Unfortunately, the bulk of the USAAF attacks the surface TFs rather than the carriers, but still half of KB (3 CVs and 1 CVL are left burning). In my own out of synch replay, all the bombers went after KB and all 6 CVs were left burning with 2 AMMO explosions. As it is, not being able to see Bombur's replay, Im not sure how badly damaged the IJN CVs are but Bombur did make a comment about KB being "finished".

Now the USN transports are subject to the full fury of KB:

As the US invasion forces get pummeled in the Marianas, the world wants to know

"WHERE IS TASK GROUP 58?"

Why, Task Group 58 is located several hundred miles to the NW escorting the invasion forces approaching Luzon. The invasion is temporarily suspended and Task Group 58 is recalled to deal with the Japanese carriers.

PHILIPPINES:

Bombur sends his bombardment TFs to hit Jolo one time too many.....this time Admiral Paliser is waiting for him with BB Revenge and BB Ramilles:

CA Kumano sinks immediately and CA Myoko is a floating hulk after getting holed several times by 15" projectiles. Nevertheless, her cloaking gear remains intact and she slowly steams away under the nose of 100+ Allied naval bombers.

Dutch PT boats take on the remnants of the IJN bombardment TF:

There was no bombardment of Jolo tonight.

Bombur just made operational a level 4 airifield at Legaspi but I waited one day too long to close it as I wanted to fly recon first. Bombur makes the RN CVs pay for it with his Bettys/Nells :

Day Air attack on TF at 41,52

G4M1 Betty: 1 destroyed

Allied Ships

CLAA Capetown

Day Air attack on TF at 41,52

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 18
G3M Nell x 6
G4M1 Betty x 7

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 11 damaged
G3M Nell: 6 damaged
G4M1 Betty: 7 damaged

Allied Ships
BC Repulse, Torpedo hits 2, on fire
CL Glasgow
CV Illustrious, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
CA Devonshire

Evidently, when I tried to clear the CV fighters previous escort orders by putting them all on 100% training I accidentally left them on training missions so there was NO CAP. BC Repulse and CV Illustriuos are ok, but CV Formidable will be out of the war for awhile.

The newly opened Japanese airfield at Legaspi will be closed tomorrow one day too late, but at least the RN completed its mission to escort the reinforcements to Luzon.

Post by Bombur »

...and now it´s up to me to tell you how the game ended. Just one correction. I didn´t send the KB to hit enemy transports. The idea was to send it to Iwo Jima for an emergency refuel, and then to Tokyo, where it was scheduled to escort a large convoy to Palau. Unfortunately, I didn´t notice that the path to Iwo isn´t a straight line and put the KB just in range of enemy bombers, which I fear like hell (NM 9.x, IMO, makes LB too powerful, this is also valid for Japanese G3M´s and G4M´s in naval missions). The result was what you see. Hordes of enemy medium bombers attacked my ships, placing out of action 2 (or three) CV´s and one CVL. Zeroes fought well, shooting down more than 60 planes. Withouth fuel in Palau, I had no alternative but to follow the path to Iwo Jima (and to my final defeat). I still had 500 planes on my carriers, but only 170 bombers (of 300) were able to attack. They sunk Lexignton and placed 4 torpedos in one BB, but all of them were crippled by the end of the battle. Very few planes were lost, many of tem diverted to Iwo Jima, where my CV´s finally arrived. I was, maybe, in position to launch 20 fighters and 80 bombers against the enemy CV´s (house rules limited AC operations from Iwo to 100 planes), and, maybe, sink another CV, but it would be likely that all 9 CV´s would have been sunk in the follwoing day. So I surrendered, as the outcome of the game was already decided. It´s clear that it was my worst WiTP game. I was doomed anyway, but the victory in mid 42 was a great achievement from Spruance. He could have waited my offensive to stop and come to my Islands in 1943, with a minimum risk. By sending his fleet in 06/42 he abbreviated the game, but also took some risk. If I had kept my Carriers in Truk I would have been able to engage him in better terms. He still could have won, of course. But I had a chance. With my assets dispersed and few fuel at both Truk and Palau, the game was pretty over. One reason I advanced so slowly is that I feared the strategic LB. In this mod, air defenses are (or at least seem to me) weaker, so I tried to take strategic resources only when I could defend them. This was obviously a great mistake. I asdo lost almost two months to take Palembang because I avoided a direct disembark, choosing instead a disembark in the north follwed by a land advance. As for NM playtesting, I would say that my incompetence prevented us from taking definitive conclusions. Hopefully I´ve learned something from this defeat.

Interesting replay. My WPO scenario is headed in the same direction. We're playing combomod (RHS 7), and almost everything is stalled in mid-February. (I'm playing the Japanese.) The entirety of the Malaya invasion force is on Singapore Island, attacking at 1-5 against the level 5 Singapore forts. Most of the Luzon invasion force is at Lingayen, attacking half the Luzon defense force at 1-2. There's a division holding a small perimeter at Manila, surrounded by the other half of the Luzon defence force--the game engine doesn't allow you to withdraw from contact if your opponent harasses you with light mortar fire every day. I hold an airbase north of Palembang with paratroopers. Only in Burma am I still advancing.

My suggestion: Keep the KB and the main surface units in position to counter an eventual move on Marianas, Wake or Gilbert/Marshalls. Sending the KB to Brunei (and taking Brunei so late) was my undoing. If engaging the enemy with KB is necessary, then send your BB´s to take some bombs. Good luck!

CARRIER BATTLE IN THE MARIANAS

Post by racndoc »

SITUATION REPORT: JUNE 27th& 28th, 1942

CENTPAC:

Bombur and I finally had our CV vs CV battle in to determine naval supremacy in the central Pacific. For WAR PLAN ORANGE I had massed my BBs for the decisive engagement but with the realities of 1940's carrier capabilities the BBs were reduced to absorbing enemy airstrikes.

As they say on Wall Street, here is the Tale of the Tape:

The Allies lose CV Lexington but all Japanese carriers: 6 CVs, 2 CVLs and a CVE are incapable of conducting flight ops and all remaining Japanese CV AC land on Iwo Jima.

The Allies can now reinforce Luzon at will. Japan sues for peace.

BTW, I said I was going to put Legaspi out of business this turn and that was certainly accomplished:
