I expect the US to get stronger and stronger each year as soccer gets more popular here.

That's what we Europeans are afraid. A combination of a large population and plenty of money could easily make the USA the greatest team in the world. Hopefully the majority of you will find it boring and stick to rounders....[;)]

I swear, sometimes I think I'm the only American that can't stand American sports...

Everyone I know finds soccer boring, and even my best friend only cares about about American football and Ice Hockey. Plus the word "soccer" sounds stupid anyway, it should be called football here in America.

I always thought "soccer" was an American word to distinguish it from their style of football. Alas, it's an English invention - an abbreviation of the word "Association" as in Association Football (Britain's term to distinguish it from the original Rugby Football - amongst others).

Yellow cards are a warning for bad behaviour... get 2 in one game and you are sent off the pitch for the rest of the game and banned from the next game. If the foul was bad enough then you get a red card and are sent off the pitch and will have a further ban from future games.....

What is the Pitch? The playing field and if so why is it called the pitch?

"The Pitch" is a phrase connected with cricket and then applied to other sports. BTW we look forward to regaining the Ashes !

We are all quite shocked.

The Bavarian beer bars across the country all had a good time!

How much do people pay to watch grown men kick a little ball around too and fro for 3 hours+ in a 1:1 tie? They do serve beer there right? [:'(]

That's one of my favorite things about the sport. Except for ots, it's always less than two hours. No matter how uncomfortable the bar stool, my ass never falls asleep. Can't say that about a Cowboys game.

ok in this last game I am watching (Italy and Paraguay) the time was 45 Plus 1 minute. So when it hit 45 the clock continued on another minute. Why?

vuvuzelas

For me they are ruining this World Cup... hope they never go back to Africa if this is the background noise they tolerate. Fifa says it adds flavour... doh. The players can't hear each other, the crowd atmosphere is zero since there is no cheering as they are blowing the %$@ horns.

It's funny because they aren't even really a "tradition." They've been cheaply made and mass marketed since 2000. I don't think ten years makes a "cultural tradition."
