Where were the rest of the Vals? Two days before I'd done an unescorted attack on his carrier's and lost 16 out of 22! (Shokaku's unit) I simply hadn't received any replacements in the meantime so I put the remaining 6 Vals of Shokaku on naval search (they were pretty fatigued so i figured they wouldn't be much good in a fight, and it was more important I knew exactly where he was)
Big Z should make base OK but I'll probably have to send it back to Tokyo for permanent repairs. What few planes it has left I guess i should keep around on the map at spare bases. Shoho I am considering scuttling - has 90+ flotation damage and I don't want to acredit him with any extra victory points

If it can make it through my submarines behind them. A damage slow ship is most often a submarine snack.

Ahh but don't 4get the crappy nature of the US torpedo's. Also I've got loads of spare planes looking for your subs - the safest thing to do is dive down to the bottom and hide there

You should have put a land based Zero sqd on Shokaku in place of the absent Vals....they may have prevented some hits on your CV's.....[:-] However us more experienced players were newbies once and made the same mistakes[&o]

I have been under the impression that putting land based planes on carrier is one of the single most horrenous offenses one can commit in this game.........

I guess maybe that house rule applies specifically to Corairs.

Why is it that the majority of the HRs amongst players here seem to focus on reigning in the overpowered nature of the late game American forces while there seemt to be almost none geared toward reigning in the severe overpoweredness of the early game Japanese forces? [&:]

Recognition of the need to reign in the overpowered early game Japanese is the main reason I have unilaterally adopted the limitation of 7 hex range for LRCAP.

btw,

Miller, I have been reading Cator Troy's AAR of the game that you took over for BigBaba and I have to say that it has been difficult to refrain from giving Mr. Troy a piece of my mind regarding his disparaging comments vis a vis your WITP game skills.

there have been several mentions in threads that the f4f and p-40's are under-rated but nothing close to how the F4u's are over-valued.

As for the carrier battle, I tend to agree that rotating land based air units onto a CV could be a gray area. If you get a CVE that arrives empty and transfer planes to it, OK. Otherwise that is something that should probably be discussed at game start. On one hand, that is a plus for fighting close to your own base.

We did agree in advance (house rules) that no changing the airgroups on CV's unless the game does it naturally. [:-] We were thinking especially of F4U's on the US carriers (none were based prior to 1945, before then only the FAA (admittedly on carriers) and USMC had used them. I did think about putting an extra Zero sentai to replace my depleted Val unit but decided against it because of the pre-agreed house rule.
However it does apply to the Japanese player as well. Actually I can't think of any historic president where the natural air-group was shifted off so that a land-based IJN sentai could operate from a carrier, although there might have been some occasions when this happened. The other way round - carrier groups operating from land bases, happened too many times to mention, both by the IJN and USN.
If however a CVL or CVE turns up empty to have any air group put on that the player wishes (this definitely happens with at least one US CVL) that is completely different, they can be chopped and changed about as reuqired

house rules

Post by Ike99 »

Hi XJ. I have some confusion on the house rules. On the opponents wanted section we agreed to...
OK

No night carrier OPS
No Corsairs on carriers except organic
No Allied 4E´s below 15,000

PM sent.

These are the only house rules.

We have no house rule of changing the air groups on CV except the Corsair.

You´re allowed to put what you wish on your carriers.

Sorry, Ike. You are quite correct. Had it in my mind it applied to all air units rather than just the Corsair

actualy, you did a great job so far, paul. your attack on midway was briliant and had nothing to do with luck. you destroyed alot of japanese shipping and 15.000 japs soldiers on the island.

Bee-stings! {touch wood!} Admittedly the convoys suffered a few hits, but were able to download most of their supplies and troops!
Also your symbol over PM is incorrect, it should be a rising pall of smoke from all the planes burning on the ground

War-flash: XJ vs Ike - # 17

Post by xj900uk »

I am pleased to report the following communique that was personally delivered to the Emperor on the morning of June 1st 1942.
'Last night, Commander G Kasai of the I-21 proved himself worthy of the Emperor by, during a period of sustained bad weather and at personal great risk both to himself and his submarine, engaged the major portion of the United States Navy single-handed in an action some 90 miles SW of Port Morseby, and, after stalking his target for several hours, succeeded in attacking and recording at least two direct hits on a Carrier which was identified as the US Yorktown.
Afterwards, despite a heavy and continuous depth-charge attack by the escorts, he was able to make good his escape and report the most successful I-Boat engagement of the war to date.
Should Commander Kasai succeed in returning from his patrol, he will be considered worthy enough to approach within 30 feet of the Emperor at a future personal audience'

Agreed. That's knocked both of his carriers out at least for the next few months - the Lady Lex was hit by a couple of Kate's mid-month and had to limp back to port. I still have one operational carrier left in the area (the Shokaku) after the mid-May battles but few strikes planes.
In the meantime a real old ding-dong land battle does seem to be shaping up in New Guinea now that the two Japanese convoys were able to land supplies & reinforcements at both Lae and Salumea, albeit with some visits from the allied bombers

However it's interesting to note how the Aussies have gone from marching on Lae to pulling back and making sure that both Wau and Port Morseby are well defended.
And where's 'Dug Out Doug' whilst all this is going on? Has he bothered to visit the front once yet? [8|]

I have many months of PBEM experience XJ and you have 36 days in game PBEM experience. So, don´t expect to do well. The first PBEM game is more a learning experience than a competition. You will want to learn as much as you can in this game, this is all you want to try to do in this game.
