From Sakura, the next logical step would be to do a Kaba; I think you probably need only to increase the height of the forward stack. [;)]

With the benefit of redcoat's very helpful picture of Asahi, I've modified my rendition of her by removing the gun (which I think was a dummy, anyway), adding the two lifting frames and an extra ventialtor aft of the stack, whilst lowering her cutter and changing the boom layout. Hope the changed version may be of some interest.

Incidentally, if you're using Paint.net, I find you get some good texture effects by means of the 'Add noise' function. Leave Color Saturation at (almost) zero and experiment with the Intensity and Coverage settings. I find this partiuclarly good for breaking up the blandness of a uniformly grey warship hull.

Actually, I'm using Paint Shop Pro 8, and I'm still learning how to do it. I'll try adding in some noise to get the texture effects though, that never crossed my mind. I was definately wondering how you were accomplishing the little color variations you were getting. I was actually using a very diffuse (15% opacity) layer with a lighten blend and a light grey, widely dispersed spray pattern to get my color variations....which looked great until time to shrink it down to WiTP scale...

So I've got a few new tricks to try.

Last night I worked on Mikasa, but I'm not quite done with it yet. I'm looking to modify it to maybe carry a floatplane, instead of keeping it in its build configuration. [;)]

Shark,
I'd second the Paint.net recommendation. While I prefer Paintshop Pro for the editing functions, Paint.net seems to do a much better job with resizing, so I use PSP up to the point where I'm ready to resize & then switch to Paint.net.

Thanks to all from the photo-shop challenged. I am starting to learn quite a bit from all these posts.

I'll take a look into it then. Obviously I'm quite comfortable with PSP at this point, but I'm also still learning. Also, the resising in PSP does leave much to be desired, so if I can find something better, it's worth it.

Have to chime in here to further support Paint.net, I use it for almost all of my own work, and because it supports downloadable plugin tools, it can be tailored to what you need it to do. Resizing is great and easy to use, but so are most of the other things it can do.

I have downloaded it, will probably take a day or two to learn it and actually be able to produce something with it. I might be one of those that does my work in both or not depending on how well I can master the interface.

And here is BB Mikasa, uning both PSP and Paint.net, as well as the new noise technique to break up the monotonous grey.

Personally I think it looks better, but I'll let yall judge for yourselves. Again, comments welcome.

I have absolutely no artistic talent so I am trying to use a cut and paste technic for tweaking ship art. An example would be, take a section of a ship out and move the resulting two halves together or cutout a section and replace it with a section from another ship.

I have been trying using the Paint program supplied with my operating system (win 7 64)or the free programs indicated in this thread for this purpose, to no success.

Can someone tell me if these types of changes are possible. If so I will keep screwing with it/them till I figure out how.

Buck

Oh BTW, to this point I have resulted to placing somewhat scaled photos of specific ships to use them as Sides and Shils. Not perfect but considering the limited used of the art (except in animated combat) it is a stop gap measure.

Using layers, and very carefully selecting the parts you want to cut, you can do it. Though honestly I'm not sure how well it will work out.

Almost all of the artwork I did for my AltWNT scenarios was done in a similar manner; the earlier ships are almost completely cut and paste sections (Montana is a good example), with some of the newer peices (like the Japanese #13 BC) involved more original work.

Unfortunately, its hard to even find a way to build the turn of the century relics that way, so I actually have to do it the hard way.

On a positive note, I have learned a ton of working with PSP...so it has its benefits.

Thank you (and you too Shark). After some playing around with the Windows Paint program, I was able through many strokes, to do a cut and paste action that took out part of the ship.

The results were not too bad for a first try and I am sure I will improve.

This is the Scout Cruiser Tone (1910). The top version is my take on a possible upgrade to allow her to operate as a regular light cruiser with a single floatplane. The bottom version is Tone as she actually existed.

I've been thinking. I'm starting to get to the point that I am semi-satisfied with the results I am getting now. I will probably be tweaking some of the earlier ones one more time to get a little better results (similar to the last couple). If there is any interest I would be happy to zip these up for others to use.

The rework of ACR Asama. I'm starting to feel more confident about what I am doing...practice makes perfect, as they say...though I still have a ton of practice ahead it seems. [;)]

I use The Gimp for editng aircraft art but I have found Irfanview "sharpen" function works really well to bring out detail without looking too over the top.
