. Orleans, Arras and Rouen falls in the north.

Finally the Ottomans have had enough of their misery and throws the towel into the ring.

America very much appreciates overtures by the Entente - annoying.

Here is the situation in France by January 1915. Two of the three units in Paris are artillery units. More Germans were being shifted to Serbia and to the Alps together with AH units in order to dig in.

Hmm again America very much appreciates overtures by the Entente.

The German ambassador in the States have been instantly drafted !

Unfortunately we had to abandon a very interesting game at this point due to my opponent being unable to carry out amphibious orders which only was carried out with success at turn one. He was somewhat annoyed by having his Brits stuck in the middle east but hey then he shouldn't have put them there in the first place.

We are going to report this as a bug with the new patch.

The game would have been wide open. On the top side France would be gone soon and Serbia was ready to be steamrolled. With at great position in Russia i think CP had good chances of taking out Russia.

On the down side OE was out so production was hurt. Losses was not too serious and could be replaced but it was quite serious how many offensive points that drive by the Austrians from Galicia to Minsk cost me. Germany and AH starts with 41 offensive points and i was down to 5 ouch.

So i could not have staged a major offensive until late 1915 maybe summer 1916 by which time the Entente could be dug in with elite troops at entrenchment level 4.

Who knows.

But some lessons.

1) Fine to target OE early but be careful to not throwing France or Russia away in the process. What really matters in OE are their resources so why not suffice to take them away after a couple of turns ? Anyway the game situation clearly showed that war is not decided in OE.

2) Russia should be careful to not taking AH seriously at setup.
At least some delaying forces must be deployed.

3) Avoid violating Belgian neutrality is all fine but if France deploys defensively to the extreme and trades territory for time you could be in trouble right from the beginning with Germany.

So you were my nasty opponent!!!

I wish I’d seen this thread sooner: Would have represented a nice intelligence coup.

Yes I really enjoyed this game and regret we will not be finishing it. Technically you did win a minor victory at 6 points although having ones navy movement fail half the time is a bit of a handicap. I agree that the game was wide open although you definitely did have a slight edge

A few observations: The central power player needs to consistently spend diplomacy on the United States: at this rate the Americans were set to enter the war in 1915.

Some sort of house rule against the Allies declaring war on the Ottomans should be considered. With the Ottomans in the war the British are allowed to sail troops freely. I overcommited against them but it is fairly cost-free to commit a couple of French HQ’s to the Middle East as they makes little difference to the defence of France and they and 2 British corps have an Excellent chance of knocking the Ottomans out of the war in 1914 if the allies move fast.

Well next turn France would have surrendered so talk about technicality [:-]

Getting consistently a "America very much appreciates overtures by the Entente" three times in a row certainly had something to do with this.

Hey, against the evil genius mastermind I’ll take what I can get. I won a minor victory: That’s my story and I’m sticking to it

No you clearly played a better game and were way ahead on points although I was really looking forward the The US-British intervention on the Eastern Front in late 1915. Committing the US cavalry to the East front in 1915: that’s got to be a record. I thought you had declared unrestricted Submarine warfare to piss them that much off but I guess it was just dumb luck.

The point remain that if you play against the AI and consistently spend diplomacy on the US they will enter the war in 1915 and that tells me the Central powers need to counterspend: Perhaps the US is just especially receptive to Entente diplomacy?

Don't think so, I played as the CPs and kept spending diplomatic actions on the US, and they didnt enter the war until 1918.

I meant that if you play as the entante against the AI and spend a political point every turn they will generally enter the war in 1915.

I expect a patten will develop whereby both sides consistently spend diplomacy points on the US every turn

If France falls it doesn't really matter if the US is involved, IMO.

Even 1916 will do.

It will take time for that at start toothpick production America has to build their Behemoth Corps and get them deployed in force.
