Just found this.  This is great.  No more messing with editing the text file by hand!

I truly appreciate the time and effort you put into this.

Many, many thanks.

Is it possible to assign a ship names list to each race now?

You can assign a design name list. how this is shown in game I'm not sure.
The actual ship name file doesn't seem to be race specific, and IIRC there are only 14 design name files so some will be shared.[:(]

Not yet through this editor, it only shows the index. I would like to be able to show the actual names that they correspond to, as well being able to edit those, before allowing people to edit the number.

That's a bit of a disappointment. The game is really not very moddable.

How practically you use the design name index to give a list of ship names to a particular race?

There is a file designnames.txt (or something close to that) in the distant worlds folder. This file contains all the design names, for each index there is a comma seperated line with names. I'm not sure now if the first line should have index 0 or index 1.

Another update, 1.2, see first post attachment for the download. Added a Design Names editor and some minor random changes to the UI.

I think this will be the last major update from me for a while, at least until the game is more moddable. For those interested, you'll find the source code attached to this post, i have used VS 2008 C# Express for this. If you want to release your own version, let me know...if there is enough interest maybe we could set up a sourceforge project or something.

would it be possible to make a sort of point buy system for the races, so that people could create custom bonuses that are somewhat balanced? (think galciv or pax imperia 2)

i tried to make a chart myself but i am unsure how to value the different attributes

That's a good idea, but I think you should expand on, gives some examples of what the bonuses could be. Post it in the Wishlist thread and hopefully the powers that be will see it.

Sometimes keeping them balanced isn't ideal. Maybe we want one race that is evil, powerful and can only be stopped by several empires working together (plus they have diplomacy of -50 to every one). This race would necessarily need to be more powerful to survive to the end game and be a challenge for the player.

I agree strongly with Shark here.  There is nothing stopping you from creating balanced races, but others who don't want balance shouldn't be forced into it.

wasent suggesting forced, even with a point buy system it could be made to accept the race design even if the current points are overspent or left over

No! Harees Bias editor is also useless in 1 regard of creating new files. It can edit them though. Legends overhauled the whole modding.

Would take writing a new utility I'm afraid. This worked great with DW and ROTS when the races were all in a single file, but with the races now each having their own separate file it just won't work.

It is likely any one who wanted to make an editing utility would have to start from scratch to allow for the new file format.
