Even the crickets are falling asleep in here
RE: Even the crickets are falling asleep in here
No time limit on the missions, however units use supplies which get increased by target are captures. Running out of supplies reduces unit effectiveness, so that is a kind of time limit.
I probably play through the scenarios much slower than most, the supplies issue hasn't be an overriding problem for me yet.

When I tried the demo, the max resolution was 1600x1200. Can the real thing run at 1920x1200, and not some non-native mode?

Thanks for your advice Paulfras. I have finished the Omaha scenario and am now a 2nd Lt with a DSO. However, perhaps feeling over confident, my Caen Campaign has not gone well at all. I think I will restart it and try some of your methods. Thus far I have exhausted my forces, including reinforcements, and have only three villages to show for my trouble.

@Qwixt
Yes, you can. I play with 1920x1200 natural resolution for 24" Monitor.

The trick is to use your forces in a "resource - tactical way" I used to rush for the objectives and lost, lots of times. Frustrating me to the max! But going back and carefully plan my moves, using as Paul are talking about all your resources and avoiding meaningless losses along the way. The scenarios are getting harder and harder, i was afraid during the beta test that players using the above method was giving up around scenario two or and three. But hang in there, because its worth it. But learn the usage of all combined arms you have to your disposal. That´s the way to beat this game! You will also find some interesting units to play with after a while, i will not tell you in advance what forces you are about to command!

When I was beta testing, I got through the Omaha scenario reasonably easy, but I actually spent the next 4 months on the Caen scenario, it played very hard, and that was one of the things Matrix changed in the game to make the normal setting not so hard.
And it's worth noting, it wasn't hard because the AI just rushed 10 Million units at you, the AI counter attacks at flanks and at the rear.
It did exactly what I like in a game, made me sit back and think about alternate ways to get the fight done.
There really is more to the game than what might initially appear as you get into it.

Thanks for the advice guys. I have given up on the Approaching Caen three times thus far and am about to try for the forth time, perhaps on the 'easy' setting this time. You are right, this game has hidden depths and I can see I am going to be playing it for a very long time.

Damn these maps are huge.

Thank you Eagle Four, that bit of advice has really helped my enjoyment of the game! I needed a farther zoom out desperately, and your instructions made it easy even for this computer illiterate. Thanks [;)] I would even like it further, but this helps immensely.ORIGINAL: Eagle_Four
Here is a way to zoom more out :
open the file 'defaultsets.cfg' in the folder /Officers/bin with an editor.
change the value 'set cam.max_height' to '1000.000000'
and save.Thats it.

Same here Eagle Four, thanks for the advice on being able to zoom the map out further. Anybody here, who was not a beta tester, won the Approaching Caen scenario yet? I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall with this one.

Just a guess here, vonRocko, but if '1000.000000' worked, then changing it to something larger should work, too. Maybe try '10000.000000'.

But are you having fun at least?
Also a question about game play: Do you always need to be fighting in multiple places on the map at once, or is it possible to work on one area at a time, gradually expanding the fighting?
Does the AI cheat, or are the attacks to your flanks and supply lines plausible from basic intelligence and recon?

As far as gameplay, it does keep you busy at multiple points, but there are lulls that will give you a chance to reorganize. The AI launches counterattacks very effectively,it appears to do recon and chooses your weak points [:D] but the attacks are logical and do not appear out of thin air. You can keep rear areas clear and estimate where attacks might come from. All this time you need to advance also, which for me is taking some time,it seems when I get get my attack force finally repaired, the krauts start trouble somewhere delaying my attack. But that is fun,it is a tough attack and I play on easy! With limited rienforcements, you need to repair your equipment and value your units, especially those Shermans!
I like the game, and I think I am a tough costumer to please.[:)]

Ok. I give up. The peer pressure has overcome my fear of this game. Plus supporting Matrix Games isn't a bad thing either. My order has been placed. Waiting for the download to finish and the workday to end so I can start playing.
Just go for it, Slick Wilhelm.

The only thing I can say is that I was not prepared for the size of the mission maps, nor the number of objectives. It seems a bit like work to me. I like to complete and take all objectives, and it's going to take hours of repetitive attacking to do that on these maps. As far as attacking in multiple spots at once, I don't have the mind for it since I focus on one task at a time. I normally take one objective at a time, not sure if this will hold up later, since I am only on the first mission still.

Hi Slick William,
I am having fun but am switching to 'easy mode' from scenario 2 until I learn how to win.
I do not believe the AI cheats. He, She or It ,is just a very good player:) Also, your forces seem very limited for the task ahead of them.

Hi all,
vonRocko is right.
Regarding the zoom out, there is a limit and the value '1000' is a stable Value and it works fine for me,maybe other can go up a little more. Here is a testing field.

Ugh, I'm still sitting on the fence. I just can't seem to make up my mind. My hatred of RTS games and their bazillions of units always stops me from pulling the trigger. On the other hand, it does sound like some tactical fun.
Demo, please!

RE: Even the crickets are falling asleep in here
I am now playing the Approaching Caen scenario on easy and moving slowly and cautiously, trying to keep losses down. So far so good, only major mistake made was blundering into a major serirs of minefields. This is the way to go if you find this scenario too tough.
