I am running Vista (service pack 1)on my Gateway PC and can play SPWaW without any issues. [&:]
I have an ATI 256mb graphics card running the Catalyst Driver set...and have not had any need to do a driver roll-back to get SPWaW or any of my older games that I play via DosBox to run either. Must be lucky I guess. [;)]
As for the SPWaW mech setup...I attached a GIF of how it is set up for my system.(know that won't help everyone due to varying manufactures...but I figured what the Hell.)
It might be my bro's ex's comp is just too much a POS to run anything regardless of OS. It only has 512mb of Ram, shared vid memory. I have an extra 2gb sitting on my desk, but that's what starting drama gets you in my world; no more freebies from me.

Good grief! 512 mb if Ram and he's running Vista on that? Good luck getting ANYTHING to run well.

Have used (and enjoyed) various versions of SP since it first came out in the 90s but, after a couple of years away, am having difficulties with the latest version and Vista. Hope some of the experts on the thread can help me. I have just (12th may 2008) downloaded SPWAW (onto a Dell XPS720 [Dec 2007], 4 Gb RAM, NVidea GeForce 8800 Ultra video card, Vista Ultimate) and can get the game through the menu in All Programs SPWAWGen Edn folder using Quickstart but not through the Game menu. the latter will allow me to go anywhere else but when I click on Play, I get a black screen. I can get in with the Quick Start but cannot find how to get to the Mech Properties screen in order to modify the screen resolution. Where do I find the Mech Properties menu/screen? What is the actual path? Thanks.

look for "MECH" in the SP main folder, then right click on it.
What kind of chip do you have? Dual Core? Amd64? Just curious to know. If I purchase a lower end laptop(new) without a dual core chip will it handle Vista and SPWAW
Bought a new laptop with AMD 64 times 2 chip. I needed one for work. I did'nt require a lot of power. (With Vista) Loaded SPWAW Generals Edition the game works well.
I used to have that issue on my old computer, until I slapped some additional memory in to it...never happened again. SPWAW is an absolute memory pig, so if you have a bunch of background apps running, shut down everything you can.

I have an Alienware laptop (m15x) fully upgraded, and it's running Vista Home Premium. Other than a crazy fast scroll speed which planner 3 help me rectify easily, SP:WaW 8.403 ENH is running great.
One thing to note, if you Alt+Tab out of the game while playing, some quirks do pop up, but nothing bad. One thing is bad redraw graphics that last until I click the screen (which can cause a unit to move, oops). Another thing is that some graphics can redraw in different colors (like neon borders for buttons).
So all in all, the game runs great and I have zero problems with it.
Laz....when you get neon colors popping up it usually means some other program is trying to access the comp. SPwaw is a memory hog, she's an old lady with lots of makeup, and she does not like sharing her lovers. She really dislikes Virus checkers butting into her boudoir. She may be old but gosh darn she's one heck of a cook, and she can speak foriegn tongues also.[:)]
