Amen. Don't forget about the perverse joy of watching American carriers burning and sinking in the wake of your devastating air strikes.
Well... some folks forget the perverse pleasure of seeing the Japanese forces slowly dwindle, and the Americans get more and more. Patience is a virtue but not for the Japanese. :D

True when looking at the entire Pacific War, but I have played the Japanese in UV campaigns where I managed to inflict enough damage early on to keep the odds even long into the game.

I am not very familiar with the grand strategy of the Pac War. With hindsight being 20/20 are there enough options for the Japaneese to win UV realistically speaking?

Med Game

Post by victor semensi »

Please please please do a remake of Bomb Alley. I've been waiting almost 20 years for someone to revisit that theater. I couldn't get SSI's Great Naval Battles game to work. Luckily I've been able to get a copy of Bomb Alley and an Apple IIe emulator on the net to play it on my current system. I'd rather see the new Med game released before another Pacific theater one.

Exactly the Japanese can't afford to waste time or units like the Americans. They have to hit the American's fast and hard or else all is lost. And not just for the entire war but in every campain they engaged in. In the the SW Pacific the Japanese tried to hit the Americans hard but the American's mearly rolled with the punches because they knew that they would be bigger later. The American ship repair ability compared to the Japanese ability alone can make the difference.

another vote for Med game!

Post by bradfordkay »

Here's another gamer jonesing for a UV type game on the Med! It's the perfect scale theater for such a project, and the fighting there makes for some great challenges.

SSG had included some Mediterannean scenarios in one of the expansions to Carriers At War, and I've been waiting a looong time for a quality product on carrier warfare (what UV seems to be, from what I've picked up reading the AARs on this board). I wholeheartedly agree that the Med should follow WITP. Here's hoping that UV sales will be enough to justify the project. I know that I'll do my part (buying UV!!!!).....

True...it can be disheartening to send a carrier back to Japan for repairs and see that it wont be back in service for almost a year. Of course, if it's limping back to Japan at 7 knots, that doesn't help. Hope they're watching for American subs on the way, too.

Battle Damage

Post by Jason629 »

Once a ship takes significant damage, does it automatically get sent back to Japan or do you have to select that option? Additionally, do you get an immeadiate ETA on return or does that come at a later date? Thanks!

Another question is as the opposing player do you get any inteligence reports of ships being returned home for repairs?

You have to send a ship back to Japan/Pearl Harbor yourself. You get an immediate days till available message, but that does not mean you will get the ship when it is fixed. Once repaired it goes in the general pool and must be committed like all other ships in the navy.

No info on enemy sent home. Currently, with fog of war on, when an enemy ship is sunk, there is a chance you will be told at that moment based on 10% x Current Detection Level (number from 1-9). A delay is set between 0 and 60 days before the ship shows up on the sunk ships list so you may not know for a little while that you sunk a ship.

Which adds a lot to the fun of the game, in my opinion. There have been a few times when I thought to myself 'there is no way that carrier X can still be operational, it must be on its way to Pearl Harbor at best'. Only to be attacked a few days later by the same ship I thought I had sunk. :(

You're right. That sounds much better than 'I'm a stupid bastard syndrome' as I had been referring to it.

I like not knowing xactly what ships have been sunk so long as there is a detailed, shall we say, stat page that tells what got sunk and how. How many ACTUAL hits the USS I'm Sunk took before succumbing to Iron Bottom Sound.

Snigbert I look forward to one day having the honor of playing you in a PBEM game. I love reading your posts. :D I really think this game is going to move into my most played game spot once it is ready. I plan on having a dozen games going all the time from the moment I get it installed till my computer melts. Keep up the good work!!!

As a result of my reading, I am convinced the war in the pacific was won by:
1- breaking of japanese codes
2- radar

McCarthur comes off looking pretty shabby, especially in his treatment of Australian allies and his invasion of Phillipines in 1944-1945.

Yamashito, defender of Luzon, was brilliant - he proclaimed Manilla an open city but his subordinate did not honor that. I dont think he deserved being condemned as a war criminal.

And numbers....lots more aircraft, ship and men.

For all of his faults....and there were many, he still managed to prove an able commander. Well at least he didn't LOSE after PI ;)

MacArthur won by shear weight of numbers, not through personal brilliance. Hell, Hitler would have won if he was American.

Yamashita got hisself hung for two very serious crimes against humanity and violations of the law of war...

(1) He kicked MacArthurs stupid, incompetent, self-serving, cowardly, treasonous, war profitteering, egotistic butt out of the P.I.

(2) He moved into MacArthurs penthouse (and associated property, wink wink) in Manilla after capturing the place.

Those 2 heinious crimes were enough to garuantee him a death sentence.

I could not agree more! He was essentially convicted of defeating MacArthur. If he had he fought him in 1942!
