Sapper32,

Thanks for the response. It is nice to hear that I am writing this for someone besides Mike and myself.

Campaign Log - 1775 Month 10 Week 3

Post by Mark Breed »

General Montgomery, after combining with Colonel Elbert’s command, launches a counter-attack to try and retake Springfield. His 1374 militiamen attack British Brigadier Haldiman’s 1542 Tories. After a furious skirmish for control of the town, the Americans pull back with 40 lost and the British retain the town with a loss of 33 (draw).

General Ward with a regiment of regulars (438) catches Chief White Eyes’ war party of 264 braves unawares north of Morristown. The Indians lose the skirmish with 9 casualties without inflicting any losses on the Americans.

General Arnold’s forces capture the Ononuaga Village.

Colonel Howard’s forces retakes Fredericksburg casing the Tory administrators out of town.

General Washington reorganizes the army and detaches General Putnam with a brigade to replace General Lee’s division observing New York. General Lee is ordered to rejoin Washington’s Army northeast of New Haven.

After Lee’s fresh division joins the American Army, the British Army (5900 men and 60 cannon), under General Gage, launches another assault on the shaken American Army (7136 men and 27 cannon) between New Haven and the Connecticut River. However, the fresh American troops are not sufficient to stop the British and the British Army quickly gets the upper hand trouncing the Americans. British losses are 136 men and 1 cannon versus American losses of 550 men and 1 heavy cannon.

Meanwhile back at York, Tallmadge’s dragoon regiment (500) thinking it is secure with the withdraw of Erskine's cavalry begins training operations. But, the British decide to make another push to take the town. This time British Colonel Norton leads his brigade (1180 men and 5 cannon) in an assault and recaptures York without taking any losses and inflicting 46 casualties on the American dragoons.

The Americans are praying for bad weather to get them a respite from the merciless attacks. [&o]

The battle of Medjerda is almost forgotten, but was fought against highly disciplined German troops and blasted a route straight to Tunis it was a perfect infiltration battle and should be remembered as the best fought British battle of the war.

Sapper 32,

We are not fighting the battles on the tactical level; so, no, there will be not be any battle shots. However, if I have time, I will try to go back and review some turns to create a few screen shots of the situations at the various points in the game from an American view. I cannot say for Mike whether or not he will do the same for the British.

(Rains in the North; Snow in the Center; Good weather in the South)

General Arnold’s forces advance on the Tuscarora Indian village and prepare to attack the braves defending it.

Colonel Davidson’s forces burn the Creek Indian village and depart.

Colonel Greene advances on Edenton and finds it still occupied by the British.

Colonel Howard’s command retakes Richmond.

British General Tryon with his brigade of Tories (346) and Indians (355) continues to assault Orangeburg, which is defended by Colonel Lamb’s brigade of militiamen (572) and Colonel Burr’s regiment of light infantry (496). The British, after tough fighting, suffer 32 casualties (14 Tory and 18 Indian) while inflicting 33 casualties on the Americans. However, the British fail once again to take the town.

British Brigadier O’Hara leads a Tory regiment of 336 men out of Edenton to skirmish with Colonel Greene’s militia regiment (290). The British are fought to a draw with 21 casualties, while the Americans lose 16.

British Brigadier Erskine leads his cavalry (244) south out of Fredericksburg and attacks Colonel Howard’s militia regiment (290) in Richmond. Erskine’s veteran troops have no problems chasing the militiamen out of Richmond inflicting 16 losses without suffering any casualties of their own.

Indian Chief Cornplanter (616 braves) leads a pre-emptive strike on General Arnold’s brigade (930 riflemen) that is advancing on the Tuscarora Indian village. While the Indians fight with skill and daring, they are unable to chase away the American forces. The Indians lose 38 braves to the American 34 riflemen.

Good weather in all areas.

General Arnold’s force burns the Tuscarora Indian village.

Rumors indicate that the British have Indians garrisoning Baltimore! The Americans are outraged. Colonel Tallmadge leads his dragoon regiment (401) in an attack to free the people of Baltimore from such an atrocity. Chief Cornstalk has 372 braves in the city, which (after a brief skirmish) flee losing 4 braves and inflicting 4 casualties on the dragoons.

At Orangeburg British General Tryon receives additional forces in the form of another Indian war party and launches a surprise assault from the rear of Colonels Lamb and Burr’s defenses. For some unexplained reason, General Tryon only attacks with 730 Indian braves as opposed to his whole command. What happened to the Tory units? Even so, the Americans are caught with their pants down and only after conducting a hard fought defense of the town with their surrounded forces are they able to win and drive out the Indians. The Americans lose 35 to the Indian loss of 24.

DampSquib,

Thank you. So far, two gentlemen from England are reading this AAR. Hopefully, it is not just because the Americans insurrection is being put down.

Cold Weather in the North and Center with Good Weather in the South.

The Americans hear reports of an uprising in British occupied Annapolis over rising prices of food and goods.

Colonel Williams’ command re-enters Lancaster.

General Howe leads his brigade north to relieve Orangeburg and get reports of Indians in the swamps south of the town. The Americans (1000 regulars and 6 cannon) attack Chief Blackfish’s 150 braves inflicting 21 casualties and losing only 8 regulars. The Indian war party surrenders and those that can disperse into the swamps.

The assaults on Orangeburg have stopped.

British Brigadier O’Hara launches another assault on New Bern with his brigade of 299 Tories and 500 regulars. Col Greene’s militia regiment of 486 men again just manages to hold the town fighting O’Hara to another draw. Losses are 14 British and 9 American.

Cold Weather in the North and Center with Good Weather in the South.

Again, there are rumors that the British are using Indians to garrison an American city. Colonel Hamilton takes his militia regiment to Annapolis and attacks. He is surprised to find that not only are the British using Indians (368), but have a Tory brigade (770) under General Howe defending the city. Colonel Hamilton’s 305 militiamen suffer 39 casualties in a foolhardy assault that inflicts 10 Tory casualties and 10 Indian.

In the south, American General Howe’s brigade (992 regulars and 6 cannon) continues to pursue British forces under General Tryon (328 Tory and 556 Indian). A skirmish occurs between Orangeburg and Beaufort in which the Tories lose 3 men and their Indian allies suffer 41 with many of the braves deserting the field. The American forces suffer 18 casualties.

There are reports that British General Gage has left New Haven with his army moving due west!

Chief Cornplanter’s braves retake the pillaged Onondaga Indian village.

British Brigadier O’Hara launches a third assault on New Bern with his brigade of 285 Tories and 500 regulars. Col Greene’s militia regiment of 477 men win the skirmish this time. Losses are 90 British and 11 American. It appears to this American that Brigadier O’Hara is expecting too much of his men.

British General Howe decides to pursue Colonel Hamilton’s militia regiment (266) with his brigade (760 Tories and 358 Indian braves). Just at a critical juncture in the battle, Brigadier Poor arrives from Baltimore with his militia regiment (305) catching General Howe by surprise. The British lose the skirmish as well as suffering 25 casualties; however, the Americans pay dearly with 42 killed and wounded.

Cold Weather in the North and Center with Good Weather in the South.

Engagement at Beaufort – General Robert Howe's brigade (American) continues its pursuit of British General Tryon’s command as it retreats to Beaufort. The Americans are reinforced by Colonel Marion’s regiment from Charles Town. The Americans (1474 regulars plus 6 cannon) assault the British defenses at Beaufort (674 Tories and 287 Indian braves) and take the town. The British suffer 39 casualties with the Royal North Carolina Regiment surrendering as well as a Cherokee war party. The Americans lose 23 men.

Engagement at Lancaster – British Colonel Norton’s brigade (1148 regulars and 5 cannon) assaults Lancaster, which is defended by American Brigadier Morgan’s militia brigade (1634 militia). The regulars have no problem in ejecting the militiamen from the city inflicting 130 casualties while only suffering 35 of their own.

British Dispatch from the Rebel Colonies

1775 December Week IV

The cold hard winter of 1775 continues... with many British units focused on survival and not battle! But amidst the swirling snow and frigid cold... the sound of troops marching and cannons rumbling may be heard. General Gage is even more determined to seek out and destroy the main rebel army under Washington's command! He is eager to finish this colonial uprising once and for all... so he may return to the waiting arms of his wife and the many pleasures of Boston!

You just can't brew a "civilized" cup of tea out in this wilderness!

New orders from England arriving soon!
