Just a little hesitant.

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Dale,

Put it to you this way: I'm using the Soviets, who have to manage a lot more units than the Axis. And I'm not feeling overwhelmed. After not being able to wrap my head around WitP:AE, at all, WitE is a breath of fresh air. It's just so easy to use. Complex rail movement? Click on the rail movement tab, select unit on a railroad, and every possible destination hex is highlighted, with movement points remaining at the end of the trip clearly displayed. Simple.

Seeing a screen with a hundred invidual division-sized units can be harrowing, but it's all intuitive. Movement and attack are a matter of a few clicks, they don't require any additional input.

I've only had to open the manual to handle very specific questions (like how to build new combat units, how to co-ordinate attacks etc. etc). The game does most of the work for you.

I love WitP:AE and so far I think I will love this game too, it seems very easy to get started but has huge depth, and you don't have to dive deep to be sucessful, and that is the real beauty of this game, it seems to handle admin/supply just fine, but then I have not gotten to winter either.

Well I hear that the production is automated and scheduled so it's not like WITP.
Air missions can be left to your AI commanders and they will do a good job.
And the process of giving orders and counter-pushing is easier and more streamlined than TOAW.

So it might actually be simpler than both WITP and TOAW.
But the scope is still massive!

Ok, I will. It will be a week this Friday. The date will stick to my mind because it is kind of a life-changing or watershed date: the day I installed WitE. The game & learning the rules has kind become all-encompassing. I can't wait to get back to the game. It is ruling my life.

I was very intimidated by the manual the first time through. However I skimmed the whole manual & did the tutorial & worked on Road to Minsk over the weekend. Both the tutorial & RtM are very helpful at getting going. I have little time during the week but did get to fool with it some more. My physical copy arrived 2 days ago (wow - that was fast!) & having the physical manual helped. I am also reading the threads on this forum & finally understand some of the things that were not clear because I did not have the rules. I am approaching the rules by peeling the onion. I read then play then use the index to find things & go back & read some more. I am plugging away & enjoying every minute. I am finding the game a huge challenge that really draws me in.

For those intimidated like I am, I urge you to purchase & jump in. This game is way under-priced for the content & is really the apotheosis of hex & turn-based wargaming. It can be played right out of the box & is a bunch of fun to play as you learn the game engine. I am dedicated to becoming a WitE player & I am loving every minute of it.

Maybe I should start a therapy thread for non-grogs like me who love WitE!

Depends on what you disliked in WitP.......

I thoroughly enjoyed Uncommon Valour.

When WitP was announced I made this comment back in 2002 or so:

The map ought to be no greater than 2 screens wide and 2 screens high. Any larger and its difficult to get an overall view.

There ought to be a short cut key: Hit it once and it the current points value of every base hovers above the base.

Hit it again and it displays what the points value would be if each base were currently at size 10.

In this way you can set you’re strategic objectives.

As I could not do that I retired the game soon after purchase. Otherwise I know I would have enjoyed the game.
