I'm thinking about this Mod with Michael until AE comes out. What are your initial impressions?

Initial is veeeeeeeery initial on my part - I've waiting on turn 2 from GoodBoyLaddie...

Having said that - I intentionally toned down my opening attack as we kept suprise on. There is not much you can't do on turn 1 - U have the troops, naval, and air power to start WWII any way you want.

Lots of carrier power in this mod. Nemo tossed in some specialty units that are going to be fun to play with.

I think that I will be able to run wild until mid-1942 and then the allies will start powering up. They get new toys too - this does not look one-sided to me. But like I said - I'm waiting on turn 2... [8|]

1EyedJacks,

Aye, there are a couple of late-war planes which don't have art yet but should be receiving it over the next couple of weeks/months --- in any case long before anyone will get into 1944/45 when the first of these planes will enter service.

John 3rd,
This is very much a what if mod which aims to give Japan LOTS of options early on... but gives the Allies a lot of counters too and gradually narrows Japanese options down as time goes on. In addition my focus was squarely on logistics and I think the logistics model is going to play a very significant part in any late-war games ( basically the Japs really are much more on a knife-edge and will require skillful economic management ).

It allows some fairly extreme things ( a Japanese strategic bomber fleet ) but those things are very expensive. E.g. Each ki-264 produced costs 1% of Japan's entire daily HI for example. In addition if you don't want to play at the extreme edge you can simply practice a bit of self-restraint. So it really is all about the options, some people will take advantage of them, some won't. Either's fine by me so long as people have fun.

P.s. I am going to send V1.3 tomorrow and so it should be uploaded on Sunday and available for download by Monday so IF someone's starting a game they should wait those 2 or 3 days.

P.p.s. I'm happy to answer any further questions here or privately. I never cared if others wanted to play the mod or not ( I made it so I'd enjoy the game and to fix a lot of logistical issues I had with RHS and the stock game ) BUT I'd be delighted to help others see if its a mod they'd enjoy playing. Its all about enjoying the game IMO.

Well, that's that settled then.

ny59giants,

I amn't anticipating any further changes but, like I said, I'm holding off for another day to let the 3 people who now have V1.3 ( you and two others ) have time to have a look at it and get back to me with any questions/comments.

I don't anticipate any further changes though, no. I think it is pretty solid and can only be improved upon further by feedback based on actual play BUT I' being cautious

With family over for the long weekend plus study-time I'm kind of hitting this game/AAR in spurts... This is what's going down in-and-around Malaya, Borneo, and the PI. I hope to finish the turn tonight and update this AAR as to what's going on elsewhere.

12.9.41
Malaya/Siam/Indochina

Not anything going out of the ordinary in Malaya. Troops/supplies are being unloaded and normal base-targets are being assigned to push the allied units down to Singapore. I have no plans to do anything fancy here – in fact – I’m just running a brute-force takeover of Malaya but I want to do it quickly.

In Kota Bharu HQ IJA 25th Army, INF IJA 5th Div, ENG JAAF 18th Air Sect HQ EAB, ENG IJA 25th & 4th Ind Engr Rgts, ART IJA 2nd and 3rd Curved Gun Bns, and the ART IJA 3rd 15cm Hvy FA Rgt will conduct a deliberate attack against 5 enemy units.
TFs 33 & 35 are still unloading supplies/troops. TFs 5 & 11 are still @ Kota Bharu to provide support and assigned the mission of SC.
TF 23 & 34 are in route to Saigon. AP Nachisan Maru of TF23 has dmg of 39/74/10.

At Singora TF 86, 91, & 99 are still unloading troops/supplies. TF 7 provides support with mission set @ SC. Next turn I expect to issue orders to have the LCUs march to Alor Star

In Siam I’m moving air support forward from Pisanuloke to Rahaeng and deploying troops for operations in Burma. I moved Lilys, B-10s, and Hawk II to Rahaeng and set ENG RTAF 1st EAB to move to Rahaeng for support of my air units. I also moved Marys from Siem Reap to Pisanuloke (Set to G Atk Tavoy) an I set the IJN 11th Special Base Force @ Siem Reap to march to Pisanuloke and provide air support

Bases in Indochina are supporting operations primarily in Malaya and Borneo with troop/supply deployments and air support (ASW/Naval attack/CAP missions/Transport).
TF4 consisting of CA Chokai and DD Sagiri are heading to Brunei to provide support for TF57 which is still unloading supplies @ Brunei. The IJN Shuzan NGF Naval Guard Unit has finished unloading and, as it is well supplied, will perform a deliberate attack next turn. TF56 out of Camranh Bay will be arriving shortly also with additional supplies and the IJA 35th Hvy AA Bat. Past experience with Carl l leads me to believe he will try to pound the airbases I establish on northern Borneo. It is my hope that the AA unit will prove to be a bit of a surprise to him <grin>. As soon as Brunei falls I’ll be running ENG and air units over to build up the air field and provide CAP support. And quickly to follow will be bombers to soften up southern Borneo bases. Of course Carl has a few subs about Miri/Brunei so I’m running TF8 consisting of DDs Ikazuchi & Inazuma over to perform ASW operations.

With me going hard at the port of Manila, Carl is also running his shipping from the Philippines to the DEI by hugging the Northern Borneo coast. I’m running TF59 consisting of the BBs Ise and Hyuga escorted by the nimble DD Hibiki into the area to try and catch some of the fleeing ships. Carl is running his ships from Manila through the South China Sea due to my mini-KB conducting anti-shipping activities in the Sulu Sea.

Philippine Isles

At Dadjangas TF63 (3 AP escorted by the CA Nachi and DD Hatsukaze) are still unloading supplies and troops. TF69 consisting of the CLs Tama, Kiso, and Awata Maru plus the DEs Hasu & Fuyo and the DMSs Kunashiri & Ishigaki are also @ Dadjangas to provide support. Although I did see the DD escort for the previously sunk Marblehead shoot past my subs into the Makassar Strait, I think Carl should have a few DDs and maybe another CL or two in the area (unless they are trying to push through the Southern China Sea for safety). As soon as I can get additional merchy shipping cut free I’ll send additional INF and ENG units here to start clearing out the allied LCUs.

TF21 @ Tokyo is loading the IJA 201st Div for deployment @ Legaspi. I’l use this unit to push Manila from the south while my main attack forces drive thru from the northern bases in the PI to lock him up. With heavy bombing from the air plus plenty of well supplied and supported LCU I don’t think Carl will hold out for long in Manila.

Troops @ Aparri are still unloading and poorly supplied so I’ll not be conducting any attack this turn. At Laoag I’m still unloading supplies/troops also. As soon as my LCU are completely ashore, they will push for Vigan (which looks empty). At San Fernando the 200th Div is still unloading (along with supplies) so they are on defense this turn.

TF38 consisting of the APD #39 and the ML Tsubame are returning to Taan after deploying mines in the Sulu Sea.

I’ve also set all of my Bettys/Nells @ Takao to attack the Manila airfield this turn. Time to start closing down the air support and eating up his supplies.

I just sent the turn off to Carl and wanted to finish the update for 12-9-41. I'm really loking forward to see what happens in and around the South China Sea <grin>.

Borneo
IJN Shuzan NGF Naval Guard unit will perform a deliberate attack @ Brunei.

Kiungshan
Set Patrol air units to Naval Search @ 14 hex

China
Additional LB transferred from Manchukuo to Shanghai and set to attack enemy ground units. LCU targeted for transfer to China from Manchukuo are moving to Jehol for reassignment orders.
Troops @ Hongong still set to defend as disruption is @ 50. Additional LCU from Canton are moving to Hong Kong to assist in assault.

Japan
INF LCU targeted for reassignment are marching to Tokyo. Units will be redeployed in the PI, Malaya, Siam, Borneo, and China.

Guam
IJN Sasebo 3&8 CSNLF Brigade will perform a deliberate attack. Air support from Saipan (Jakes) will assist in the attack. TF20 is still in position to unload supplies.

Wake Isle
Enemy subs spotted. DDs Yayoi, Mochizuki, Oite, Hayte have reassigned from TF 16 to form TF24 for purposes of conducting ASW operations in and around Wake. I assigned CPT Imazato to command TF24 (Naval 71, Aggression 76). ** I seem to remember that high aggression for ASW operations increased the effectiveness of ASW TFs.

Kwajalein
Set Gnell to ASW with ranged of 14 (normal) and ALT=3k)
TF15 is headed to capture Tarawa with the IJN Kwajalein NGF Naval Guard Unit.

TF1 near Hawaii
Will stay in the area for 1 more day and then retire to the Marshall Islands.

New Britain
Rabaul
IJA South Seas 144th Regimental Combat Team will perform a deliberate attack. Supplies are down with 22 on hand and a requirement of 87 but the transport convoy doesn’t have additional supplies so ther’s no point in waiting. Fortunately planning = 100 for Rabaul. I’ll use my patrol aircraft from Truk to send supplies to the unit – I just don’t know how well that will work.

Kavieng
IJN Truk SNGF Naval Guard will perform a direct Attack. FO= 100 and supplies are 5X what I need.

Michael,
I'm getting ready to start this mod against John 3rd in the next few days (I hope). What have you done in regards to ship production?? I know CVs are very important along with the high AA capable ships.
Have you halted or accelerated any ships??
If so, which one(s) and why??
Have you had a chance to install WitPTracker?? I think it will help your time management when it comes to the economy.

Michael,
I'm getting ready to start this mod against John 3rd in the next few days (I hope). What have you done in regards to ship production?? I know CVs are very important along with the high AA capable ships.

Hi Michael,

I haven't changed any ship production yet. Yamato CV comes online in another 7 days (180 pts per turn). In 15 days a slew of DDs come online in Bangkok (and a CVL comes online around the same time also). Once things settle down I thought I'd look at Naval production and come up with a game plan. Merchie production points are higher than current needs so I've got a surplus growing in that department. Part of the problem right now is that I have so much additional production going on as default that I want to see where things level out at for HI prior to making changes. I have made a few minor changes in air production but that is based on the available upgrade path and future production of new models (nothing new for Transports will come out for the rest of the game).

I now have a healthy respect for Japanese production and want to make sure I don't leave myself in a bad way in the later stages of the war. There are a lot of new toys in this game for Japan that allow for a strong emphasis on how Japan will conduct it's war plans.

I have installed WiTPTracker but I've not yet read thru the manual. An initial and very brief look at the data in my game with Carl makes this look like a great planning tool. I haven't downloaded the file you sent yet but will probably do so 2night and install it after I've read thru the manual.

Have you given any thoughts to the LR bombers that will come online for Japan in this mod? Just looking at their stats puts a smile on my face <grin>.

I've used the manual just to follow the install section.
Manual?!? I don't need no stinking manual. [:D][:D] Which for the most part you don't. Just click of the various options. The big thing right now is getting the sorting done (see separate thread on WitPTracker).

Once you get it set up for your game, import the cluster I sent you and it should set you up nicely. [;)] I'm going through Air Production right now listing the base, airframe, engine type, and R&D date. Many of these factories start off damaged and I don't need to spend all that supply repairing them so soon. I already have a page worth!! I'm turning off repairs for anything due from '43 on until I can get things up and running now.

With Nemo giving us so many options of where HI and other industry can be expanded, part of me wants to do so in places that have home grown Oil and/or Resources to cut down on shipping requirements rather than bring everything back to Japan. Miri/Brunei is closer to Saigon than Osaka. Plus, generating supply in a region means I don't have to ship it in - self-sufficiency.

Well if you build EVERY warship you have available on Day 1 it'll cost you 2,355 naval points which = 14,000+ HI ( which is more than your entire economy can supply ).

So, you have LOTS of options and choices but you can only actually take a fraction of them. That's the point of this mod, lots of stuff you COULD do but you CAN only do a small portion of it.
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.

Hi Michael,

I'm playing with WiTPTracker now - very cool. I've also imported your cluster but it didn't seem to do much that I can see.

So I thought I'd share with you my "rules" on assaults and shock attacks and see if other readers do something different.

Here are my Rules:

1. Insure supplies are green but push for 2:1 ratio supplies vs need as 2:1 gives a bonus attack.
2. Insure support is above beyond needs
3. Plan for the assault when possible
4. Make sure you have good leaders for HQ, INF, and ENGR units
5. Assault force should contain:
------a. INF (Several)
----------i.Breaking down your large INF Divisions will drive them down towards the bottom of the stack where they will take less disruption.
----------ii. If you use multiple divisions you can just stand down the ones with fatigue/disruption above 35.
------b. ENG
----------i. Support
----------ii. Construction if I will need to quickly build up the base
----------iii. ENGR for taking down forts (2-3). Rotate out if they start getting fragged during combat
----------iv. Aviation for pushing air support forward or to provide CAP after you’ve captured the base. Also provides support for your assault troops.
------c. ARM
----------i. I think these units help during a shock attack
------d. ART (Several)
----------i. Keeps the pressure on the enemy when you need to rest your troops
------e. HQ for providing planning and modifiers
----------i. HQ:
--------------1. Command:
------------------a. If no Corps and in range then 10 percent bonus
------------------b. If Corps unit is in range and HQ Command is within 2X range then up to an additional 90% Bonus to Assault Value for odds calculations
------------------c. Bonuses are impacted by leadership ratings of the commander of the HQ units.
------------------d. Command HQs R also important for air replacements and upgrades
------------------e. If Command HQ is in a base the base will try to stockpile 25000 extra supplies (in addition to base needs)
--------------2. Corps
------------------a. Up to a 10 percent bonus to Assault Value ARM HQ provides a bonus
------f. Air Units
----------i. Fighters for CAP
----------ii. LB for ground attacks against enemy LCU
----------iii. LB for airfield attacks to use up enemy supplies
----------iv. Have Transport units available for long-distance ferry of supplies if needed.
6. Shock attack when you see a 1:1 report and forts are down to 0-2 level

It should have the various regions broken down to have the correct bases in them. Thus, San Fran should not be located in Japan's region, as an example. [;)]

You may need to close the program and restart it again OR it should work next time you load a new turn into it....OR
You know I'm not the most expereinced computer person. [:D]

Question regarding Auto-sub ops

Post by 1EyedJacks »

A little help from the readers please:

2.5.2 Auto Sub Ops
The Auto Sub Ops switch toggles whether the artificial intelligence that controls operations for the player will automatically send out submarine patrols, during the game. The player may still choose to change control of these submarines from computer to human at any time. The computer will consider using bases with a port size of at least 8 or an AS at the base, and a minimum of 10000
fuel points on hand as potential sub bases. This option can be changed while playing the game, from the tool bar.

I don't seem to have the option to change this like I do with turning on/off combat reports - can someone walk me thru this?

I think you can only change it before you actually load the game your playing. Select the Game Options before you load this game.

Have you gotten a chance to install WitPTracker?? I'm hoping to get my first turn off to John 3rd tomorrow, but have been using that to see what I need to turn off before I start. A lot of industry is being shut off as I don't think I can afford to repair all those r&d aircraft (everything except Helens and next generation Zekes) plus those engine for later war planes. At 1000 supplies for each. That is a lot of rope Dr. Nemo whas given us to hang ourselves with. [:D]

Hi Michael,

It looks like U R right. I can't shut it off and the AI keeps stealing Carl's subs over near Russia. We are gunna go 4 version 1.3 and do a restart.

I've emailed U and PMed Nemo-san for a copy. Once I get it installed I'll start on turn 0 again...
