What is this comparable to?

This classic strategy game designed by Philippe Thibaut allows you to take charge of several of nearly 80 playable nations during the tumultuous and war torn period between 350 and 1066. Success hinges on military might but economic and administrative prudence too. To master Europe and beyond every area of statecraft must be mastered first!

My main complaint about Great Invasions wasn't the bugs or the lack of a tutorial or the interface. It was controlling 10 seemingly random nations scattered across the map that have nothing to do with each other. In real time. If that issue hasn't been dealt with (by grouping controlled nations more logically), then Great Invasions is still too complex for its own good.

I actually found that to be part of the charm.  A lot of people want to control their countries in concert with each other but this game makes that rather hard to do which I liked.  The nations should be operated individually in each owns best interest!  The piece that took me awhile to get used to though were the raider nations which you don't really control but they still count towards your score.

I no longer have the game, but found I could delegate my countries to the AI, thus controlling only the countries I wanted to control.

What are the various religions (and heresies) that the game includes and can the spread of these
religions be controlled? I'm referring to sending missionaries of your religion into
other countries and dealing with both foreign religions on your soil and containing
local religions that start in your borders or even adopting them as your state religion
if convenient. It would be interesting if the form of Mithraism which many Roman soldiers
adopted while serving on the Eastern frontiers and brought back west with them supplanted
Christianity as the official State Religion (It was actually one of the facets of
Sol Invictus until just before Alaric's sacking of Rome IIRC)
