No matter what, there will be no terrain west of the Philippines, the reason being that this is an Operation Downfall scenario, not a 1945 campaign. I've got plenty of data on the notional OOB's for Downfall, but very little else, and that's not what the scenario is meant to be about any way.

That'll be for somebody else to make.

Option A please. More modable and I too like the micromanagment option.

Thanks for asking.

Hi all,
ORIGINAL: Terminus

As you may or may not know, the plan is to include an Operation Downfall scenario at some point post-release. Since I'm going to be responsible for it, I thought I'd bring this little question to the viewing several.

It's a multiple-choice question, with two possible answers, but I realize I'll probably get about 18 different answers when I'm done. Them's the breaks...[:D]

The question concerns the map, and how big it's going to be. Would you rather have:

A): The inclusion of the Philippines and Marianas, to historically simulate where the invasion forces would have departed from, but have a lot of empty ocean, with Allied shipping plodding along unmolested (since the Japs had nothing to interdict them with until they closed the Home Islands anyway).

or

B): Have a smaller map, with Okinawa and Iwo Jima being the main Allied bases. Helps with playability, cuts down on the tedium factor and gets the action going quicker.

What'll it be, gents?

B

BTW, we didn't have the proper poll for long long time... is that still technically possible on forum?

Calm down, Cannon-Boy...[:D] I wouldn't mind having a 1945 campaign to play with, or making it if I had the proper OOB data, but I don't.

Have gathered plenty of data for Downfall, over several years, but not much beyond it.

A sounds great...allows for future mods and perhaps some more operational flexibility. And besides, it's not a scenario on such a relatively small map (compared to the full AE Map) would be "that plodding"

On the other hand...

B (with off map boxes to represent airbases in the Marianas and perhaps the Philippines), sounds great too.

My vote is for A, for the same reason that Treespider mentions. Without at least the Marianas, the allied OOB will be greatly limited.

My vote is also for A... it gives the allies a few more options for approaching the home islands and choosing a landing site. Helps prevent the Japanese from putting all of their eggs in one basket. Japan still had a significant number of aircraft available despite having basically untrained pilots

The plan was to build B-29 bases on Okinawa to help reduce the wear and tear on the planes and increase their bomb load as well.  IIRC Iwo Jima wasn't big enough to allow B-29's to take off fully loaded.  I was at first leaning towards Option B, but the inclusion of the Marianas is needed to show the B-29 bases that were there so I go for Option A.

B - with off-map boxes to handle the B-29 bases. Let's get to the nitty gritty.

P.S. - Also, be sure to include off-map boxes for Richmond, Charleston, and Atlanta so that Confederate troops and ships can join the invasion.

The Marianas were instrumental in the bombing effort at the war end and should be included. The more map the merrier!

A --- You need a base for the B-29's unless your presupposing Okinawa has been fitted out for the purpose.

Agree. Option A please.
