RE: ny59giants (a) vs john 3rd (j) - the learning continues...for me
A New Year begins game wise. Thus, a new way to do my AAR. [:D]
First area, the North Pacific (NP).
This area I neglected from the beginning and am now watching numerous empty bases at the western end fall. [:(]
Attu Island fell to 1 x SNLF, 1 x Aviation, 2 x Construction on 12/27. Amchitka Island fell to 1 x SNLF, 1 x Construction on 12/30. Kiska fell to 1 x Construction on 12/31.
My response has been to have 6 AK's that were near finishing unloading supplies at Archorage to proceed to Kodiak to transport the 37 RCT to Umnak Island. BB Oklahoma along with 2 DD's are near by to provide cover for the landing. Sara and her escorts (3CA, 1CL, 9DD) just left Pearl and are heading north at full speed as I cannot afford to have Umnak and/or Dutch Harbor fall. [:-] 2 S-class subs were on route after the intial invasion was detected have been diverted to Umank and Dutch, just in case.
On the West Coast (WC), the 4 RCAF BF & 5 RCAF BF (100 aviation support each), an EAB, and 55 FG (60 P-40C) are headed to Umnak instead of going to NE Australia. Since the Alied BF's lack infantry at this point, he could take everything to and including Cold Bay with just a NLF. [X(][X(]

Next area is the Central Pacific (CP). This is currently (and hopefully that way for a good part of January [;)]) the quietest. John only took Tarawa, to date.
I have a TF carrying the 27 Division (which comes in Big B's mod with a full TO& E [:D] as a reinforcement), 110 BF, 65 AA, 78AA, 18 Engineer Rgt, 56 CD, VMF-221 (24 F2A Buffalo), and 41 BG (34 B18A Bolo) heading for Canton Island via Christmas Island (currently 24 hexes NE of Christmas moving at full speed). They will be escorted the final part (just in case there is something that appears out of the blue) by Yorktown and her escorts (3 CA, 1CL, 9 DD's). Don't want any long range LB's interferring with the unloading process.
Canton is to be one of my strong points that I intend to build up to the max quickly. John has placed subs in major ports, but my PBY stationed there has not detected any. I have 2 ASW TF at Palmyra which will go ahead, just in case. [;)]

Hi Michael,
How's your vacation going? Catching up on your AAR I C... <laughter> With all of the time off you have we can expect lots of glorious pictures - right? <more laughter>
When you get a few can you show me what's going on in the DEI? I always like to watch that area of the map during the early start of the war.
TTFN,
Mike

RE: ny59giants (a) vs john 3rd (j) - the learning continues...for me
I'm working my way over. [;)] I have to get my assessments in for the last few day (hopefully done tomorrow as they have to share time with my PBEM's [:D]).
The biggest issue so far was John made it very costly to pull out any oil and I got very little fuel out of the SRA. He placed 1 or 2 subs in most ports that I need to get AK/TK in and out of. Plus, in this mod, Nell/Betty have a torpedo range of 15 and extended range of 20. Thus, they were able to hit Balikpapan from Saigon. [X(][X(]
I forgot to send the few TK's from the WC on full speed to get the fuel to the SP/Nz/Oz. Thus, I am running on fumes all over that area. I just docked 2 CV TF at Aukland and have to wait 2 more days until a 12k TK with fuel gets there to fill both of them up. On 1/13/42, the mege-reinforcements hit San Fran and Aden. I have to survive until early 2/42 and then I will be overflowing with fuel/supplies. There is so much Oil in the USA that I will be able to max out the Australian economy in a few months

RE: ny59giants (a) vs john 3rd (j) - the learning continues...for me
Next area, the South Pacific (SP) which will include the Solomons and southern area of New Guinea. John was very methodical (which seems to be trademark of his play) in his conquest of this area. [&o][&o]
He just captured Lunga on 1/3/42 with 1 x naval guard, 1 x BF.
He took Luganville on 12/31/41 with 1 x naval guard, 1 x avaiation unit, 1 x engineer. The AF is size 1 and I expect him to build it up quickly. I believe (no intel) that he probably has Zeros, Emily/Marvis, and Nell/Betty already stationed there. As soon as it gets to level 2, the LB's will be out hunting the shipping lanes. I have already routed shipping farther south to avoid their reach and/or put them near the max range.
I just had 1 Marine Division and a CD loaded on my fastest AP's to head for Suva and they are barely out of San Fran. I will use my 2 CV TF (each with 1CV, 3CA, 1CL, 9DD) that is currently at Aukland to escort them in once they get close. I am planning to use one of my aviation regiments (270 aviation support) that I get on the 13th to fortify the area. Right now, at Suva I have only patrol and LB (no fighters). [:(] I have RCT's at Panama prepping for Savaii and Wallis Island. If I can last another 4 to 6 weeks, I should be able to prevent further expansion towards Pago Pago and will use my CV's judically.
My hold on New Guinea is nearing it's end. [:(] I have seen a couple of BB TF's hit Port Moresby already. Once he had 2 or more CV/CVL/CVE cover it just in case I had CV's to intervene. I had a squadron each of Wirraway and Catalina I's there, but repeated sweeps by Zero's from Lae has me pull them back to the mainland. No sense in giving him cheap target practice. My only hope is for the LCU's at PM to eventually retreat into the mountains and I will be able to use my large fleet subs to evac them to the mainland for rebuilding.
I am not going to attempt to hold New Caledonia. I cannot be strong enough there to prevent a landing at one of 3 bases/dot hex. Plus, i read in another AAR, that it would probably offer John a possibility of destroying LCU's for little in return.
I just need to be patient and build up slowly. [:D]

Why put the Marines at Suva? Won't he just land at Nandi, march one hex, and wipe them out? (This is the same problem with fortifying Noumea). Why not put 2nd Marines on an atoll or other heavily guarded hex?

Good points Dan.
John had Akagi sunk on day 2 and Kaga was heavily damaged (it hasn't shown up on the sunk list, so I think it survived). So he has 4 CV's for KB and mini-KB against my 4 CV's with Hornet arriving at the end of this month. I get the Americal Division at the end of the month along with another RCT (planning on sending both there). Thus, I will have 2 divisions and 2 RCT/Bde plus support units and a strong air presences. I get 3 avaition rgt (270 aviation support) and 3 BF (90 aviation support) on the 12th.
He would need to use KB and/or mini-KB to have a chance as he would be outside of Zero range. Since he split up KB to attack Pearl, he did little damage to my old BB's (Tenn 72 sys, Ariz 53 sys) still at Pearl; WVa (35), MD (31), Cal (17), Penn (17) are all at Seattle, and NV (5) at San Fran. Oklahoma is up in Alaska. I get 2 more BB's at Panama this month.
I have kept track of his large free LCU's and know where almost all are except: 21 div, 31 div, and 56 div. He conducted a swift and well run conquest of the southern SRA and I have a strong hunch that he is going for northern Australia. He has prevented my from reinforcing it or even bring in supplies without paying a high bill. Which I cannot afford at this time. [8|]
We both get the 100 political points per day, which I think will help the Allies out in the short term more than the Japanese. I can change the command of a RCT in Panama in 8 days. [:D] I have routed 2 transport TF coming back from Oz/Nz to pick up at least one of them and probably some LBA. [;)]
I know it may be a gamble, but in my younger days, I was pretty good at playing chess (especially the Black player). I'll take some chances.

1 Jan 42 to 5 Jan 42
North Pacific: Nothing going on here. [>:][>:]
Central Pacific: Nothing going on here. [>:][>:]
South Pacific: a BB TF hits Port Moresby...again. Milne Bay (Gili Gili) and Shortland are captured each by 1 x NLF. A small force of 1 x Bf and 1 x Naval Guard capture Lunga. 9 ships speed 16 moving SE are sighted 540 miles due west of Suva!![ [X(][X(]
Australia: Nothing going on here. [>:][>:] I am scrapping together fuel from smaller ports to move to Brisbane and over to Aukland.
SRA: Samaranda (Borneo) falls to the 1st & 2nd Para Rgt and 1 x Aviation Rgt. Immediately, he moves in Zeros and Lillys to start bombing Balikpapan. Teloekbetoeng (Sumatra) falls to the 23rd Mix Bde coming from Palembang. Miri is captured. The 56th Bde, 8Tank Rgt, and 2 x BF capture Koepang (Timor) and there are multiple TF anchored in the port going.....where??
PI & Malaya: Lingayan and Clark Fields fall and bombing of forces from Legaspi, Jolo Island, and Aparri continues. I pulled my forces back to Manila (AV 1840, Supply 51k, forts 3, urban hex). However, I left supply (14k at Clark and 27k is cut off at Bataan with 2 static CD units). I was hoping....and praying that some of it would come into Manila. Can someone explain what I could have done to get some of it to follow??[&:][&:] The seige of Johore Bahru continues. His 4 divisions are defeated in one attack and am told in a email that he is waiting for 2 Tank Rgt to arrive. Meanwhile, Oscars, Sallys, Lilly, and Sonia's continue to bomb the troops.
Burma/India: The 33rd division continues to march up to Moulmein, His LBA from Rahaeng continues to bomb here at occasionally at Ragoon. My LBA from Malaya is back in India recovering. I found out in Big B's mod that there are 2 early versions of Hurricanes available. Hurricane IIb are here now and Hurricane IIc in 8/42. The RAAF Buffalo where able to upgrade to the IIb in CHS. However, in this mod it by-passes this option and goes to the IIc. [:(]
China: The attack on my Guerilla LCU's continue with training by his LBA from Canton. I am trying to withdraw back into the interior from the coast and we have an ongoing battle at Pucheng.
Nothing going on that surprises me except the TF that is now near Suva. What is it and what are it's intentions??

It is just about possible, but only by giving up the rest of Luzon pretty much straight away, and only if the Japanese player doesn't realise what you are doing. To get all the supply back to Manila you start moving all the units there straight away. Also generate some 1 ship AK task forces at Manila. Start loading supplies on these and they will effectively suck supply from the rest of the island (because Manila supply level will be less than 2x the requirement of all units stationed there. That 2x figure drives pretty much everything supply-wise). Once the units are back to Manila unload the AK's and the supply will not move. Bingo beer and skittles for everyone for months. Obviously if your opponent works out what you are doing he will A) advance quicker catching some of your supples before they have been sucked back to Manila, and/or B) base some single engine bombers close to Manila sinking the transports.

RE: ny59giants (a) vs john 3rd (j) - the learning continues...for me
6 Jan 42 to 9 Jan 42
North Pacific: I have a RCT almost completely unloaded at Umnak Island with a RCAF BF beginning to unload. Another RCAF BF is leaving Umnak for Cold Bay. I will have a USA BF heading for Umnak from San Fran in a few days after my mega-reinforcements arrive on the 13th. [:)] This will give me about 125 aviation support at 2 bases.
Central Pacific: My reinforcement TF heading for Canton (27th division, 2 x AA, 1 x BF, and some LBA) is 15 hexes away. I have the Yorktown meeting escorts from Pearl NE of Christmas Island. They are refueling from AK/AP coming from Oz./Nz that are heading for WC. This TF will cover the landings. Sara will arrive at Pearl next turn to refuel and will follow (I had sent it north after the quick invasions as I organized a hasty defense of the Aleutians).
South Pacific: This is where most of the action is heating up and I need HELP !! Or at least solid advise from those who have more experience than me. [;)] Efate is captured by 2 x Para SNLF. One of the two TF west of Suva is found out to be made up of 2 CVE (Hosho & Taiyo) as my Hudsons attempt to bomb them. I lose track of them from one day and I send my 2 CV TF out of Aukland still without full fuel loads (I forgot to set my initial TK from the WC to full speed to get the fuel over here [:@]). They are currenly heading east to Rarotonga (Cook Islands) where 5 AO are waiting. Most of the deep South Pacific is covered by thunderstorms and I was afraid of him sending the 2 CVE's on a raid. On the 9th, my lone LBA of Hudsons from Suva attack the two TF seen in the screen shot. I found out the other TF is made up from Jap CV division 4 (Shokaku & Zuikaku) by the ID of the CAP. [;)] They seem to be just sitting out there. WHY?? Are they preventing an attack against Luganville and/or Efate?? Or are they there to prevent me from reinforcing Suva??
My current thinking is this. I have a Marine Division and a CD on AP's coming through the Line Islands and after the landings at Canton are complete, use all 4 of my CV to protect this TF and land at Suva. He has Jap CV division 2 (Soryu & Hiryu) unaccounted for. I have transports heading for Panama to pick up a RCT and Eng Rgt prepping for Savaii (Samoa Islands). On the 13th, I get my initial mega-reinforcements. [8D]. This will include 4 x aviation regiments (270 aviation support) and 3 BF (90 aviation support). I am thinking about sending 1 aviation rgt and 1 BF to Suva/Nandi plus base a BF each on Savaii and Wallis Island. There are RCT available or only take 8 days to change commands available for deployment. I get the Americal Division by the end of the month that can be sent there. Again, I am willing to use my 4 CV's to protect these deplotment until LBA can take over.
The big question is, "Am I placing too many eggs in this one basket?" Right now I have accounted for all but 2 Jap divisions, but he has had 3000 political points to use to date and could have at least another one available. Is there another way to try to keep this area from falling?? Feedback please. [&o][&o]
Meanwhile, the South Sea Detachment along with 56 Division capture Port Moresby. [:(]
Australia: [>:][>:]
SRA: Landings at Merak (Java) start on the 9th. A couple of AK/AP eat a TT from my Dutch subs. [:D] His LBA continues to hit Balikpapan.
PI/Malaya: LBA attacks continue on Manila, Singapore, and Johore Bahru.
Burma/India: The 33rd division attacks Moulmein and is close to 2:1 odds. the 2 Bde are ordered backover the river as the long term LBA attacks have raise their fatigue and disruption level and don't want them to become combat ineffective.
China: same...same
P.S. The Hornet arrives in 20 days [:D][:D]

RE: ny59giants (a) vs john 3rd (j) - the learning continues...for me
Time is on your side - which means patience is an attribute. You don't want to take on the Japanese yet unless you're absolutely certain you have a marked advantage. No need in giving combat to John on his terms right now. Suva is important, but not critical.

RE: ny59giants (a) vs john 3rd (j) - the learning continues...for me
Nice job against the KB. Pillager had all six KB carriers hitting Pearl so a similar move on my part would likely been a disaster. Though I wonder if it wouldn't have been such a bad idea - with my PBEM about to hit 9/42, I have all my CV's and Pillager has all his.
Me thinks I may have been overestimating the KB (or underestimating myself) in my own PBEM. Hard to say. Time will tell.
Question (if you can answer in here, otherwise drop in my string) What was your fighter ratio (CAP to escort)?
TF's with follow orders... In the recent activity near Palmyra, movement of my four carrier TF's were set to follow each other (three of them following the fourth). I picked the slowest TF (max 28 kts) as the "lead" one - all four apparently following each other at cruise speed with no problem. Haven't tried any follow movement with TF's at full speed.
