You could do four UV turns in the time it takes for one WitP turn but I wouldn't be able to keep strategies for four games straight in my head...[:D]

Still, I think it's a choice between one WiTp game or 4 UV

Thats a really conservative number.

From all of the help everybody provided, it sounds like UV will be a game I will enjoy, so I will order it today.

Since OG_Gleep seemed curious about the thoughts of someone going from WITP to UV, I'll post latter with my thoughts.

What patches am I going to need? (or recommended art or mods)

Ok, Downloaded UV and Patches and I was somewhat underwhelmed.

Started the game and the first thing I noticed was the the "Files are being organized, Sir" screen is the same used for WITP. Also noticed that the music was the same. No problem, I can always download other art. I know that WITP is an off-shoot of UV, but expected some differences (like music and screens) to show it is a different game.

I didn't go through all of the scenerios, but the main thing I saw was that the scenerios that I felt would be the best to play are also scenerios for WITP. The play is very similar to WITP without some enhancements. Being use to the WITP interface and the micro-management, I was a little disappointed at the UV interface, but I expected this. I figured that there would be some things missing from UV that WITP has and I was right. I realized there are a lot of "short-cut" buttons I use for WITP that are not there for UV.

Haven't really play long to give a fair and complete analysis, however, even though I do not feel I wasted my money, I think that when I am done playing it once, I will probably play the Coral Sea scenerio of WITP if I want to concentrate on the Solomon Island campaign. Now once CF comes out, it will add a whole new aspect of UV which will make it different enough from WITP. At that point, it will definitly make it a worthwhile game for WITP players to consider.

Ya thats what I thought would be the opinion of someone coming from WitP to UV. UV was basically the test bed for a much more complex game they intended to make. Thats what I remember from discussions about WitP on these boards before it was released. I don't tend to play scenarios in these games, only the long campaigns. As such UV is a much more manageable beast.

I would imagine a lot of the features/controls they added over assets would be the most annoying thing.

It may grow on you however, a lot of us like this game over WitP. I would imagine a Japanese player would like UV a lot better but that is just me.

On spooky's, the last gfx option, the one that looks like the past below is the standardized art set they released for witp.

Reg has adapted to UV the JWE's standardised Shipart set

[*]UV Standardised ShipArt - Allied
[*]UV Standardised ShipArt - Japanese'[/ul]
I also enjoy:
Plane 3D Effects : Plane silhouettes, both top & side, Japanese & Allied in "3D", bmp version -Unzip them into the ART directory (done by Rowlf ...)

I'd also get the scen 17 OOB, and I have a allied ship comparison doc that is quite useful. Its not on spookys but if you PM me I'll e-mail it to you. Was made by a guy who was around in 2003ish and I don't really know why it was never posted. There are a couple of unifinished values and that may be it.

something about the AI in UV that i noticed:

it seems that the AI is cheating about the air operations.

you let the guys fly CAP over your airfield for several rounds and...nothing happens. BUT as soon as the AI notices that you are not flying CAP over a base because of thunderstorm (advanced weather effects are ON) or pilots fatigue, you get a BIG number of enemy bombers above your airfield turning the airbase into a lunar landscape. that happens to me for example with lae airfield and massive enemy bombing attacks from PM.

that is espacialy a problem as a japanese player since allied medium and heavy bombers hit realy hard compared with nells and bettys. so, because of one attack, you get an airfield-damage above 60-70 and the allies keep em comming for the next rounds and your airfield is paralysed.

beside of that, UV is a great game for a long time. i prefer to start with one side and play the enemy into the ground and then to switch the sides and that can be realy challenging even against the AI when you take over the allied at the beginning of 1943 with very few AK remaining and a huge japanese victory point advantage...or to take over the japanese and try to hold the line against the allied corsairs, hellcats and their carrier force with pilots who just can fly forward in their "one time lighters".[:)]

so, you can have a long time for your money by playing UV.

Ya the AI does cheat, me and Hans were just discussing that. I am convinced they can see, atleast what forces you have available to you on the map at the time. Sending carriers back to pearl when you have had a carrier advantage will cause the AI to become more aggressive. Assuming because it can now see it has the advantage. I don't think it can nessisarily see where they are though.

It sent part of its carriers to operate in a region where I had stationed my entire carrier group and had the advantage. Had they known I expect they would have attacked in force, or attacked a spot where I couldn't react.

The AI cheats....But the fun in the game is PBEM....
Of course at the beginning, one needs to play against AI to learn the mechanics of the game..
But playing the AI will give you bad habits vs a real player.

I tend to switch back and forth between the South Pacific scenario in WITP and the main campaign in UV.

My question is which has the more accurate OOB? In UV, the allies seem to have plenty of transports, where in the WITP scenario, I can run seriously short of them.

I could not stand the South Pacific scenario in WITP. Aircraft operational readiness rates were so high, I might as well have been flying missions from Boeing Field with my LBA. The Allied air OOB at the beginning of the campaign was much more robust than the history I am familiar with.

With the editor in WITP you can adjust that Allied OOB or just about anything else that you want to do and many of the bugs of UV don't exist.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

Thanks tocaff. I don't have any experience with the WiTP editor. I understand the NIKMOD GC campaign may include many of the fixes I am looking for, or I can continue to wait for the AE...I agree that WiTP has many functional advantages over UV.
