One legitamate and two vying for the title. It was finally hashed out. Men trying to usurp the title of Pope for their own personal gain was a problem back in the middle centuries.

Its a well known fact that you can never have two many popes....I wonder which one was infallable and I wonder if they ever argued over who was more infallable than the other..

Times seem to permit exagerrated attacks by some who may wish harm to the Church. Sorry, did not mean to single you out. I, for my part have a responsability to limit it, if I can. Somebody (not Catholic) reading here may become confused by your statement.

Not so much the individuals who wanted to be the only pope ( although personal gain was there ) as it was Kings who wanted a pope beholden to them. The three popes at one time did not last long at all, one of them dying. However the period of two popes went on for a long while. If I remember correctly 60 years or so.

A little odd to see a CHRISTMAS thread pop back up in March... [:'(]

The time period was called the Great Schism (sometimes called the Western Schism, Babylonian Captivity or the Avignon Papcy) and lasted from 1378-1417). Briefly there were 3 popes, at the end when it was being ironed out. This is a bit of a misnomer though, because most of Catholic Europe did NOT view both popes or all three popes as legitimate. Thus, it is like saying there are two emperors or kings during a civil war - techincally yes, but half supports one king, the other supports the other. This was one of the great struggles for dominance over religion and is seen as all part of the Hundred Years War era fight between England, France, and the Holy Roman Empire. This is also why there is a papal palace in Avignon, France (very neat place to visit).

For more information, wikipedia isn't too bad here - The Western Schism.

It was one of the Avignon popes, Clement V (before the schism proper), that Philip the Fair "pressured" into trying the Templars on heresy and blasphemy, leading to the order's demise.

Thanks for the information.

And, hey, it's never too early to wish everyone "Happy Holidays" for 2008... why wait till the last minute to get those Christmas greetings out to everyone. [;)]
