Chicago, Saturday June 1. Casey (7-2, 3.49) vs Passeau (5-5, 3.43). It's 70 degrees at Wrigley Field, with a light swirling breeze. A beautiful day. Unfortunately, the Cubs win 4-2 in an 18 inning marathon. WP: Root LP: Grove

Roster note: while Vernon is recovering, I call up 1B Art Mahan from AA. He has a light bat but is a good defenseman. Pete Coscarart gets shipped down to AAA.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday June 2. Wyatt (2-2, 5.18) vs Lee (2-8, 3.75). 64 degrees, with a swirling 6 mph breeze. Reese leads off with his 5th HR, a 427-foot shot straight to CF. The Dodgers win 5-2. WP: Hadley LP: Page
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday June 3. VanderMeer (1-4, 4.30) vs French (5-4, 2.44). 62 degrees. Our bullpen blows up in the 8th, giving up seven runs. The Cubs win 8-2. WP: French LP: Strincevich

Roster notes: well, we need some pitching help. Our team ERA has ballooned to 4.41 (14th in the majors). I've been shopping around, but the asking price is too high. We are in first place, but the Giants are just 1.5 GB.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday June 9. Doubleheader.

Game 1. Hadley (1-0, 1.50) vs Hamlin (6-4, 2.81). 76 degrees. The Dodgers win 2-1. WP, CG: Hadley LP: Hamlin

Game 2. Casey (8-2, 3.41) vs Thompson (5-3, 1.63). 69 degrees. The Reds win 3-2 in the bottom of the 10th. WP: Elmer Riddle LP: Frank Lamanna
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trade news: we send 36-year-old P Bump Hadley (2-0, 1.20, POT 2) to the Braves in exchange for 30-year-old reliever Joe Sullivan (4-5, 2.91, 2 SV, POT 15) . Sullivan should help shore up our bullpen, as we had no reliable left-handers. We consider ourselves lucky, as pitching is definitely at a premium.

Brooklyn, Friday June 14. We host the Reds for the weekend. Casey (8-2, 3.35) vs Hamlin (6-5, 2.79). 73 degrees, with a light breeze out to RF. In the bottom of the 12th, Ted Williams hits a walkoff HR! The Dodgers win 2-1. WP: Hutchinson LP: Barrett

Minor league news: we sign LHP Art Johnson and assign him to AAA. P Dixie Howell is released. Several promising pitchers are left languishing in obscurity, but we don't have room to sign them all. Too bad.

Also, CF Stan Spence (.352/5/12) is tearing it up in AAA. It'll be tough to keep him out of the majors next year, if he continues to improve.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday June 15. VanderMeer (3-4, 3.46) vs Walters (6-6, 2.95). 66 degrees, with a 7 mph breeze out to CF. Brooklyn wins 6-2. WP, CG: VanderMeer LP: Walters
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday June 16. Doubleheader.

Game 1. Wyatt (3-3, 4.76) vs Derringer (6-4, 1.72). 77 degrees. The Reds win 4-3. WP: Riddle LP: Hutchinson

Trade news: between games I made a deal with the Senators. 30-year-old P Ira Hutchinson is told in the locker room that he needs to pack up his stuff. He will go to Washington in exchange for a 20-year-old pitching prospect named Early Wynn. Wynn will report to our AAA team, and Lefty Hoerst will be called up. This leaves us a player short for the next game in today's doubleheader. Technically, Hutchinson is no longer available to us, and Hoerst is in transit.

Game 2. Hudson (7-4, 3.70) vs Barrett (2-2, 3.60). 71 degrees. The Reds win 3-1. WP, CG: Barrett LP: Hudson

Trade news: we got a new CF on Sunday evening. We sent 33-year-old P Whit Wyatt to the Red Sox in exchange for 23-year-old Dom DiMaggio, Joe D's younger brother. Our OF is now Williams in LF, Dimaggio in CF, and Walker in RF. Now, we could possibly have the best outfield in the majors.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday June 18. Casey (8-2, 3.16) vs Cooper (4-6, 3.48). 75 degrees, with a 9 mph breeze blowing in from RF. We win 2-1. WP: Casey LP: Cooper SV: Sullivan
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday June 19. VanderMeer (4-4, 3.31) vs Warneke (4-7, 3.23). 71 degrees, with a 13 mph wind blowing out to CF. The Cardinals win 7-1. WP, CG: Warneke LP: VanderMeer

We have Thursday off. In the junior circuit, the Indians, led by Bob Feller (14-2, 1.97), pull to within a half-game of the Yankees.

Friday June 21. Summer begins with a weekend series against the Pirates. Hudson (7-5, 3.65) vs Sewell (6-7, 3.87). 74 degrees, with a 17 mph wind blowing out to LF. Sewell suffers a shoulder injury in the 3rd, and is relieved by George Jeffcoat. The Pirates shut us out 5-0. Ken Heintzelman gets the win and also hits 2 HRs! Hudson takes the loss.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday June 22. Strincevich (2-2, 7.54) vs Brown (5-5, 2.97). 80 degrees, with the wind blowing in from LF @ 12 mph. Reese is benched and Johnny Hudson replaces him in the leadoff spot. Ted Williams hits two homers as Strincevich pitches a 6-hit 6-0 shutout. Brown loses.

Injury news: the last-place Boston Braves have been hit hard, as they have two pitchers on the 60-day DL. The Pirates will be without the services of P Rip Sewell for 11 days. As for the Dodgers (knock on wood), we are presently 100% healthy.

Trade news: we pick up another prospect as we send 38-year-old C Al Todd to the Athletics in exchange for 19-year-old LF Elmer Valo. Valo is assigned to AAA, and we call up C Mickey Owen to serve as the backup for Rudy York.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday June 23. Doubleheader.

Game 1. Casey (9-2, 3.05) vs Tobin (3-6, 4.16). 71 degrees, with a 13 mph wind out to RF. Casey has a terrible outing and is knocked out after 4 innings, giving up 12 runs. When I took him out, I simply said, "Hugh, a few too many last night?" He lowered his head and said nothing. Al Javery finishes the game. We lose 16-4. WP, CG: Tobin. Casey loses.

Game 2. VanderMeer (4-5, 3.74) vs Bowman (7-4, 3.47). 68 degrees. The Pirates win 8-6 in 11 innings. WP: Dutch Dietz LP: Orval Grove SV: Jeffcoat

We are still in 1st place, but the archrival Giants are just 2 GB.

Roster note: our pitching staff is worn out, so we call up Art Johnson. Pete Coscarart is sent down.

Monday June 24. We host the 4th place Cubs. Johnson (NR) vs Gorsica (7-5, 3.71). 72 degrees, with a 13 mph wind out to CF. Johnson's first start is a 4-hit CG shutout. The Dodgers win 8-0. Gorsica loses.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday June 25. Hudson (7-6, 3.86) vs Passeau (6-7, 3.30). 76 degrees, with a 9 mph breeze blowing in from CF. In the bottom of the 9th, Elbie Fletcher drives in the GWRBI and the Dodgers win 3-2. WP: Lamanna LP: Passeau
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are off on Wednesday.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday June 27. Casey (9-3, 3,54) vs Lee (2-9, 4.01). 71 degrees. The Dodgers do it again in the bottom of the 9th, as Rudy York hits a walkoff HR to LF. We win 2-1. WP, CG: Casey LP: Vern Olsen Casey gets his 10th victory.

Brooklyn, Friday June 28. The last-place Braves visit for a weekend series. However, we cannot afford to take anything for granted. As I warned the team before the game, "complacency can kill you. The French learned that against the Germans, didn't they? They are speaking German in Paris right now."

VanderMeer (4-5, 4.00) vs Hadley (2-2, 4.54). 74 degrees. The Braves win 4-0. WP: Hadley LP: VanderMeer

Minor league news: I send 19-year-old OF Elmer Valo down to A ball. This youngster is one of several that we will be closely watching and developing.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday June 29. Hudson (7-6, 3.77) vs Errickson (4-8, 5.64). 78 degrees, with a 7 mph breeze out to LF. The Braves win 3-1. WP: Herb Hash LP: Hudson
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday June 30. Strincevich (3-2, 5.40) vs Posedel (4-9, 3.40). 70 degrees, with a light breeze in from CF. Strincevich pitches a 4-hit shutout (5 K, 1 BB). We win 4-0. Posedel takes the loss.

Injury note: Yankees' starter Lefty Gomez (10-3, 3.41) is currently on the 15-day DL.

Stats note: Cleveland's Bob Feller is having an amazing season so far. In 19 starts, the 22-year-old is 15-3 with a 2.16 ERA. 12 of his starts have been CGs. 110 strikeouts in 154 innings.

Tuesday July 2. VanderMeer (4-6, 4.00) vs Mulcahy (3-11, 4.58). 82 degrees, with a 5 mph breeze out to LF. The Phillies win 1-0. WP: Smoll LP: Javery

New York, Wednesday July 3. We face the second-place Giants at the Polo Grounds. Hudson (7-7, 3.71) vs Melton (11-3, 1.70). 81 degrees, with the wind blowing in from CF @14 mph. The Giants win 4-3 in 12 innings. WP: Brown LP: Javery
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday July 4. Doubleheader.

Game 1. Strincevich (4-2, 4.20) vs Lohrman (8-4, 4.04). 76 degrees, with an 11 mph wind blowing in from RF. Rudy York hits 2 homers as the Dodgers win 7-6. WP: Strincevich LP: Lohrman SV: Art Johnson

I make a lineup change for the second game. DiMaggio will lead off, and Reese will bat 8th.

Game 2. Casey (11-3, 3.39) vs Gumbert (8-5, 3.51). 83 degrees, with the wind swirling @14 mph. Casey suffers an injury in the 1st inning. A batted ball strikes his foot. He grimaces, calls time out , and waves me in. "I think I broke my toe". Damn! Art Johnson relieves. In the 12th inning, Lefty Hoerst suffers an injury. The Giants win 2-1 in the 13th. WP: Vandenberg LP: Lamanna

This day was costly for us. Casey will be unavilable for 10 days. Hoerst will be unable to play for 6 days. Our pitching staff is worn out. I have no choice but to hit the trade market. Nothing doing. So, we call up SP Boots Poffenberger from AA and send down RP Lefty Hoerst.

In the standings, we have a one-game lead over the Giants. In the junior circuit, the Indians have taken a one-game lead over the Yankees.

Boston, Friday July 5. A weekend series with the Braves. VanderMeer (4-6, 3.79) vs MacFayden (2-5, 5.46). Johnny isn't 100%, but everyone else is used up, so we take the risk. 73 degrees, with a 20 mph wind blowing out to CF. The Braves win 12-9. WP: MacFayden LP: VanderMeer.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday July 6. Javery (1-2, 9.95) vs Errickson (4-9, 5.56). 67 degrees, with a 19 mph wind blowing in from RF. The Braves win 3-2. WP: Shoffner LP: Grove
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday July 7. Doubleheader.

Game 1. Hudson (7-7, 3.67) vs Posedel (4-10, 3.36). 75 degrees, with a 5 mph breeze in from RF. The Braves win 6-3. WP: Hash LP: Hudson SV: Weir

Game 2. Johnson (1-0, 0.45) vs Hadley (3-3, 4.66). 78 degrees, with a light breeze in from RF. Hadley suffers an injury in the 4th and is replaced by Hash. Weir in turn relieves Hash. Boston wins 3-2 in 11 innings. WP: Jim Turner LP: Boots Poffenberger

The Braves sweep and get revenge for the beating we handed them at the beginning of the season.

We go to the break with the Giants leading us by 1.5 games. In the AL, the Indians lead the Yankees by 1.5.

Cincinnati, Thursday July 11. Strincevich (5-2, 4.82) vs Walters (8-9, 3.65). 88 degrees, with the wind swirling @9 mph. The Reds win 6-4. WP, CG: Walters LP: Strincevich

That's our 6th straight loss.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have Friday off. We drop to 3rd place, behind the Giants and the Reds.

Trade news: in order to shore up our bullpen, I send OF Goody Rosen to the Red Sox and get 40-year-old P Joe Heving. Joe still has some stuff left, and we need it. We now carry 11 pitchers on our major league roster, with Casey and Hoerst still recovering from minor injuries.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday July 13. VanderMeer (4-7, 4.05) vs Hamlin (7-6, 2.75). 73 degrees. The Reds win 11-1. WP, CG: Hamlin LP: VanderMeer.

After losing 7 straight games, the reporters are asking if the Dodgers were overachievers in the first half of the season. The Brooklyn manager responds: "We're going through a slump, but our best pitcher, Casey, will be back in a few days. Don't count us out, as we still have a few games left to play [smiling]."

Pittsburgh, Sunday July 14. Hudson (7-8, 3.78) vs Tobin (5-7, 4.73). 74 degrees at Forbes Field, with a 5 mph breeze out to CF. Rudy York hits a 3-run homer in the 1st. The Dodgers win 6-1. WP, CG: Hudson LP: Tobin
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday July 15. Strincevich (5-3, 5.13) vs Klinger (1-3, 4.73). 71 degrees, with a 7 mph breeze out to LF. We win 7-3. WP, CG: Strincevich LP: Klinger

Trade news: we send P Joe Heving to the Browns in exchange for P Lefty Mills. Mills is younger than Heving and has more endurance. He could serve us well in a pinch.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday July 16. Johnson (1-0, 0.36) vs Brown (6-8, 3.29). 69 degrees, with a 5 mph breeze out to RF. In the 1st inning, Brown gets hit by a batted ball and suffers a bruised thumb. Heintzelman relieves. The Dodgers win it 8-3. WP, CG: Johnson LP: Heintzelman

Trade news: after the game, I talked with the Pirates' GM, and we made a deal. We send them minor-league C prospect Chris Hartje and receive veteran OF/pinch-hitting specialist Paul Waner. To make room for Waner, I send P Orval Grove down. I am actively shaping up my team to make a pennant run.

PS Before the night is over, I pull off a coup. From the White Sox, I get SP Eddie Smith. I give up RP Joe Sullivan. Eddie is the 4th starter that I've been missing. This could be the move that will put us back in 1st place. We shall see.
