In short, no.

The US already had a few more ready for deployment and was gearing up for continuous production of 7 nuclear weapons a month at the time Japan surrendered in the real world. When that happened those lines were stopped - as they were not completely up to standards - and therefore no new nuclear weapons were produced for about a year until new production lines were completed.

Though I think given that many nuclear weapons, even Nemo wouldn't have much of a chance

And your point about the Soviets is very good. Any scenario such as this that does not have them ranging throughout Korea and China once they are committed is not realistic IMO.

Nemo seems to have stacked the deck a bit here [:D]

It's not exactly a historic scenario, notice the large armament points the Japanese have. I'm not sure if that's from the original downfall scenario. Anyway, a stronger Japan will make for a more interesting game probably, so it's nice for us on the sidelines.

Well, thats because the war was over at that point, at which point they were no longer needed as rapidly as possible. If the war had dragged on, the situation would have been quite different. I don't have a handy on-line source for the exact figures quoted, but the info is from a former targeteer - so the info should be pretty accurate.

There is for example this memorandum (pdf) from April 25, 1945 that expects a production rate of one gun-type every 60 days, starting at the end of the year, and one implosion type every ten days starting at the end of August (page 6 & 7).

Then, there is this memorandum (pdf) from July 30, 1945 stating the following production numbers:
September: 3 or 4
October: 3 or 4
November: At least 5
December: 7
Rapidly rising number afterwards.

That might not be a good assumption. Nemo is very fond of alternate history -- he's put in extraordinary effort on his "Empires Ablaze" mod. The fact that the Ki-264 is going to exist in this scenario is a clear indication that some things are different: Japan would have found it impossible to produce from a standing start in 1945. Some preparation that did not happen IRL is necessary.

Edit: Now I have a better answer. The scenario is based on AndyMac's "downfall" scenario, which has the following brief for the Allies:

"OPERATIONS ORDER: Opporation Order Downfall

Following the failure of the research into the Atomic
Bomb Gerneral [sic] Douglas MacArthur has been ordered to
launch the largest Amphibious Invasion the world has
ever seen."

Apparently the Allies will be given atom bombs later on. Best guess is that the Trinity test failed, and it was decided to re-design the weapons to make them all the more reliable "little boy" type, instead of "fat man". This took some time.

This is centainly an interesting hypothesis for a scenario and I wish you all the very best of luck vs Nemo.

Trying to out psych Nemo is most likely a complete waste of time and you'll end up just second guessing yourself (which is what he wants). Just go ahead a DO IT ![:D]

We have made some additions to the scenario now.

I asked for, and recieved an armored corps (2 armored and 1 mech division) and two AB divisions (101 and 82). I figure it would be reasonable to have at least an armored corps from Europe aswell as the two airborne divisions.

I did not want too many nukes, it would just upset the game, so instead of swapping a few CVBs for more nukes, I figured it would be more interesting to play it out conventionally.

First turn is done.

My main effort against Japan did not fly last night. Poor weather over the target area prevented my B-29s from attacking the aircraft factories. My fighter sweeps did not find any opposition except above Takao. The Niks were CAPing at max-alt, and they achieved roughly 1-1 odds against my P-38s. That is not optimal, but I can afford that exchange rate for now. The jap fighters not shot down were damaged, and I did not encounter any opposition in the subsequent strikes.

The airfield at Taichu was hit hard, but not shut down. Bad weather and high altitude bombing proved a bad combination.

3 small islands next to Okinawa was invaded, this to provide more fighter airfields for the attacks on southern Japan.

Game has been on hold over the weekend but we are back on track now.

Nemo wants a restart so he can add some changes, and I will accept. We've only run two turns and I dont think he has been able to conjure up too many secret plans of mine.

Lots of action today. I was half-expecting him to attack my invasion of the small islands off Okinawa, so I put up a big CAP over them...that proved to be smart. Lots of Kamikazes shot down today.

We have restarted the game now. Nemo wanted to make some changes and could not get them into an ongoing game.

Here is an excerpt from the email about the changes. Looks like it will be very hard to invade Japan...

Land-based Ohkas which can operate off rails and caves on landing sites
The Ohka is clasified as a float-capable light bomber. This means it can operate without airfields ( from caves and suchlike ). It has a range of 1 hex ( to account for firing at amphibious ships forming up 40 miles offshore.

They are fast, very fast but this doesn't matter as the algorithm gives USN CAP such an advantage in the dive and positioning that you get intercepts anyway. With this though you don't get the opportunity to intercept all Ohkas and some always leak through.

You can suppress them with airfield attacks and bombardments which will destroy them just like other airplanes and floatplanes.

So, when you approach a Japanese island nothing will change so long as you are 2 hexes away. At 1 hex though if you stay there during the daytime you can expect Ohka attacks launched from the island. These can be intercepted by CAP but you should expect a pretty high percentage to get through ( at least 50% if you don't have a very strong CAP... Of note I fired 100 Ohkas at a CV TF last night to test them out and only 1 got through the CV CAP --- which had been fatigued by several hundred kami attacks so against full CV CAP the Ohkas still die, unless, of course, you make a mistake.) Of those which got through I found about 25% survived to hit shipping in warship TFs. A single hit would pretty much wreck a DD and two would definitely sink it.A BB could still be mission-capable after 1 hit but after two it would almost certainly need to return to port. I hit an iowa class with 4 Ohkas as well as about 8 fighter-bomber kamis and it was still able to make 12 knots and sail for home.

Shinyos
They are 30 knot motorboats. They have a 1,000 yard range "warhead" which is coded as a torpedo ( it is the only way I get it to work ). The torpedo has high accuracy as it was, basically, a contact weapon. Beyond 1,000 yards the Shinyos are utterly unarmed, no AAA, no MGs, no nothing. So it all depends how close they are before they are spotted. In my testing I get a 16 boat PT squadron into 1,000 yards of an amphibious TF and it sank 5 transports killing some 3,000 men. The Shinyos all began their combat at 6,000+ yards and got blown out of the water before they could even launch. To be fair though the Shinyos hit a BB group which could just outrun them. If the Shinyos had hit an AP/AK TF which couldn't run then they might have slaughtered them.

Basically Shinyos need to hit at night and in bad weather to have any chance of succeeding and even then they're only good against transports.

And how many of these will I eventually face...?
In terms of numbers... Japan start with something like 10 Shinyos a week ramping up to about 75 or so a week after 1st January 1946. Of note by August 1945 they had built 5,500 Shinyo type boats in 1945 alone so they were producing more than 100 per week at that stage. The Shinyos aren't at all a wonder weapon BUT I can build 100 Shinyos for the cost of a single good DD and that math looks good to Japan. If I can get the Shinyos into your amphibiou TF at night in bad weather they'll do a lot of damage. Under all other circumstances they'll do nothing.

As to Ohkas I get 6 Sentai in October and 6 more in November. I start with 1 Sentai. Each Sentai has 36 planes..

In December 45/January 46 they have the option of resizing to 108 Ohkas each ( the reason for this is that saturation attacks are the only way for Ohkas to actually achieve anything ).

In terms of production - The Japs get 240 free Ohkas per month. Anything more they want they need to produce just like normal suicide planes ( like the Ki-115 ). So each Ohka costs HI. Beginning production on-map is ZERO. So if I want to fire 300 Ohkas at you per month it costs me 66,000 tons of supplies. For every 100 additional Ohkas a month I need to invest 1,000 HI and 110,000 tons of supplies.

The Ohkas are great against amphibious ships and bombardment TFs but pretty useless against CVs or DDs unless you make a mistake. If you LRCAP and bomb the airfield before you invade then you should be able to attrit them significantly... It depends on how well you do that though obviously.

It will be a small invasion, consisting of two divisions only. Since it is such an obvious target, wouldn't the right way to do it be to give the impression that you are going to invade, and... actually invade?

I play Andy Mac's original downfall scenario while waiting for PBEM turns. So some of these comments may not pertain.

1. Do not send your subs anywhere near Japan. Use them as scouting lines to detect any Japanese fleet movements. In my downfall game any ASW attack by even two escorts usually ends up in 25-30 hits and a dead sub. No need to pad Nemo's VP's uselessly.

2. I am at work so do not have access to the map. Going by memory there are two island west of Okinawa with AB SPS of 4. Amami and the other island NE of Okinawa are both SPS 3. There is a ring of islands along the south and east coast of Kyushu that all have AB SPS of 4 (not all of them). In addition,Tsushima has an AB SPS of 5! I would put all of those AB's on your list soon. You are going to need them for bases for your Navy and USMC fighters as well as the RAF/RAAF.

3. Everything north of Iwo is SPS 0 for AB so there are not likely to help.

4. Paramisha Jima and the rest of the Kuriles have much better SPS than stock. I assume from your comments that this is still true in Armageddon. Given the 1 September start date you have very little time to move here.

5. Unless Nemo fixed this, you engineers are a mess are far as positioning. I pulled everything out of the central PI and Carolines but I was fighting the AI. This is Nemo so you will need to keep Truk suppressed. DO NOT BOMBARD TRUK with SCTF. The Truk Naval Fortress is just as bad as the dreaded Saipan Naval Fortress.

6. Ditch the P-38L as qucikly as possible. They just can't hold up to the late war Japanese fighters. Juggs are killers: better than the P-51D/H in my experience.

7. Be careful with your VF's as many of them are on the F8F path. Do not fall for the shiny stats as the puny 4x 0.5 mg armament makes them far weaker than the F6F or the F4U variants. They do however make nice upgrades for the FM-2's on the CVE's. Also, by confining your VF's to two or three models, you can make your VR(F) sq better able to handle replacements.

8. There is a small surface force at Palembang at games start in Downfall. If that is still there, you will need to deal with it. I send the RN carriers to kill it.

9. Unlike a lot of people I find the B-29's from the Marianas to be workable. I am able to do one or two effective night raids a week with minimal loss. Weather and moonlight make a huge difference. Also the Manpower raids make the Japanese cities glow for up to two additional days with accumulating damage. Unfortunately all I have seen is the HI and LI factories be damaged by the fires. Still nice to see it work in AE where it never seem to work in WiTP. The problem with moving the Superforts to Luzon is that you will soon find yourself swimming in 4E bombers. The 8th AF arrives at Oahu and then you will suddenly be getting Lancaster sq at Vancouver. Trust me you will soon be boot deep in bombers with very few AB's to place them. On that note, you will need supply at Enitewok (sp?) as that is a 4E ferry point

Just for information purposes:

This image is five full turns after the full bore raid by the entire 20th AF. As you can see the fires are still burning a little but look at the damage. All bombers were targeted at the Manpower. All the industry damage is from the fires. The base was under recon constantly since the raid so intel is probably pretty good.

Yeah, I believe you are correct. I will use my subs to shield Hokkaido from the main island. I wont patrol the entire coastline, but I want to prevent any reinforcements sent to Hokkaido.

Yeah, those islands and Formosa are my Maskirovka. I will put up a huge offensive in this area now in the early game, you will see more of this soon.

Yeah, Iwo is a dead-end. I will use it to base recon aircraft to scout Japan.

I will not move against the islands around Parashima Jimo, I dont want to take alot of islands in the cold zone, I wont be able to base any airunits there anyway.

Im pulling all my offensive units back to Pearl to stage the invasion from there. Im leaving a cover force in the PI, and some units that will do a diversionary invasion of Formosa.

That is good advice. I really really like the F8F though...I will probably turn off the reinforcements, but like you say, the F8F have gorgeous stats...and jap fighters have very little armor.

I dont dare send out the CVL from Singapore, I think the sea-area around Singapore is absolutely crawling with subs.

Im splitting up the B-29 force in two parts. One based at Manila and Clark to be used for airfield surpression around Formosa and southern Japan, and one based at the Marianas to be used for night bombing of Japan.

Good point about the 8th Airforce. My plan is to build out all the airbases on the Philipines and use the PI as a bomber-base. The reinforcements will base at Hokkaido

First day is done. My sweeps over Formosa met with no resistance. Im expecting him to pull back his airforce from Formosa (at least he said as much in an email), so now I will start the job of closing down all the airfields.

My paras took an island that Nemo had reinforced with an airfield unit (but forgot to send combat troops) and 70 Tokas. That proved a costly mistake by Nemo...

Notice Ive flown in three Black Widow-squadrons who are on night-CAP over the bases. I fully expect a night-raid to come sooner or later.

Did Nemo give you any more AP types? Even a few more xAP would be helpful. Did he clean up the distribution of the lift at all? In Downfall, almost all the lift is either at Manila or PH.

The whole Singapore issue is a pain in this scenario. It is nearly completely isolated yet is a reinforcement arrival point. When I said I send the RN carriers, I meant ALL of them from Palau not the little CVL from Singapore.

Did Nemo fix any of the base development and supply issues? In Downfall several bases go yellow in supplies within the first few turns, there are aircraft at bases without AV support, Guam's port is not fully developed, Ulithi is not developed, the only forces in NoPac are undersupplied and no bases are developed, etc. Any of that fixed in Armageddon?

These two attacks concern me alot. Despite a huge CAP, both these kamikaze attacks get through. And that is despite the fact that they were relatively lightly escorted. This is something I will have to find a counter to. If 8 Okhas with 30 escorts get through a CAP consisting of 80 Thunderbolts and score two hits...what will happen when 150 Okhas escorted by 350 fighters come up against a 500 Hellcat CV-CAP?
