Japan player has to stockpile nerves. A lot of nerves.

In case that he done worse or even as it was in RL, he will need nerves for watching his "cuning plans" crashed day by day....

In case that he done better than RL, he must save nerves for being accused for gamey playing, taking advantage of game model, cheating and/or countless fruitless debates with envious lurkers, often camouflaged as "for Gods sake we need historical game!" fanbois.

In any case, you will need a lot of nerves.[:D]

May I ask what's shooting down all the Allied bombers? Is it the Jack because I'm not getting anything like those results when the AI sends out 4 engines against Tojos and Tonys so far. And my fighter squadrons on the frontlines are all 75+ xp. [&:]

Jacks and Tojos are doing most of the killing these days. Until about a month ago, the Tonys were tearing up the sky. Something clicked and now they can't shoot anything down. I don't know what happened but there is a definite difference now. About the same time the Tonys lost their teeth, the P-38s suddenly got very deadly. Until then, they were fodder for everything. Definitely caused a change in tactics.

Turn off most or all of the naval construction and merchant construction yards. This will greatly reduce the load on HI, helping bank HI and you will build some supply faster.

Historically, ship construction was one of the first things to go if resources were tight....at least captial ships. Besides, what is there in the Japanese naval arsenal that will allow you to win the war after mid-1943. The answer is nothing....you are just building more targets. Any remaining construction would need to be the better ASW vessels, which also cost only a few points, and possibly some replacement TK and AK.

Within two weeks of shutting off the capacity to build, you will notice a major difference in the economy. In my games I normally do this early in 1942, keeping enough capacity to get the two Yamatos built, then switching to carriers right after that. As time goes on, I trim back more as the "window" closes where the new construction could make a difference.

Hope this helps.

Mike, how do you do that? I see the "get pilot" buttons, but how do you control getting a trained pilot and then a bunch of total rookies? (I see how you could do that once per turn if you use all but one of your few trained pilots in other air units and then plunk the last trained man into the new unit. Is that what you do? Is there a better way?)

Are you sure? I'd think that as long as I produce more HI-points then I use up, there's no chance of increasing suppply production.
Things look different if you are low on HI-points, of course. Then, but only then IMHO, one should turn off as many navy/merchant yards and AC fabs (not sure about engines) to focus on supplies.

Or is there a supply bonus for overproducing HI-points?

Yes, this seems to be the case based on my observation. Perhaps someone with more knowledge about how the production system works could explain better.  I have seen this in both of my ongoing PBEMs and also tracked using the witp decoder tool.

There is no "supply bonus". The amount of supplies you get is based on resources and HI. How much you keep is based on how much you get minus how much you use. The only thing supply is used for in production is repairing factories/resources/etc.

While I do turn off a lot of AP and AK ships in the queue, I never turn off the shipyards. Japan needs all the ships it can get except possibly for the aforementioned two.

If you aren't building HI pool, it's because you are building too much. Airframes and engines would be the very first area to check.

Thanks Mike. May I advise you not to let your Zeroes play with the Spitfire Vbs which should also be appearing - even with AI rookee pilots, they hurt. That's what I learnt today anyways. Ouch. Poor baby KB...

Mynok - how many planes per month should Japan be making? I'm doing 1047 a month in early 43 which seems to me astonishingly low.

There is a bug that keeps the supply in Osaka from being damaged. In the Battle For New Jersey AAR I showed how despite constant bombing of the base the supply level did not fall at the base nor did the oerall total go down. Short answer is that the Home islands can not be starved out.

Oh, BTW the same thing happens at Amori. Count on 1,000,000+ safe, undestructable supplies.

Now you've done it. The AE team will see this and where will you be then?[:D]

that´s nothing new though... I doubt that there was ever a game where the Japanese surrendered because they ran out of supply.

You can start to do this when you use up the pool of trained pilots. It takes only a few months if you're very careful with your naval pilot pool, but may take longer for the IJAAF. Once your pool is gone, you'll get one trained pilot in each pool every other day or so. Your trained pilot will be the first one you assign to a unit. Every other pilot after that is a rookie. So, make sure the first pilot you assign is where you really want him. If you get a disbanded unit back, assign that pilot to him, then fill it up with rookies. For the IJNAF, a trained pilot (in stock) is 70 +9. Their rookies are 35 +9. For the IJAAF, the trained pilots are 55 +9 and the rookies are 27 +9.

Yeah, thanks. I'm very careful how I employ my IJNAF planes, especially early in the war. By mid to late 1943, (in stock) they start to get shot down much more frequently, but I try to preserve those irreplacable 80+ exp pilots.

There is no spoilage in the Home Islands - so you don't need to expand any ports or airfields that you don't want to.

HI is the key, I always run an excess.  In one of my games, I have had no shipments of resources or oil into the Home Islands for months now, but my aircraft production rates are still fine and I have at least 6 months of HI left in reserves alone, plus the dribs and drabs that come through from the oil and resources produced within the Home Islands.
