I don't think anyone has a problem with academic discussion. But did you ever notice the wording of an academic text book is usually bland, specific and some what antiseptic. Not calculated to offend , but rather to put you to sleep. What I'm in essence trying to say (I might as well be blunt) I don't think anyone was offended with your logic, but your words and manner , despite whatever your intention was, very much annoyed people. To simplify , It's not so much what you say , it's how you say it." You seek to proke discussion, but more often provoke argument, sometimes anger.
Well, maybe my english is not good enough. I never intended to bring any emotions into this particual discussion and still got aggressivly attacked and insulted.
I couldn't understand why and the only logical explanation was that some national chauvinists can't accept anything else but "USA is the best".

Well, maybe I should stop discussing anything here, this seems to be better..

What is so difficult to understand that people might think that their, nation, philosphy, religion, team, tribe or even their own opion is better than others? That's why we have debate and discussion. Take a second and think about what you are saying. "I can't understand why an American might think his "whatever " is better than others". Switch the word American for Britian,Russian or Frenchmen. Or even your country. Is not the national anthem "Duetchland uber alles?" Germany over all. Look in the mirror. Are you human? To be human is to be chavenistic and hold predujice. Don't you have a favorite team? Do you think that your children are less talented, gifted or less special than others, or more because they are yours? If all points of view are equal then why are you defending yours?

What I continually hear from you is "why doesn't he agree with me because I know that I am right". "It MUST be because he is chavuenistic". Opinions are like rear ends. Everybody has one. And everybodies stinks but our own.

A patriot loves his country without disdaining others. A national chauvinist loves his country while thinking that all others are inferior or even rubbish.

Germany's national anthem is "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit", translated in english:
Unity and justice and freedom
For the German fatherland!
For these let us all strive
Brotherly with heart and hand!
Unity and justice and freedom
Are the pledge of fortune;
|: Flourish in this fortune's blessing,
Flourish, German fatherland. :|

In this discussion, the US national chauvinists didn't argue, they were enraged that someone doesn't believe that they are the superior nation.
Look in the mirror. Are you human? To be human is to be chavenistic and hold predujice. Don't you have a favorite team? Do you think that your children are less talented, gifted or less special than others, or more because they are yours? If all points of view are equal then why are you defending yours?
As a scientist - and you don't have to be one, being an open minded person is more than enough - I#ve learned that others have different opinions and that this has to be respected. If I think their opinions are false, I try to argue, I try to tell them why my arguments are better, while their's are wrong. Meanwhile, I try to stay open minded to be able to listen to their arguments, as maybe they are right, not me.
There's no place and no need for any insults in a discussion. Or as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said: "Der Pfeil des Schimpfs kehrt auf den Mann zurück, der zu verwunden glaubt." (The bolt of dishonor hits the man who intends to wound someone [my translation]) Torquato Tasso IV, Tasso.

There are good reasons to believe that the russians defeated Germany, not the US. I never doubted that without Allied help the russians might have crumbled, but it was the eastern front that has eaten 80% of germany's military might. Without Millions of men lost, without thousands of tanks lost in the east, the Atlantic Wall might have been indeed impregnable... - until the Abomb was dropped again and again over Germany...

This is a point of view. It isn't provocative for anyone who looks at it without haveing foam at the stoma. One may disagree - for good reasons as well - or one might agree. But that's defenitly no reason to insult anyone... - except you're a fanatic national chauvinist. In this case, doubting that the US were THE ultimate and only descisive Part in the war is a deep disgrace of national pride.

The US don't have any reason for an inferiority complex. Maybe not all runs round since Reagan left the office, but you're still the leading power in most technologies, in military, in economy and - and that's the most important and most adorable thing - in freedom.
What I continually hear from you is "why doesn't he agree with me because I know that I am right". "It MUST be because he is chavuenistic". Opinions are like rear ends. Everybody has one. And everybodies stinks but our own.
And this is either an open and rude insult or the result of my weakness in english. Or may you help me and show me where I said: "I am absolutly right and can't ever be wrong! Whoever doubts what I say is a whatever"
Without any doubt: I am the spawn of evil - and the Bavarian Beer Monster (BBM)!

Senior, as always you speak true wisdom. [&o] I'd actually grown bored with the whole "discussion" anyway. [>:] This is definately a "dillygaff" moment. [:D] Once again I need to recall my mantra and mentor "Fubijar". [:D] Thanks. [:)]

dillygaff

I haven't heard that word in I don't know how long. Upon reading it the memories came back in a rush of when that word was spoken down in the engineroom.

What a wonderful way to start the week with a big ol' belly laugh.

I'm sorry, but that doesn't look like one of the towers to me.  Wrong shape, wrong height, wrong kind of buildings adjacent.

Does it really matter? As the old saying goes, "even a dog knows the difference between being kicked and step on". Erik has spoken on the matter, and I think quite eloquently, and correctly. I really think we should rest on his decision and judgement, and just step away from this thread.

It doesn't make any difference as he obviously doesn't have the videos in his profile to express his compassion. This is intolerable.

Germans were taught after WWII through re-education programs conducted mainly by the USA and Britain that Nationalism and Chauvinism are Very Bad Things. (*) Live with that, it's your own fault.

(*)(Personally, I've no trouble with that; Nationalism is second only to Monotheism as the cause of major bloodshed.)

The current German national anthem is the third stanza only of the "Deutschlandlied" which has been misused and misconstrued by both sides before and during WWII for propaganda purposes. If you are in any way interested in the real story, just read the "Deutschlandlied" entry in Wikipedia.

It seems that the people who persist and delight in portraying Germans as war-mongering Nazis are the same who complain loudest when The Hun doesn't reappear like a Jack-in-the-box whenever Britain or the USA want to embark on one of their merry little wars.

Point one--I didn't "portray Germans", I simply cited the national anthem as an example that all humans (except the self-loathing ones) generally have a pretty good image of themself, their family, town, tribe or nation. The fact that I was debating a person who is German is irrelevant. I did not set out to attack anyone, quite the contrary, I was defending people for being human. I'm not going to debate you about what I said, meant or thought. That has already been posted. It doesn't belong here, in fact this whole discussion doesn't belong here. The original complaint about this thread is that a member was using it improperly to make a political statement. The moderators were consulted and ruled on the issue. That's over.

Historiker and I had a disgreement based on misunderstanding. We've settled it , agreed it was a misunderstanding, shook hands and had a virtual beer. THAT's over.

Now you have gone and completely twisted both my words and context to make a POLITICAL statement, which doesn't belong here and a accusation which is untrue, improper and a personal attack.

I didn't live through WW2. I didn't "Re-educate" any one. The only relations I've had with Germans is serving together with them on NATO duty (and drinking beer and socializing with them) learning with them (exchange students), and having friendly relations on a personal basis with several. I have never called them "the hun" or anything else except their name, and have always referred to them as Germans, or more often as my friends.

So take please go back and review this thread, what I've said, what others have said, and think about it. If you are looking for a flame war, sorry I'm not interested. But if you continue to make Personal attacks, rest assured you will get noticed. The mod's have made their policies known, and they don't tolerate personal attacks. And I certainly don't appreciate them. [:(]

bobo, anyone who can refer you to a Wikipedia article as the place to get "the real story" deserves about as much serious attention as Paul Harvey.
