Cool Scans/Profiles, look at how the the bow has the curve at the tip and the number of suports for the forward end of the flight deck.

Yes, I did and I can hardly see the second support on your close-up. But look at the empty space shape between the flightdeck and the forecastle. It looks much more close to a Shokaku than to Soryu

Were seeing the ship at an angle, notice how at the stern you can see the port and starbord flight deck suports, the same is true for the bow.

RE: Name This!...(44)
Well, I am sorry but I am not conviced at all [:D] . The photo shows a ship riding too high on the water to be Soryu. The empty spaces between the quarterdeck and flightdeck, on one hand, and between forecastle and flightdeck, on the other hand dont match Soryu's profile and look closer to Skokaku's. The island shape is as well, closer to Shokaku's (Delete the radar), and again, the forecastle shape is not at all like the unique Soryu's one.
I agree the photo angle does'nt help much for a quick ship's I.D. but I am confident with my bet [:D] : Soryu, it is not !

RE: Name This!...(44)
Perhaps this composite image will assist the debate. For my money this is 'a' Shokaku-class carrier rather than Soryu. Apart from the other reasons mentioned, I don't see enough freeboard at the bows for Soryu, nor do I see the pronounced sheer at the stem that is so characteristic of Soryu. Also, comparing aircraft sizes in the composite, this looks to me like a bigger carrier than Soryu.
Sorry, Brady, but I have to agree with Gilbert on this one!
Now, if it IS a Shokaku, who's going to stick their neck out on whether this is Shokaku or Zuikaku? [:D]

I’ve found a source which says that the photo was taken on 28th May, 1943. The Sôryû had been sunk the year before at Midway. So a Shôkaku may be the best candidate.

I think it's Shokaku too after looking at the pics, but they're both reefs now, so I'm not losing sleep over it.
RE: Name This!...(44)
Sorry Mr. Palmer, but the pics confirm Soryu, imho. Lots of technical reasons - flight deck overhang at bow and stern, deck 2 and 3 openings and length along the hull, % of spacing from the bow of the island, height to width ratio of the island. height of deck of the island, shape of stern, height and number of of decks under cover, and if ya get really gnarly about it, % ratio of an airframe to the island. Nope. Sorry, but this is Soryu.ORIGINAL: Local Yokel

There is a far more compelling technical reason for this being Soryu. If it is, then this is the first time I`ve got one of these questions right [:D] I`m with JWE, Brady etc [;)]

Perhaps someone could translate all the caption? I’ve only got a vague English description and the 1943 date I’ve already mentioned.

RE: Name This!...(44)
D'oh, just realised that in my original post I got my comment the wrong way round - what I intended to convey was that there is too much freeboard at the pointy end for Brady's picture to be Soryu.
The picture of Soryu I posted seems to be one of a series of at least three taken from a passing ship in Sukumo Bay in the spring of 1939. The aircraft visible are said to be 11-gata Type 97 attack planes, apparently with wings folded. I speculate that the aircraft shown in Brady's picture are the carrier's ready CAP, but even allowing for the fact that the Type 97 is an appreciably bigger aeroplane than a Zero, I still think that the aircraft visible in the questioned picture suggest that this is a substantially bigger vessel than Soryu.
Oh, and I note that Dan Kaplan says that this is Zuikaku at about the time of the Eastern Solomons battle.

RE: Name This!...(44)
Look at the base of the island...in particularly towards the bow ...there is a structure at the base of the island consistent with Shokaku class...whereas the on the Soryu the base of island has no structure towards the bow.
