Mission over Liuchow was uneventful. Bomber went in to light flak. There were no planes on the ground and none in the air. Apon our return to base I near crashed my plane as I came in for a landing. Standing there without a care in the world was Major Degawa. Everyone rushed to find out how this could be. I said to him, "I say you go in, I say your plane crash in flames and yet here you stand." He then told us of how he had jumped from the plane when he knew he could not pull it from it's dive. His shute did not open and he land with an unceramonious thud in a pile of manure. We all laughed at that. " Well how did you get back here? After all you were kilometers inside enemy territory." He said he walked south for days until he was picked up by a patrol out of Amoy. Major Degawa has to be the luckiest man I know. No wonder we did not get a replacement for Major Koga. Intelligence reports say that the Flying Tigers are no longer in Southeast China and may have returned to Burma. The navy has assigned a wing of Zen fighters to do sweeps over all the airfields to see if this is true. We are stood down for tomorrow. A thing as we have to celebrate the return of Major Degawa.

Well it's back to the bombing missions again. Major Degawa made an organization shake up. I am no longer the training officer, that duty has been taken over by a lowly 2nd Lt. Kaizuchi. Good luck to him, never liked that duty anyways. We have harrassed the 208th Chinese Division for the last two days. My section is doing well and maintenance of the aircraft is also good. My brother Fuso had been assigned as training officer to the 207th training Sentai. A high honour for one so young. I must ask my father why I was named after a city in Russia and Fuso was named after a battleship? Still no word from father on the conduct of the war. I must write to my brother to congratulate him on his new assignment. Rumour has it that the army in Malaya is at the gates of Singapore. We still haven't taken Manila though. Have I mentioned how much I hate bombing missions.

Major Degawa grounded me for the last three missions. As the best pilot he said he doesn't want to lose me on a cake run. Got a letter from my father yesterday and the news is grim. The fifteenth army is still at the gates of Singapore and has not crossed over to the island. The sixteenth army is still fighting in the streets of Manila. The Shuzen brigade was pushed out of the Bagio area north of Clark field and the rest of fourteenth army is fighting at Lingeyen. Darwin in northern Austrialia was raided by carrier planes yesterday. The twenty fifth army is still moving towards Rangoon. We have made lands at Merak and Palembang as well as Sabang. Timor Island is in our hands. China is China. Seeing as I am not flying I will ask the Major if I can return to Japan to see my mother.

I have just returned from my leave in Nagoya. My mother is doing well, father is as he always is. Continuity is important in life, just knowing that my family is as i had left them is comforting. Apon my return there was happy news. Singapore that bastion of English might has fallen. Another fifty thousand soldiers go into captivity. In all the time I was away the chutai flew bombing missions against targets in and around Changsha. So I guess I didn't miss much. Wonder if I will be rusty, well I will find out tomorrow.
