3 weeks of observations and playing

From the front lines in France and Russia to the deserts of North Africa and the airfields and convoys of Britain, the campaigns of World War II are yours to command in WW2: Time of Wrath! This turn-based grand strategy title, the highly improved and expanded sequel to WW2: Road to Victory, puts the player in charge of the political, economic and military decisions of one or more Axis or Allied nations, including minor nations.

How much beer and sausage you have? Attach pictures.

Well I imagine the number of friends I can bring will be in proportion to the sum of the amount of free beer and the number of single ladies present.. scratch that.. these are wargamers, and I am engaged.. so how much beer again?!

Would it be enough ? ;)

I've never met a girl who would play a wargame.

I have the same observation (unless HoMM3 is a wargame ;) )

Try getting your wife to let you take up enough space for the 9 connected maps of SPIs old War in Europe. Among other things, marriage = wargames go into storage. Thankfully we now have computers and ToW.

...the 9 connected maps of SPIs old War in Europe....
Even without a wife, I couldn't lay them all out simultaneously! Cleared all the furniture out of the lounge room to try, but then the cat came in and decided to park her pink blot right on Vienna! [:@]Obviously with counters in play, that would have been a DISASTER.

Flirted briefly with the idea of mounting a metal sheet to the wall(s), pasting the maps over that and making some sort of magnetic counter holder, capable of a stack of six counters. Would have needed the whole hallway and brushing a shoulder against (say) Turin would have displaced a whole front. [X(]Still have the box with all the counters (except for the first tutorial) unpunched.

Computers [&o]have rejuvenated my gaming experience. (Umm... starting with the Amiga version of Lords of the Rising Sun - the Genpai War)

Funny. Brings to mind the time I taped another game map(forgot the name, but it was a future invasion of the USSR by the West and Red China) to some cardboard, hung it on the wall like you were thinking of, and used pins to keep all the counters in place. I had stacks 5 counters thick pinned together! What a mess.

Great that we can reminisce, while WAITING FOR 1.6!! I've been waiting for weeks now to start a new solo game, because I wanted to use the latest version.

Absolutely, SPIs War in Europe.

You know it's been done for PC now, by Decision Games. No AI, however.

I know this question wasn't directed towards me but have you ever heard of a game called Axis & Allies?

My friends and I called it A & A for short.

WW II from "42 on, World map, zone movement, plastic miniatures, poker chips sound familiar?

It came with about six dice but we collected all kinds of dice so we could roll as many as needed to decide large battles.

It is the only game I ever went to a gaming convention to play.

Anyway it is definitely my favorite.

I shall now take my blatant attempt at humor and leave wondering WTF!

Now I know you are just messing with me, but I was introduced to this game in college. I have all the a&a games with the 25th anv. edtion as my latest. What I love about this game is you can play it solo anytime. It is my favorite game of all time, easy to play, hard to master.

A good friend of mine who is no longer with us first revealed the game to me back in the mid '80's. I know they are still offering the title along with many variants but I've only played, what was it the Milton Bradley version.

My peak involvement was a weekly one on one game over several months, prepping for a convention held in Philadelphia. We tried to come with the ultimate strategy for a 4 turn Axis victory. That the imposed limit for the convention. Those were the days.

If you still have that game, it's worth $$$ I started playing in 1990 with 2nd edt. A&A 1st edt goes for 200-500 depending on condition. Many, and I do mean many rules have changed since the 1st edt.

I believe I have the 2nd Edition. I also personalized it. I purchased 2 sets and combined them for the extra units and spray painted them with more desirable colors.

I did the same also, Back in the time before we had kids, I made my own board, and painted the Japenese to a light brown. Also had 3-4 SS units painted balck.

I was playing Axis & Allies back in 1986.

WiF is by far my preferred board game. Others I like but not about war, "Age of Steam", "Colons of Catan", "Puerto Rico". I played Empire in Arms the whole 90's, I had a lot of great moments with it, we were 7 players ready to backstab each other. [:D]

There are some very good WW2 board wargames out there, that are much more accessible that something like WiF, while offering a rather larger amount of actual history than Axis and Allies

WWII: Barbarossa to Berlin, by GMT
Totaler Krieg!
Europe Engulfed, by GMT (this is probably my favorite. Such an excellent game)
The Russian Campaign (a classic that has been re-done a couple times) now done by L2 Design Group
Operational Combat Series has a lot of operational level classic style hex/counter games that are excellent.
Red Star Rising is very good (published by MMP).

Hmm...let's see. I remember cutting my teeth in the summer of 1977 on an Avalon Hill boardgame called Stalingrad. I think I was about 10 years old at the time. I never won a single game playing against my brother who was 7 years older (imagine that!).

Since that time I loved board wargaming and my favorite titles in the WWII ETO include;

Breakout Normandy! Avalon Hill
Squad Leader Series, SL, COI, COD, and GIAOV. Avalon Hill
The Russian Campaign. Avalon Hill

and my all time favorite and IMO the grand daddy of the Grand Strategy;

Advanced Third Reich Avalon Hill (yes, we played the crap out of 3R3 and 3R4 before getting sucked in on A3R)

There were other titles that saw use, but none had the cardboard counters wore down and the tattered rules books that these games did.
Assume nothing.

War stories about war games I love it.

The 1st AH game I ever saw was Blitzkrieg, a friend of mine owned it but he made up the rules as needed. When I pointed this out that was that.

Battle of the Bulge was the 1st title I bought on my own. I was amazed that there people who made such games and I've been hooked since.

Other AH favorites:

Waterloo
Midway
Stalingrad
Afrika Korps

I subscribed to SPI's S&T magazine (which wasn't easy to do back then from a different continent) from issue #43 to Issue 119 (after the TSR takeover) and played most of their magazine games. Also bought quite a few of their boxed games. Our favourite were the two North Africa ones (sorry, it's been at least a decade and I'm not going to go into the archives right now, but the later one was an upgrade of the first one _duh![:D]) Bought a few AH games, too.

My major effort was with Nova Games "Ace of Aces" WWI fighter planes series.

Did some modding on that to simulate the various minor aircraft used, to add observer/gunners and to get a more accurate distribution of types at the different fronts at various times (3 month "seasons") to use with 2xd20 to generate a meeting engagement. (Sometimes, given the draw, the best strategy was to put the nose down and run! That's accurate enough)  We kept pilot histories and sortie records and ceremonially buried the dead pilots (Such fun, much whiskey)

Then "Red Baron" came out on PC.!![:)][:)]

Yeah......I remember.

Gleefully watching the blood drain from an opponents face when they realize the trap they just walked into......

The definitive crack! of the hammer designated for dice gone awry.....

Endless debate about rules interpretations....

Uhhm.....high roll on d20 for alcohol run....

The dismay of a strategy that didn't work....sometimes horribly.....

Pizza delivery looking bewildered...

Tuesday morning drives to the recycler to unload the weekend's take on plastic, glass and aluminum....
Assume nothing.
