Trade news: this one came as a shock to many of the faithful, but I couldn't pass it up. To the Braves goes LF Carl Furillo, a fan favorite. In return, we get a golden arm -- Mr. Warren Spahn.

We didn't stop there. To replace Furillo, we sent P Dick Fowler to the Phillies in exchange for LF Del Ennis.

GM/ field manager Erwin: "The pieces are falling into place, despite what some of the fans may think. With Spahn, we now have the best starting rotation in the majors. Furillo will be missed, but Ennis is a solid player, and he will contribute."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday, June 6. The Cubs (5th place, 7 GB) visit. Lombardi (10-2, 3.40) vs Schmitz (5-3, 2.77). 74 degrees, with the wind blowing out to RF @13 mph.

Cavaretta hits a 3-run homer in the 8th, and the Cubs go ahead 5-4. Meers relieves Schmitz. Kluttz hits a 2-run HR. 6-5, Brooklyn.

Lombardi holds and gets the CG win. Meers takes the loss.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the 2nd, Chicago takes advantage of a 2-base error by Lewis and scores two runs.

The Cubs take a 3-0 lead in the 5th.

Bottom of the 5th. Robinson hits an RBI double. 3-1.

We still hold a one game lead over the Giants.

After the game, I called a closed-door meeting with the team. I castigated them for sloppy field play and poor execution of fundamentals. "You looked like a bunch of rookie-leaguers out there! Are we gonna let those dog-faced Giants beat us? Next practice, we're going back to basics."

Brooklyn, Thursday June 26. A one day home stopover vs the Braves. We are greeted by a sellout crowd, and this is nice, but it also concerns me. We are not yet "conquering heroes". I'm trying to save my best pitchers for an upcoming DH with the Giants. Today, it's Roe (4-5, 4.02) vs Sain (7-5, 3.22). It's 70 degrees, with the wind swirling @18 mph.

3rd Inning. Lewis hits a 2-run double. 2-0, Brooklyn.

4th Inning. Kell hits an RBI double. 3-0. Roe hits an RBI double. 4-0. Robinson and Hodges hit RBI singles. 6-0. Lewis hits an RBI double. 7-0.

For the Braves, Litwhiler hits a 3-run homer in the 5th. 7-3.

Bottom of the 5th Inning. Robinson hits an RBI single. 8-3.

Wright relieves Sain in the 6th. Kell hits a sac fly. 9-3. Roe hits an RBI single. 10-3.

7th Inning. Hodges hits a solo HR. 11-3.

Roe gets a CG win. Sain loses. The hometown crowd erupts in joy. I heard a fan shout, "The best since '41!"

We're pretty good, I admit to myself, but we still have a long way to go.

Trade news: After Sunday's games, I placed a call to the Giants' GM and made some trade offers. We made a deal: 30 yr old RP Rube Melton goes to NY in exchange for 21 yr old 1B Whitey Lockman. Lockman is now Jackie Robinson's backup and perhaps a future successor.

(Private note: in spite of our on-field rivalry, the owners of the Dodgers & Giants are actually good friends. Their mutually-shared objective is to bring down the Yankees, who are still perceived as arrogant upstarts, and of course, to make money. That should be kept in mind.)

I then contacted the Reds' GM, and we sent them 1B Ed Stevens in exchange for 3B Kermit Wahl.

That wasn't all. Veteran 3B Cookie Lavagetto was sent to the White Sox. We received C Joe Stephenson.

These moves reduce our payroll, but add to our youth and potential.

Wahl and Stephenson go to the minors. We call up P Rex Barney.
