I wonder if I am wasting my time bombing his troops at Tassafaronga. He has 27 units there and must be 100k troops. It is only a size 1 port and the spoilage must be huge to supply all of these units.

APD 2/1

AP 121/5 [:(]

As you can see I need all the help I can get. Tom is playing very cautiously but in some ways very agressively. He brings everything to take a base. And I can't stop it as half of KB is still in the yards and he puts lots of fighters on his CV's and uses them as a big 'Cap Death Star'. Then once he takes a base suddenly a whole bunch of PT's appear.[8|]

Enjoying it though[:D]

I don't like to moan but overall I lost 169 aircraft only 20ish in the air and Tom lost in the air 5:1. But I got killed on the ground. 2 Problems with this, the way the game works the Allies get to see the Jap moves and plan accordingly. And only ever half max of the fighters fly CAP.

The way it works is Jap moves only seeing the last turn, then the Allies seeing where the Jap moves base their moves on that info, then the turn is run. The way it should work is BOTH move simultanously only seeing the last turn position then the turn is run. The Allied air power in this game is overpowering and doesn't need any extra advantage. Especially when you consider the Jap AA doesn't work and the only way to cause damage is with A2A

The only good thing is I didn't lose many pilots, however, now that the airfields closed and there is no aircraft to fly them out they are trapped.

Mostly due to the Allies seeing where I am - a joke

Not so much a joke - actually pretty much replicates what the Japanese had to endure during the war... Allied SigInt could and did accurately predict not only where but WHEN the Japanese were transferring planes into a new base... the Allies would then time their raids so that they would hit just after the Japanese air unit would land... the CAP couldn't even fly... (see The Emperor's Codes if you are interested).

Anyway, it turns out that it really isn't so much a game artifact as a replication of what went on in the course of actual events.

Thanks rtrapasso I stand corrected. It is always good to know the reasons for things. Unfortunitely it doesn't help me stop his bombers. Although.....I am thinking of a cunning plan[8D]. Lets see if I know, he knows my moves then I can plan accordingly and set traps etc.

Gordo ...
I've only taken on Russia once and it was a different mod and has ended in stalemate in that theatre. But the overall effect has been that I am losing the war on my other fronts because I don't have enough troops to cover my other excursions & was not ready for an Allied counterattack in other places.

Not sure about this mod, but it will unleash new planes, ships and troops into the mix. I certainly do not recommend a 4 sided war unless you can knock Russia out quickly.

The problem for me was once I committed my forces I did not adequately surround and destroy the Russians, instead I pushed them back and hence they are basically still at full strength. Don't allow them to get behind you and make sure you cut his forces into 2 or three - as I see you plan to do.

Good Luck.

Haven't looked at which mod you're playing yet.  While I haven't dealt with USSR in any of my games, my brother has PBEM game in 1944 now, where USSR has been active for about a year.  As Japan, you can make some inital gains, esp if you're able to punish the Soviet AF early (their planes are mediocre, and their pilots are 50ish esp, so you can shred them if you train your squadrons to 70).

But it -is- attrition for you.  It's going to absorb a lot of troops and planes.  And I don't know about your House Rules, but if USSR is in, is he able to fly in B-24s to fly from Soviet bases?  They will rock your Home Islands in a heart beat (and suddenly you need even MORE fighters over a large aread, to defend against the long-range strikes vs. strat targets).

Again, it's not my experiance dealing with USSR.  But having played both sides, it would be my recommendation to not mess with Russia unless you've got China on the ropes and Burma strongly secured (because UK can attack thru Burma, and puts strat targets in SEAsia and Malaya on the target list).

But I'll agree, there is a "wouldn't it be cool" factor to attacking Russia.

So best of luck to you in whatever you decide.

Thanks for the reply's

I am playing Stock and china is already overrun with only a surrounded pocket left in Chungking. Burma and Sri Lanka are held securely with lots of divisions and assorted other LCU's. We have a house rule that no other Allied units are allowed to be based in Russians bases.

It has just gone 1 November so the snow has started to fall. Should I will wait till the Spring to attack or attack during winter? I assume there must be penelties for attacking in Winter. I need to give a months notice and I am trying to push things along. If I can overrun Russia in say 6 months or less then I can move the units out to other defensive areas.

Napoleon, Hitler didn't have much luck ... I doubt you will too in winter. Have a read about the rules regarding winter assaults - they are highly prohibitive!

The end is nigh

I deleted the combat report for the next two days. [:@]

To summarise - Toms Death Star came in from the North East. I had 120 Betties with 80+ experience at Munda hoping to catch Tom's BB's coming in doing bombardment runs from Luganville. Good move. However, I didn't count of WiTP AI, instead of going for the nice juicey BB fleet at 8 hexes range they flew straight into Tom 300+ CAP Death star unescorted. I think 1 returned for no loss to the Allies [:@][:@][:@]. I guess I should have known better. I am preparing for the worst now as of course I have no naval bombers to stop his ships.

Over in India Tom caught me by surprise and invaded Colombo. This is ok by me as he will have a hard time here.

Next turn [8|]

I am really not sure what to do. It is no use using KB at this stage - I told Tom there will be no carrier battle while he keeps 300 aircraft of CAP. I may have to pull back to Rabaul out of his fighter range.
