Has anybody played Federation Commander? It is supposed to be a streamlined version of SFB. I thought it might be a good Christmas present for my boys.
RE: Star Fleet Battles

I've got it, but haven't played it. It's a whole lot "prettier" than SFB. The SSD's are laminated and all systems are color-coded. There is no use of the Energy Allocation form, as all energy expenditures are done on-the-fly, while moving paperclips (or some other marker) up & down the side of the SSD's to indicate remaining energy.
"Lose" is the opposite of "win." "Loose" is the opposite of "tight."

Ah, a conversion of FASA's answer to ADB's Starfleet Battles... but with the ugliest miniatures.

Thanks for the links, Wodin. On a related note, did anyone here play "The Warp Factor" or "The Cosmic Balance" by SSI (Strategic Simulations Inc.)? Those were my favorites on the computer back then.

I played both of those. I'm suprised there were never really any successors to them. Maybe the market is too small.
If that STCS plays is good as it looks that will be great. If it is good, I wonder why he didn't dump the Star Trek and try to sell it.

RE: Star Fleet Battles
not enough to it to be honest for a sale...tis a very well made game though...but would need alot more content...like being able to target individual parts of the ship would be good...also a vertical axis

RE: Star Fleet Battles
It's still missing some game mechanics, such as being able to overload shields, but it's kinda fun and the AI has beat me twice in a row in the Enterprise vs Romulan V-30(?) scenario.

Both are still on my hard drive. As is Cosmic Balance II, which I have yet to get around to playing. *sigh*
Note that The Warp Factor was released in two versions. While both had the aforementioned "Klargons," as well as the "Alliance" and "Remans," the later version did not have the SFB/Star Trek silhouettes (I assume SSI learned that race names weren't the only thing Paramount owned).
"Lose" is the opposite of "win." "Loose" is the opposite of "tight."

I'm just curious, how many people here have played Star Fleet Battles?
Oh man, I sound like a bot! [X(][:D]
I played SFB a lot in the 80s and even played two moderated campaign games - with about 8 players total. Since we had a moderator, we could tweak the production rules - and IIRC we could remove about 10% of the "cost" of the ships and add back in 20% ... in other words you could make changes to the ship designs but you had to stay within +/- 10% of a given published SSD which you used as a base line. Allowed lots of customization. I named all my ships - and cared about what happened to them. I think I was the Klingons in the first campaign and the Hydrans in the second. Both were enjoyable - but people tended to drop out when they lost their first big battle. I used a retrograd tactic for fleet engagements that no one managed to counter.
