Here is Java.

Today my naval patrol units discovered an enemy task force hovering just west of Batavia. The report I get is 8 ships containing at least one CA. I suspect this might be Force Z. It is a good place for Force Z to sit and wait in relative safety from Japanese airpower, while still being able to mount a counterattack at a landing at Merak or Batavia.

This causes some concern. More on that in the next post.

Here is the situation in Malaya.

Now, the reason for my concern.

At Kuantan, my recon have spotted over 20 000 troops. This is very unusual in my experience. These guys should not be here. At least not if he is trying to do a Sir Robin. Is he going to make a stand here?

At the same time my recon have not spotted any troops in the southernmost bases in Malaya. Could it mean that he is defending north of Singapore?

At the same time Ive spotted what I think is Force Z hovering off Java within striking distance of Batavia. This makes me reluctant to land directly into Batavia.

So, here is what Im considering.

Maybe I should divert the two brigades heading to Batavia, and send them to Palembang instead. If I land at Palembang instead I avoid the risk of running into Force Z, and I get a base further west where I can deny the RN the ability to use the sea-area west of Java. In short, I can remove the threat of a RN ambush. Such a move would also free the 18th division, and I could use this division to land at Johore Bharu instead. That way I could capture a large part of the British Malaya-forces in case he is trying to defend up north.

Ive got 21st division heading to Songkhia, they will arrive in two or three days. I could also divert the 21st to Johore Bharu if I wanted to.

Ive got 5 BBs in the area that could bombard Johore Bharu, so even if there is a brigade there, I could probably take the base.

Here is an interesting development in China. He is mounting a counterattack towards Canton. Undoubtedly he is trying to capture the city while Im busy at Hong Kong.

Ive re-routed the 56th Division to land behind his back here. With some luck, I'll be able to surround his forces at Canton. If I manage this, I will have opened up all of southern China.

Nice trick. Are you going to land 56th Div in non-base hex? ... not everyone tolerates non-base invasions...

Shit you are right. I forgot we had that houserule. Good thing you said that.

So, I'll have to invade in Pakhoi instead, and rely more on paras to cut him off initially.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/13/41

Southern Pacific

The South Seas Detachment arrives at Rabaul, and makes short work of the allied defenders. A very nice surprise. The South Seas Detachment will now rest for a couple of days and then move on to Port Moresby. Depending on the resistance there, I might be able to use the two divisions currently in transit from Japan to Truk in other areas, New Zealand perhaps.

Maybe I should post the houserules.

No more than 6 PTs in a TF, max 12 at "major" ports

Max 6 ship ASW TF

No non base hex landings

No sub scout invasions

Cutting off troops only with "real" combat units

Max 50 planes per af size

No rearming of CA/BB at ports smaller than size 5

Havent had time to write much AAR this weekend.

Here is a summary of what has happened in the past 3 days.

Burma.
He is massing in Rangoon for whatever reason. He is defending behind the river one hex north of Rangoon with 5 units. Im bypassing him with my fast units and will wait for the two divisions to come up north and cross that river.

Malaya.
My invasion of Johore Bharu failed. The 18th division was not up to the task to take the city, and he managed to reinforce it with 4-5 brigades before my attack. Something that made the situation worse was the fact that my entire airforce in Malaya refused to fly, meaning no supply and no para-reinforcements or attacks. Bad. 5th and 21st division are moving down the penninsula, and it seems we will have to take Singapore in the good old fashioned way.

Java.
Two brigades landed at Palembang, the attack will commence tomorrow. He is trying to counterattack at Kragen, but I have over 100 combat factors there now, I doubt he will succeed.

Southern Pacific.
I lost an invasion force heading to Tongapu island. His carriers were in the area. Ive landed on the Noumea-island, at Koumac, and marched to La Foa now. All of Noumea will be in my hands within a couple of days. Rabaul is mine. Im using paras based at Guadalcanal to mop up all the islands.

Central Pacific.
Nothing much to report.

Northern Pacific.
Dutch Harbor has fallen.

Phillipines.
Disaster at Clark, a counterattack threw me back to Lingayen. He is defending outside Manilla with ten divisions or so. Both my drives have stalled, will have to consider reinforcing here.

China.
Ive crossed the river north of Changsa, will consider an encirclement here, he has over 100 000 men in the city. For some reason he has been defending Pakhoi for the past two days, so I wont invade there.
The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.

Yesterdays disaster in the Phillipines opened up my eyes. I have to take this front seriously too, otherwise I'll be stuck here well into 1942. Ive relocated all my Sallys to Apiri, and my Ki-48s are relocating to Lengaspi. I will use these airforces to hit Clark and Manilla daily, to prevent him to build up his forts.

I am still considering to reinforce this theater, but I think not. I'll use 56th Brigade from Mindanao when they have cleared the last enemy pocket there.

Excellent news. He attacked at Kragen, and was defeated in detail. Now his troops are spent, and I'm just going to tie them down with occational attacks to prevent him from using them elsewhere. Hes got practically all his combat troops on Java here at Kragen, meaning that I can bring in the two brigades from Palembang to mop up the island. With this combat, any attempt to defend Java is doomed.

The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.
In its place we are entering a period of consequences..

In the skies above Rangoon...

Post by Hortlund »

Today we saw the first major airbattles of the war. Something odd is going on at Rangoon. All the allied forces in Burma has been converging at Rangoon over the past few days. Instead of attacking head on, Ive bypassed Rangoon, and Im cutting the city off. Two divisions are preparing to move in for the attack, while tank regiments and other units move north. In effect I have surrounded the vast majority of the allied forces in Burma.

In the past two days, Ive spotted several allied transports heading into the port. And the airfields of Rangoon are filled with allied fighters. I suspect he is trying to do a asian Dunkirk.

Ive ordered two Zero Datais to Bangkok with orders to do a fighter sweep over Rangoon, and I have one Nell Datai escorted by one Oscar Datai there aswell.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/21/41
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Rangoon , at 29,34

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 48

Allied aircraft
P-40B Tomahawk x 23
P-40E Warhawk x 28

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 6 destroyed, 8 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-40B Tomahawk: 5 destroyed, 13 damaged
P-40E Warhawk: 6 destroyed, 14 damaged

The initial fighter sweep achieves a 2-1 kill ratio and a 3-1 damage ratio. Not extremely well, but not bad either considering that the AVG is at Rangoon.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day Air attack on TF, near Rangoon at 29,34

Japanese aircraft

Allied aircraft

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M Nell: 1 damaged
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 3 destroyed, 5 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-40B Tomahawk: 5 destroyed, 8 damaged
P-40E Warhawk: 8 destroyed, 6 damaged

Allied Ships
AK Edgar Luckenbach, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
AK Selma City, Torpedo hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x G3M Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet
4 x G3M Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet
4 x G3M Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet

Here is the big surprise of the day. The Oscars were better dogfighters than the Zeros. They achieve a 4-1 kill ratio, and a 3-1 damage ratio. Whats interesting here is that the AVG were turning back after sustaining some losses. They must have a morale problem over there.

The transports hit were empty though. I wonder why.

Japanese aircraft
G3M Nell x 4

Here we have one brigade that is heading from the NEI to the Phillipines. Since the defence at Batavia was lighter than expected, I decided to shift one of the brigades over to the Phillipines instead. Same here. Off Andaman Islands, this time a DD with troops on it? Is he trying to do some sort of local counterattack? I hope so, I just reinforced the base on the northernmost tip of the Palembang-island (forgot its name). So if he thinks he is facing just some paratroopers there, he is wrong, he will be sailing straight into a Naval Guards unit and a Coastal Gun battery.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Port Moresby did not even offer a single day of resistance. With that, the campaign in the Solomons is closed, and now I need to figure out what to do with my forces in the area. Right now I have the 16th Division heading to Noumea and the South Seas Detachment here. Perhaps they will shift to the Kwajelein-area for further offensive operations, or they will stay here and fortify my positions.

Tomorrow I'll try another probing attack at Changsa. I will also try to finally defeat the british at Hong Kong. I have also brought in 2 divisions and one brigade to move by land from Indochina to Nanning in southern China. These units will reach Nanning in a couple of days. This is the reaction to his attack in Canton. Since a HR forbids me to land in non-base hexes. Therefore I am forced to do this rather ankward detour.

I am currently gathering troops and ships for my next big offensive in the central pacific, code name EMPIRE. Forces allocated for this operation are one IJA division, the entire KB, 5 BBs and a handful of CAs and DDs. I should have all the forces in place in two weeks.

He tries to counterattack south of Manilla. 1-1 odds, but he loses 3 times as many troops as I. I can afford it, and Ive got two brigades and one division coming into the area from Burma and the NEI to help mopping up the last resistance here.

Yeah, problem is I cant. He's got 6 Chinese Corps in Canton. Its a good thing too that I only went in with one division, since I would have lost Canton if I had only a brigade there to defend.

To counter that, Ive landed two divisions in Hanoi and Im marching them along the coastline to Nanning. When Nanning falls I'll be able to encircle those 6 Chinese Corps.

Some interesting developments today.

He has pulled back all troops in the PI into Manilla. Im sure he thinks it is a smart way to try to hold out for many months in that city hex. In reality he is playing right into my hands though. Now with the resources at Clark in my hands I can starve him to death, and I can focus more on using artillery to kill him. As a consequence, Ive sent the 200 Sallies from the Phillipines to help out in southern China.

He is attacking in northern China. If I fail to hold him here, I will be pushed further back towards the coastline. I am not too concerned though, since things are going good in the central mainland of China, and Ive got plenty of reinforcements to throw into the fray from other parts of China if things should go bad.
The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.
In its place we are entering a period of consequences..

I always shift the divisions along the Chinese coast to Canton. That places another 2 divisions or so there.

Manila just became a troop training ground. That is what I use it for. I start cycling in my lower experience infantry units and get them to the 80's with safe combat experience before I ship them to the front. A few deliberate attacks boost them nicely.

WHAT AM I DOING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am the allies in our next game.[:@]
