I'm still a couple of weeks away from starting my own GC but I have some questions.

Factories, do you have any sort of list of which ones to evacuate, when to evacuate, and where to send them (I guess depending on manpower at the final destination - but is this variable?).

A detailed plan no, but I have a overall plan yes. My priorties were to empty out any exposed AFV/aircraft factories and move things I thought would be long term useful. I emptied out Leningrad for example in week 2-3. After that it was priority to exposed cities and moving Heavy Industry. The next priority was vehicles. At the moment I move small locations whole scale if possible, large concentrations I move in lots over a period of weeks. I usually move to a large urban area in the east but for the small packages I will often send it to a satillite city with a good sized population and nothing there. I should write down where I do the move but for the moment I rely on just looking with the mouse.

The damage something takes seems to be purely random but movement of say 1 pt almost always results in more damage to it. But for things like heavy industry I don't consider 10-12 weeks to repair a serious issue as I have more than I can use right now anyway.

My recomendation is to get a "black book" like Comrade Stalin had and write things down. I need to find the one I was using and start. The commanders screen is priceless after you get used to it but I have found you need to write stuff down. Lists of air bases and their plane units (there is a screwy mechanic that basically will not allow more than one mission per airbase since the other planes get tagged with 1% flying if other planes fly), what support units a HQ has, how many divisions are where (OOB screen helps here but I'm still on the learning curve).

I wish there was a dedicated screen for the air reserver but at the moment I tend to use the commanders screen and put up with the small size.
Did you actually commit the I-153 biplanes? My thinking was to keep them way back from the front and upgrade manually as Migs/Yaks became available.

They are still in service and at least one group has 6 air kills, probably one of my top performing air groups. I have put a fair number of night fighter duty, plus I changed all the I-153bis or I-153BS to ground attack regardless of thier training. I have been doing very very little manual air upgrades, I switched out some U2(trans) for TB-3-BG and Li2's and did a couple of I-16 type 18 to I-16 type 29 changes but that is all.

I'd rather loose I-153 and I-16's then modern fighters so I see no reason to not leave them in place. My new fighters are largely in the national reserve training so that I have an airforce.

I am leaving upgrades to the AI since that costs me no Admin Points. Admin Points are not plentiful and I'd rather employ them for stuff I consider more important.
Are you building units? If so how many a turn approx?

I build 0-2 fortified areas per turn. At 16 Admin Points each (this early there is a x4 multiplier) I have to have a good location before I put one in. The main reason I build them is I can attach SU directly to them (otherwise you can't do this). So for critical ones I usually add a further MG-Art Bn, a mortor Rgt and then either an AA or AT Rgt. I may look into sappers in the future to give them some infantry strength, but my main aim is to thicken the defenders guns. But it takes around 6 weeks before the zone is useful so the location has to be threatened but which will be only in combat in a month or more. Also it is worth leaving them to fight rather than be disbanded if they are in a place the German has to take. The reason is that a lot of the unit will escape the surrender event. So you get back about half the strength of the formation which is a good trade for forcing the german player to actually attack.

I build usually 6 or more support units a turn. I am building things like AA Bn, AT Rgt, Mortar Rgt, Construction Bn, Corps Artillary units plus trying to give each Air command unit a PVO AA Rgt and PVO AA Bn. Also I check what I lost and find out where and then replace it.

At the x4 multiplier cost I can't even think of building Bde or Div. But also there is little need since I am still getting lots of new builds from the replacement que.

I've been stockpiling +10 Admin Points per turn just in case I need to switch an army from front to front or dismiss a leader or something. So what I do in the turn is limited to what I can do with 40 Admin Points.
Are you building any forts along future 1942 defensive lines?

Not exactly but what I do is when a unit shows up I move it one turns movement forward to the nearest city of town I can reach then de-train it there. I then leave it to build up for as long as I can before re-deploying forward. So I have units in all the eastern Ukraine cities plus a lot of the 42 objectives. But this is a consiquence of my tendency to keep a substantial reserve rather than a planed defensive posture.

Thanks in advance. Enjoying the AAR.

You're welcome and thanks for saying so.

And yes the recon boys are sure good...but the R-5 looks like a WW1 bi-plane...and it shoots down Me109's ....with Spit!

On the air side of things I did pretty much the opposite.

I pulled everything back beyond Moscow as rapidly as possible and set my Doctrine to 120% from turn 1.

Then I spent a portion of my Admin points each turn upgrading to modern fighters and IL2s wherever possible.

After the Spring thaw in '42 I unleashed a whole new Red Air Force on the enemy.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I imagine each Russian player will have a slightly different strategy but I am starting from scratch and see what is working or not, for you gives me a starting point.

I just started OP Barbarossa yesterday to play around with some of these "BIG" issues. Took me an hour to figure out how to move Heavy Industry out of Minsk. Still have to figure out the manpower requirements and how to find where to move the industry.

Got a good grasp of support levels, building support units.

Have a strategy for the Air Force, differs from yours, but again I think experimentation is the key - how else will Russian Players improve.

Admin points - I like the 10 point reserve per turn. Good thinking there.

Building Divisions - was not sure how aggressive I needed to be, so your input very helpful.

Forts - not sure about those yet.

Thanks for taking the time to reply with the detailed post.

We aren't doing that much too differently, just different ways of accomplishing the same thing. The bulk of my modern fighters are in the national air reserve. The others around Moscow. Most of my IL-2's are in the national air reserve as well. The AI is doing a good job upgrading and I think this sort of thing is not something I need mess around with, I make the changes only if I see a real need such as giving myself some units capable of dropping my airborne Bdes otherwise I leave this up to the AI. Part of this is balancing out playing at normal, so I haven't been doing much in the way of officer changes and I have been leaving the airforces upgrades alone as well.

I know that historically the VVS was moved east to rebuild and I can see why this happened but I don't see why I should not use up my obsolete planes as I pull my lines back.

I've only added in the LTAP groups, the NBAP groups and in the case of the Bryansk and Reserve Fronts modern air groups to bring them up to some level of capacity. I only brought out for this front Bn sized IL-2 formations and some spare SB2 bomber groups I had in the national reserve. I also pulled out my I-16 type 24/29 groups with a stiffening of modern fighters for the Bryansk front.

The AI has concentrated his air power in two groups, one supporting the push for moscow, the other for the push of Kiev. Army Group North seems to have virtually no air cover. Most of the time even my daylight air strikes don't face air opposition.

I hope in spring of 1942 I will have a whole new air force as well. My stocks of the obsolete crap fighters are running out which I think is better than having it pile up somewhere. I have my doctrines set to 25% fly and then 100% fighters, and 40% ground support or air strikes, and 50% on base attacks (if memory serves). I still get pathetic numbers of ground support planes flying.

Hi Paul - OK, I get you. Makes complete sense and I was only contrasting my approach. I haven't a clue whether or not what I have done gives me any benefits or not.

Comsolut:

1. Make sure that you build up as large a pool of admin points as possible for June '42 when you can start forming Soviet Corps-level units. I had 250 in the pool and I needed at least 600. Corps level units allow you to eventually get the power of 9 infantry divisions into a single hex, so they are one of the keys to victory.

2. I have only built 1 division since the game started - you will get a large number of reserve units appearing and your admin point are valuable. Here is how I used mine over the first 10 turns or so:

- Replacing STAVKA and FRONT level leaders.
- Slowly upgrading the Air Force.
- Building fortified lines (Leningrad-Volkov, Smolensk, Moscow). Keep in mind that once Leningrad falls the Finns will attack you, so you need to be prepared for that with good reserves and a strong line of forts.
- Reassigning units to HQs to shorten command ranges and even out the burden of work between higher HQs. (Remember that units attached to STAVKA - white - can reassign to their first new HQ at zero admin point cost, so gather these STAVKA units - including new reserves - around the Army HQ you plan to use and you can create a new Army en masse at zero cost.
- Build RR support units at STAVKA level a few turns before you start to counter attack. STAVKA will send them out to auto-repair your network for you and it does a pretty decent job without human intervention.

3. I moved all my industry early and held onto all of my cities as strong points - the AI hesitates to attack these and they buy you valuable time while degrading his supply net.

4. Use the river lines for your defence - the bigger rivers are better, obviously. This significantly increases the strength of your line.

5. Start building a reserve for your winter '41 counter-offensive. You can inflict up to 1.5m casualties on the enemy then, but wait until the true Blizzard period arrives before you launch, to get the maximum effect.

6. The mud is your friend. Use that period to refit and relocate BY RAIL, reassign units to HQs and move in better leaders.

Excellent advice and gives me a target to aim for.

What attributes are you looking for? Admin?
I moved all my industry early

I finally figured out how to move the industry. Any advice on where to send the industry, what criteria do you use, are there offmap locations I can send them?

Again, good advice for planning.

You don't really need to build Soviet divisions in the early part of the game; you get plenty of them arriving from the far East, or new ones built on their own.

Hi.

I went for Admin at STAVKA level and Infantry/Mech plus political at all other levels. I have no idea if this makes sense or not as I haven't studied that part of the game system yet.

The industry I just sent to the larger cities in the Urals. Again, I didn't apply much science to this, but I seem to be getting a good flow of tanks and AC now. I don't see any off-map options.

25/9/41 STAVKA

The last three weeks have been extremely tense for the staff in the operations centre. Made more so by Comrade Stalin's personal oversight of performance. For Markian Popov (Leningrad Front CO) and Stepan Kalinin (24 Army CO) their efforts have been rewarded with promotion to the rank of General-Polkovnik. General-Mayor Pyotr Filatov has been retired, we are informed, to dacca near Novosibersk and General-Leytenant Pavel Artemev takes over command of the 13th Army. For Northwest Air Command commander Aleksei Ionov things go differently. He is forcably retired by NKVD firing squad, continueing the trend Comrad Stalin has established towards Air Generals who fail to perform. General-Mayor Fyodor Falakeev takes over command of Northwest Air Command.

Everywhere people pray for an early onset of the yearly rain. This would give us a much needed breathing space to recover our strength and dig our lines in deeper. However, on a positive note the last two weeks of fighting has not seen a single combat unit lost, only small regimental support groups have been overwhelmed.

Leningrad Front

The news is generally positive. Finnish forces seem to be redeploying, their army is movng back and their Air Force is moving up. Attacks launched agains the 2nd Guards Division were repulsed with few losses. Additionally, re-evaluating recent combat reports several battalions of sappers have been raised to be incorporated in the network of fortified strong point protecting Leningrad proper as well as Novogrod. Skirmishing near the city of Novogrod continues and the 28th Army has reinforced the troops attempting to recover the lost ground. The Hitlerite invader's forces are slowly wearing down so maybe this week they will hold their ground. Additional reinforcements are currently training in camps along the northern rail line. The forces of the enemy are still only 40 km from the outskirts of Leningrad so concern is high.

The advance of the Finnish air force to within striking range of Leningrad is greeted with a series of day and night air strikes agains their bases. The destruction of the Finnish fighter force is given hightest priority.

Northwestern Front

Riga has falledn, somewhere over 120,000 enemy troops well supported by artillery and tanks assaulted the city. Seeing the mass of troops the CO's of the 22nd NKVD and the 67th Rifle division commendeered everything that could float and when the attack started managed to convoy their troops out to the nearby port town of Kuressare. Something over 2 Rgt's of troops were lost holding the harbor as their commrades escaped to continue the fight.

The 27th Army has been forced to withdraw eastward under pressure across the Navra. The invader has now linked forces but the line on the Narva itself is solid. The 27th will also become responsible for a portion of the Luga line in the next week. The 11th Army continues to withdraw it's exposed troops from fortification to fortification along the rail line parelleling the Narva river. In addition the 180th, 207th Rifle division supported by the 46th Tank Bde have stood off repeated enemy attacks before being forced back over the Luga. This area south of the Luga near Kingisepp has seen intense combat in the last few weeks as the 11th Army has forced the enemy to pay in men, tanks and more importantly time to advance. The 11th Army is planned to withdraw to the rear and take up positions digging in a new line of defence and to allow its troops a chance to recover, of all the units in the Northwest Front its forces have been in combat the most. The 8th Army is primarily responsible for the Luga line (west) and its troops supported by Naval Infantry Bde's have stood off two probes by mechanized forces.

The 5th Airborne Corps conducted the first combat jump of the war in a joint operation with the forces of the 48th and 31st armies against a Security Rgt. They dropped near the river north of Staraya Russa and became immediately involved in a series of small firefights with the rear area troops of a HQ unit, driving them off. The security Rgt was driven off in disarray. Unfortunately the approximately battalion sized force of the 8th Bde were themselves overrun by an advancing infantry divison but still it was valuable experience.

Image

22nd/31st Armies (STAVKA)

The wound seems to be no longer bleeding. All combat ready reserves have been poured into the breach and last week in two decisive battles the invaders were checked. The 246th Rifle division of the 31st Army plus the HQ troops of the 31st and 48th Armies stood off the 87th Infantrie division. On the other side of the salient, the 22nd Armies 17th Rifle and 194 Mountain Divisions withstood a major assault from the 28th Jäger Division, and the 102nd and 256th Infantrie Divisions supported by over 200 bombers. The newly arrived, after 3 weeks of rail movment, 2nd Rifle divison has reinforced this position. Meanwhile the 21st and 32nd Rifle divisions have detrained near Valdai and next week will move into blocking positions. These are two very strong divisions fresh from the far east. The 48th Armies forces have been active driving off enemy security regiments and harrassing the enemies control with cavalry sweeps.

The situation is hopefully stabilizing but still 17 infantrie divisons, 1 security division and 2 motorized Bde of the enemy are in the region, this is a very strong force that can't be allowed to break through.

Reserve Front

Serious fighting over the same areas of ground have occured in the areas between Vyzma and Rhzhev. The invaders Pz and motorized divisions have three times forced the reserve front's infantry out of the woods north of Vyzma only to have their light security screen driven away and the weary men of the Rifle divisons to return to begin digging in. The forest is shattered from the bombs and it is littered with burned out vehicles and downed aircraft. Cavalry continuously sweeps over areas the enemy thinks it controls. The cost of these actions have been high but it has boughten precious time for the forces near Moscow to dig in deeper. The largest counter attack pitted 2 Rifle divisions against the troops of a security division which was driven back. The 107th Tank division lost most of its T26 tanks to sudden arrival of a large number of enemy Quad-20mm AA guns firing at long range during the capture of the woods west of Vyzma.

Nightly our bombers strike at the enemy air bases while other units harrass their combat forces. The air craft of the Long Range Air Command and the Moscow Air command conduct strikes agains the enemies combat forces during the day.

Image

Western Front

The invaders infantry have been fighting our men near Spas Demennsk and slowly they are making progress. The soldiers grimly defend their ground and the lines have been relatively stable for the last few weeks. Counter attacks against weak enemy forces have occured regularily. The situation for the 13th Army defnding north and west of Bryansk has been quiet for the last two weeks as the enemy declines to assault thier positons.

Bryansk Front

The Front has been now in continous combat for nearly 3 weeks. General-Leytenent F. Remezov ordered the 3rd, 32nd and 50th Armies to stand and fight while tasking the 37th Army with screening the gaps. Three invading divisions that had driven deep in the lines were nearly surrounded but they could not be isolated. The 3rd Army withdrew to the forests south of the Besed while the 32nd tried to hold the rail line east of Gomel. The invader drove into the 32nd driving them back from their positions in the first week then turned and hammered the 3rd Army then next week. The Pz divisions sweep over the 3rd Army like a scyth and only in the initial battles where a sapper company used a hidden roadblock and flamethrowers to destroy an advanced tank force did the enemy suffer armour losses of note. Poor choice of retreat paths punished the Rifle divisions and almost half the army was thrown into a paniced rout. The mobility of the enemies armoured forces dwarfs our significantly.

Still the need to attack the troops of the 3rd and 50th Armies has bought us 3 weeks to dig in along the Desna river. The 38th Army, 5th Cavalry Corps and 4th Airborne Corps have been busy fortifiying the east bank of the Desna while strong resevres have filled out the 50th Army defending Bryansk. The 50th Tank division was hit by repeated air strikes while attempting to move accross the Desna, it lost nearly 2000 men to bombing alone. Unfortunately it is likely to wrecked by enemy action in the next week, all other units of the 37th Army made it accross the Desna.

The decision to turn his panzer forces south has caused a strategic nightmare that can only be fully recified by mud, but that the SW Front is not threatened by envelopment rests solely with the men of the 3rd, 32nd and 50th Armies who have paid a price in blood to slow the enemy advanc.

Image

Southwest Front

The 12th Army was struck by the enemies LVII Panzer Korps. In a series of battles near Chevsaky they struggled to hold the enemy off being driven back by full scaled armoured onslaughts. The area around Lysyanka has seen attack and counter attack. The 11 Pz. Division, Slovak Mobile Division, 25 Motorized Division, 4 Geburgsjäger Division and the 2nd Hungarian Motorized Bde drove back the 39th Tank Division, and the 96th and 192nd Mountain Divisions. The 12th Army mounted a counterattack agains the 11th Romanian Infantry Division that had moved up to occupy the ground consisting of the 15th and 39th Tank Divisions, the 240 Motorized Division, and the 60th, 96th, and 192nd Mountain Divisions. The forces drove through the Romanian infantry and sent them fleeing westward but were unable to occupy the ground.

Panzer Forces striking the 164th Infantry division changed the strategic picture for General-Polknvik Kiriponos. He realized he could no longer hold the enemy at bay from the bank of the Dnepr or he risked the envelopment of the 12th Army which has commited all its reserves. He orders a major movement of troops. The forces under his direct command remain clustered near Kiev, supported by the 5th Army which holds the banks of the Dnepr, the 6th, 16th and 26th Armies withdraw from their blockng positions south and west of Kiev. The 6th Army takes over defense of the Dnepr between Chevsaky's vital bridges and the 5th Army. The 16th Army's Rifle divisions move into Chevsaky itself as a garrision force. The 26th Army moves into the badlands north of Chevsaky securing the 12th Armies flank.

The Airborne Corps is sent north to begin fortifications south of the Desna. The 16th Army is designated as the Front Reserve.

The situation is not idea for the SW Front but the 12th Army position is vital to the security of the Southern Front holding along the Bug. If the 12th is displaced the Southern Front will be forced to move significantly eastward.

Southern Front

The last few weeks have been trying times for the Southern Front. Unseasonably early mud made their movement eastward significantly slower then anticipated in the planing. Worse the enemy sent his Panzer forces south and the 16th tank division with nearly 100 T34-M1941's was nearly cut off. The 16th made it back to the lines on the Bug before being caught by the 1st Romanian Armoured Division, and the 50th and 296 Infantrie divisions. The battle was hard fought but the division was driven back across the bug ((nearly held...the final odds were 2.1:1 wow!)) with most of its T34's intact.

The Cavalry screens were badly mauled by the enemies Panzer divsions as well but all the troops of the Southern Front are now on the east side of the Bug river. The Front has gained the 51st Army (CO: General-Leytenant A. Eremenko) which now has all Tank Divisions and Bde's under its control. The Coastal Army has taken over responsibility for the Sevastapol region. The 7th Naval Infantry Bde. garrisoning Odessa was attacked by the 15th Romanian division and easly stood off the attack. However, it was withdrawn by ship as there seemed little reason to risk the Bde as the city was doomed as the Southern Front was already behind the bug and no signficant enemy force was involved in the attacks.

The situation for the front is perilous. Should the 12th Army be seriously displaced the Front will have to withdraw to the Irgul River line and Kirovograd possibly bringing the 19th Army across the Dnepr to hold the ground between the Dnepr and the Kirovograd. The troops have not had much time to dig defences though prepared positions exist for the rail crossings. Any crossing will have to be counter attacked by the 51st Army.

VVS

The night attacks on the enemy air fields continue. Daylight raids on some of the most exposed airfields have yielded good results. The 11A airbase has only 26 operation planes after the last weeks attacks. This weeks raid was met with fighter interception so the bombers of the 4th BAK may have to switch to night operations.

Player Notes:

I turned up the combat resolution and watched several battles to see what was going on. I now understand the situation better and I recommend everyone give this a go. What seems to happen is you get a phase where the heavy artillery fires from each side. Then the lighter artillery and heavy mortar's then there seems a mix of light mortar's, guns and men. Mortar's really do a lot of damage because they fire a lot. I also saw that the tanks use their machine guns against infantry. What seems very odd is the lack of obvious air to air intercepts. Also I saw some very odd things like 1000 Kg bombs from Stuka's which seems a tad off, since my memory is that they had 1 250 Kg and 4 50 Kg bomb per plane. Ah well, anyway I recomend everyone do this to get a better feel for the combat.

The overall situation is still damned grim. The movement of the Pz south (both from AG Mittel and AG Sud) was unwelcomed. People may argue that the decision to send the panzers south was wrong but at least in the game here it is a damn good one. SW Front is in danger but I am confident the mud will hit before they could be enveloped. Still they could go straight east and hit the line near Byansk which would also be bad.

Production continues to move eastward. Most of the eastern Ukraine factories are moved, so it is just Kharkov and the stuff around Rostov that remains.

I hope I can attrit down the Finnish Air Force over the next few weeks.

No Soviet night fighters are involved. The bombing missions are done by level bombers flying night airbase attacks. I do have my NBAB (U2VS) doing air strikes at night as well but these are largely only harrassment missions.

I have several dedicated night bombing air bases (all groups set for night attack). I use as much as possible older planes (TB3, SB2, DB3B) for this.

I just figured out yesterday that I could set a lot of bomber units to night missions;  I was confused by the markings of aircraft types in the commander's report.

The twidly range of the U2VS makes them a bit hard to handle.

Yes the Commanders Report is a bit of beast to get used to. Has lots of information you just need to sort out how to find it...plus read it since the font is so small but it has loads of good stuff in it.

I just use the U2VS from forward air bases. It isn't really like it is an issue if they get bombed or shot down since you build them by the gross load. I have 3 NBAP groups per base and fly all of them on a single target. It isn't wonderful damage but they are pretty unskilled so I'm ok with it.

2/10/41 STAVKA

The prayers for an early start of the seasonal rains continues unabated throughout Russia. The situation on all fronts remains grim. Comrade Stalin rewards the 48th Army Commander Stepan Akimov with a promotion to the rank of General-Polkovnik so it seems there is true to war time promotions being fast. He also refrained from any further changes to the VVS command structure. The Western Allies have begun to send equipment in addition to the SPAM. It is not clear how the British tanks compare to ours but more tanks is good news.

Leningrad/Northwest Front

The situation remains largely stable with the 11th Army pulled back for the most part to start digging in and the skirming continueing west of Novogrod. The Luga line was breached but the enemy was not able to penetrate the area befor our troops drove off the weak bridgehead. The 2nd Guards have fallen back to allow the 142nd Rifle Div supported by the 80th NKVD Rgt to take over front line duties.

The Finnish air bases were attacked again with both day and night raids. So far 2 weeks in there is no obvious decline in Finnish air strength but the VVS is hopefull that with more practice our bombers will find their hidden planes on the ground.

22nd/31st Armies

The situation is more or less stablilizing. The enemy is slowly making some progress but fresh reseve divisions have reached the line from the far east and these two divisions have take up a strong point in the line. The enemy divisions are showing signs that they are starting to run out of supplies so keeping control of the rail line is now more critical then ever. The 27th Cavalry Divison exploited a gap in the enemy line and moved into his rear area and has cut off the 3/221 Sec Rgt and 162nd Infantrie Division from supplies.

Kalinin Front

Renamed from the Reserve Front to the Kalinin Front it has been active the past week. The woods north of Vyazma are re-occupied while the 29th Army drives off a lone security regiment. It had been hoped that this would allow the cavalry to sweep into the enemies rear areas but it wasn't possible still the enemy must again fight for the same ground. Sapper and mortar bn are added to each othe fortified areas in Vyazma and Rhzev.

Western Front

The enemy pushes west with a full infantry Corps. For a few days it was hoped that by driving away the lone security regiment it would be possible to envelope the Corps but after the 1/281st Rgt refused to budge the whole plan was called off as too risky, but strong blocking forces have moved into place to try and slow the invaders advance down.

Bryansk Front

This week was largely quiet as the enemy advanced to the Desna Line.

Southwest Front

This front was extremely active this week. The enemy mounted strong attacks agains the positions of the 29th Army displacing its divisions. As maintaining control of the high ground south of Kiev is critical to the 12th Army's flank protection the 29th launched a counter attack against the 1st Hun. Cavalry Bde with the 99th and 140th Rifle divisions. It was a fierce fight with the enemy inflicting serious casulties to the advancing troops but the divisions remained firm and eventually closed the gap. Seeing this the enemy withdrew. On the other side of the river the 12th Army's 139th and 164th Rifle divisons had been driven back by an attack of a full Panzer Corps (9th, 13th, and 14th Panzer Divisions) supported by massed level bomber attacks. The ground was occupied by the 8th Rumanian Cavalry Bde and so the 164th Rifle supported by the nearby 87th Rife and 94th Mnt Divisions mounted a strong counter attack that drove the invader back inflicting nearly 25% casulties on the Bde. These two actions re-secure the 12th Army's northern flank.

In the centre the enemy mounted strong attacks agains the positions of the 60th Mnt Division and 4th AT Bde and ground held by the 39th Tank Division and the 96th and 192nd Mnt Divisions driving our brave soldiers backward. The Hitlerite invaders then sent their Italian lacky's ahead of them and our weary divisons launched an unsucessful bid to retake the ground from the 52 Torino Infantry Division and the 3rd Princ. Arm. Celere Cavalry Division. The 58th, 60th and 192nd Mountain divisions well supported by artillery assaulted the enemy forces and were cut down in waves by machine gun and mortar fire. The enemy mounted a counter attack with his tanks and cut off the lead elements which were then destroyed by artillery fire. The three divisions suffered over 10% casualties in the failed attack.

The situation remains dangerous for the the 12th Army position west of the Dnepr river. The 16th Army has taken up blockig positions and garrisions Cherkassy while the 19th Army has moved from its position on the east bank of the Dnper to the rough ground west of the river stretching the line to Kirovograd.

Southern Front

The line on Bug was breached just south of the 12th Army's position. The enemy used the 14th Pz division, plus 24th, 57th, 296th Infantry and the 14th Rumanian Infantry divisions to attack the 186 Rifle division's positions. They were sucessful in establishing a bridge head and the 11th Panzer division and 6th Rumanian Cavalry Bde crossed over to exploit. Driving off the retreating 186th Rifle division gave the southern front forces the delay necessary to mount a counter attack. Using all available forces and calling in all mechanized reserves General-Leytenant A. Eremenko's 51st Army tank forces comprised of the 48th, 69th and 131st Tank Bdes, plus the 2nd Cavalry division supported by the nearby 18th Army infantry of the 176th and 206th Rifles and the 6th Airborne Bde of the 3rd Airborne Corps struck back. The fighting was fierce and accurate long range artillery cut down the advancing cavalry while anti-tank guns disabled 23 T26's and destroyed several more but the enemy's fire bounced off the thick armour of the T34's and KV1's sweeping towards the panzers. The airborne Bde, better termed tank-borne for this battle spearheaded the attack on the Rumanian's and punched through their lines assaulting their positions at close range and routing them from their position opening the flank of the panzers. Sapper squads covered by smoke screens managed to close with the enemy armour and used flamethrowers to destroy 13 enemy tanks (3 StG III, 5 Pz IIIh, and 5 Pz IIc). Under pressure the Panzer troops withdrew across the bug lossing 30 tanks, nearly a third of their intial strength in the process. The 11th Tank division advanced to hold the ground. The troops were estatic at such a major victory and a liberal Vodka ration has been disperersed.

What the enemy will do is on the minds off all commanders but at least the Bug line is re-established.

VVS

The last few weeks have seen an appaling trend towards higher fighter losses. Including more Mig 3's lost then produced. This is unsustainable in the long run but for the last few weeks of good weather the losses will have to be accepted. Night air attacks on enemy air bases continue and a stead loss in enemy enemy air frames is noted. The NBAP bombers continue to harrass the enemy by the night. The long range bomber forces will be pulled back for a rest once the rainy season hits to allow their IL4 groups to recover.

Production

The T60 starting up is a major relief. New Medium tanks from the allies and more planes are also a nice addition.

Player Notes:

That was a brutal turn. Watching the attack on both the Hungarians and the Italians was nail biting. You really see the effectiveness of mortars and machine guns. The attack on the Italians was just a nightmare...I could just see the losses mounting and mounting, mostly from artillery fire and machine guns. The attack on the Pz division was a deserperation move. And it carried through. Seeing those tanks getting hit with flame throwers though...just wow. My first wargame was Squad Leader and I remember how effective the flamethrower was against tanks. That was just wow. I figure most of the victory comes from the T34s and KV1's none of which were knocked out in the attack while the T26s were even damaged by AA machinegun fire. I can't wait for the T60 and T70 which at least are not rolling death traps of that order.

The air war is harder to say. I'm loosing lots of planes but then so it the axis side. I just don't like that the Mig losses are so high, but I'm not sure how much is from combat and how much from training.

Lastly GIVE ME MUD!!

Enjoy.

I think the U2 pilots throw grenades at the Germans, they can't carry much else.

I figure they drop bottles of flaming vodka. I must admit they don't hit very well at the moment but I figure they have some effect on the supply state regardless. But there is a world of difference in my air power and the german. I had a tank division get interdicted twice...over 2000 men lost just from that, plus tanks and artillery. Also my commitment is very spotty, and when it does commit I often only get a few planes.

Yes, the results of air attacks are lousy; it seems like 10% of the planes show up.  I'm not sure if that's from the idea of getting lost at night, or the suckiness of the Soviet air units.

I'd have to reread the manual if air attacks on a fighting unit drop the supplies; i'm sure that each attack hurts by 1 morale point, even a pinprick attack by 2 planes.

On map I see their supply level decrease one step, it was why I was doing it even when it otherwise did no damage. The problem is that you have to fly all your night bombers from one air base at one target otherwise you risk loosing the commitment of the others due to them getting the 1% effect. Still seems sensible to use the planes in their intended role.

Soviet planes commit rarely, and when they do it is often in piddly numbers. I am not sure what controls it, I think it is the Air Commander's Initiative Value. What I really don't know is if I use player directed air strikes does that reduce the chance that the planes will commit to battle? I may go back to using my Su2's in player directed strikes as I hate seeing them sitting on the ground.

I just made a Li2 TAP set to night flying and when it is trained up more (50% exp) I will send it to a VVS base for deep partisan resupply missions.

I've started flying my night bombing attacks with one unit at a time; it can give me multiple attacks on the same stack, which should hurt one morale point each time. [:)]

The downside is that two or three planes may not hurt anything, while 30 may take care of 40 or 50 men and a few arty pieces.

13/11/41 STAVKA ((Take 2 as I stupidly clicked on the X...lost 40 min of writing))

The last weeks have been largely filled with staff work. The unseasonably early snowfall in the middle of October had a disasterous effect on our lines but the next weeks were filled with the seasonal rains that destroyed the enemies ability to advance and gained us considerable time to refit and train our forces for the coming freeze. Comrade Stalin refrained from any more dramatic gestures towards Air Generals but still there was a single dismissal as General-Leytenant Fyodor Remezov is sent into a retirement dacca near Novosibersk and General-Leytenant Maks Reiter takes command of Bryansk Front.

The following officers have had their service to the Motherland rewarded, in the order they were recieved:
18th Army commander Andrei Smirnov is promoted to General-Polkovnik.
26th Army commander Fyodor Kostenko is promoted to General-Polkovnik.
9th Army commander Iosif Khorun is promoted to General-Leytenant.
22nd Army commander Vladimir Vostrukhov is promoted to General-Leytenant.
49th Army commander Ivan Zakharkin is promoted to General-Polkovnik.
Southwestern Front commander Mikhail Kirponos is promoted to General-Armii.

Unfortunately some of our colegues have been lost on the field of battle. Or maybe not, truthfully no one knows how Marshall Grigory Kulik was killed as the 54th Army was in the Cacassaus M.D. at the time, but through the rumor storm General-Leytenant Maksim Antonyuk takes command of 54th Army and we wish him all the best. In a more straight forward case 23rd Army commander Pyotr Pshennikov has been killed in action while conducting an inspection of the front lines by Finnish artillery and General-Mayor Rodion Malinovsky takes command of 23rd Army. As Malinovsky is an able commander the chances of the Finns breaking the lines north of Leningrad seem substantially decreased. It has been a bad time to be in the north it seems and Northern Fleet Air Command commander Aleksandr Kuznetsov has been killed in action when he decided to fly one of the U2VS night strikes himself. General-Mayor Sergei Khudyakov takes over command of Northern Fleet Air Command.

The removal of the old style Tank division and replacing it with the new Tank brigade has resulted in, at least production wise, improvements. Our tank forces are now filled out with T34's and our production is capable of rebuilding 5 brigades a week in medium and heavy tanks. The slimming down of the light tank component and the introduction of the T60 will also help. It remains to see how the brigades perform in serious combat.

The emphisis has been on preperation for the winter offensive the enemy is sure to unleash when the ground freezes to allow his armour to advance. Brigades have been refitted to near full strength and trained up then advanced to the front. Replacing burnt out divisions with fresh one has occured over the fronts as well as was possible. Tank brigades have been largely concentrated in rear areas training and filling out. The fronts are stable but the fact that virtually none of them have true reserve formations is telling. Training in the rear areas is ongoing and these forces will be available in mid winter.

Leningrad and Northwestern Fronts

The freak freeze in mid October was a disaster for the 27th Army holding the Luga line. The 261st Infantrie division was able to force its way across the river. The frozen ground hampered efforts to muster strong reinforcements for the counter attack. The 125th, 183rd and 191st Rifle divisons supported by the 46th Tank and 3rd Rifle brigades made an attempt to drive back the weakened (CV:4) 261st division but failed taking heavy (nearly 10%) casaulties. STAVKA released reserves and they have been taken up position around the bridgehead. The Narva Fortified Region (21st F.R.) supporting the 126th and 181st Rifle divisions has stood off enemy assaults and has had a sapper Bn plus an AA Bn attached to the FR itself. The 8th Army has also been reinforced with both units from the 11th Army plus new forces released by STAVKA. The 11th Army is currently engaged in engineering operations in the rear and is the designated front reserve.

In good news the 67th Rifle and 22nd NKVD divisions were rescued by sea lift from Kusserare to Orienanbaum. The 67th has joined the 27th Armies line, unfortunately too late to assist in the critcal counter-attack at the Luga. The 22nd is conducting engineering activities in Orienanbaum. This front is one of the few which is not overloaded by troops.

The 23rd Army is holding the line at Vyborg. It's new commander is currently moving troops around to give them some much needed rest and relaxation as several have been worn down by the constant low level skirmishing. STAVKA released a rifle brigade plus a single division to this Army but that has allowed for this. The situation looks stable here an with the 7th Army. In what has been jokingly refered to as the Finnish battle school the 142nd Rifle division of the 7th Army (Ind) earns the honor (and special Vodka delievery complements of Comrade Stalin) of being now called the 3rd Guards Rifle division. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Guards have been recalled by STAVKA for the newly formed 1st Shock Army, and three strong replacement divisons have been sent north. This leaves the 7th Army (Ind) with 5 Rifle divisions, a Light Rifle and Naval Rifle brigade and three NKVD border regiments plus two reinforced Fortified Regions. The 7th Army HQ has been recruiting localy to form a ski battalion as well.

The 28th Army is holding the line near Novogord. It's troops recaptured the rail line west of Novogrod from a security regiment that had been sent to occupy the ground just before the rains began. This piece of ground has exchanged hands several times and an attack there is anticipated. The 48th Army is supporting the 31st Army operations. Both of these Armies will be handed over to the Volkhov Front when it forms next week. The 55th Army (STAVKA) will be added to the Leningrad front, this army is currently the Leningrad Garrison.

The air war with the Finns has been going tolerably well, but they are resisting strongly. Our bombers are keeping their strongest airfield under day and night constant bombardment while the I-153s and I-16s duel in the air above it. So far the losses are relatively even which favors our side. Still the fact that we have not really damaged them after several weeks is dissapointing.

22nd/31st/54th Armies (STAVKA)

These forces are trying to contain a strong Hitlerite infantry force near Dymansk. The 31st will switch over to the Volkhov Front next week which may relieve some of its logistic issues. Local ski training has been ongoing as ski battalions are being formed. A small trickle of reinforcement has arrived and 2 more mountain cavalry divisions are on the way to reinforce the area.

The 22nd managed to recover some lost ground before the mud hit and frankly most people believe that is why the commander was both promoted and not shot. The 22nd and 54th armies have exchanged divisions while additional reinforcements have been released from STAVKA to strengthen the 22nd.

The 54th is responsible for garrisioning Kalinin and the cities near it. It has been slowly been built up with reinforcements from STAVKA over the last three weeks.

13/11/41 STAVKA (continued)

Kalinin Front

The front lines have been relatively stable after the two rifle divisions were rescued from entrapment. Limited maneuvering has occured and the enemy ahs lauched several attacks, largely unsucessful. The 34th Army stood off an attack on the 262nd Rifle divisions supported by the 122nd Tank Bde by the 7th Pz and the 18th Inf(M) divisions supported by 41 Ju 87(B&D), 27 Ju 88A, and 34 He 111 H-4's. The tank brigades T26s were all largely damaged or destroyed (14 lost) while the T34 and KV1 tanks were only damaged mostly due to mobility hits. Removal of the T26 from our line of battle can't come too soon, given its vulurability to even anti-tank rifle fire. The enemies tank losses (5) were largely from close assaults with flame throwers, a disconerting fact.

The 49th Army faced weeks of stress as the enemies 263 Inf, 5 Jäger, and 20th Inf(M) divisions assaulted the area marking the transition to the 4th Army of the Western front. The 31st, 35th and 54th Cavalry divison stood off several assaults during this time. The casualties in the battles were horrendous as the divisions manuevered through the woods. The 31st and 54th Cavalry divisions were returned to the STAVKA reserve in exchange for the 44th and 56th Rifle brigades, which have the same fire power with less command and control footprint.

The men of the front brace for a renewed offensive once the mud freezes.

The Western Front

The amazing news of this week was the awarding of the coveted Guard pins to the the 1st Rifle Divison and (name unknown) Division making them the 4th and 5th Guards divisions. STAVKA has requested they be sent back to the Moscow area for the use of the 1st Shock Army and fresh replacement divisions are ready to replace them on the line. Additionally 2 divisions which were routed and then never seemed to recover were finally re-organized when they were assigned to General-Mayor A. Zhadov's 4th Airborne Corps. We will not ask how this was accomplished but the return of the 283rd Rifle and 29th Cavalry to active status is most welcome. The 4th Airborne Corps has been detached to STAVKA central reserve for use in conjuction with the 1st Shock Army and a divison and brigade were sent to replace them with the 13th Army line near Bryansk.

Overall the Front needs to loose more combat formations to reduce the command stress it's CO's staff are facing. Fresh replacement divisons and brigades are now in place to transfer with divisons that have been in combat since the start of the invasion. The 190th Rifle is conducting advanced training near Kaluga still and it is now the strongest division in the front.

The efforts of the 137 Infantrie division are to praised, if it had not launched a series of foolhardy and vastly unsuccessful attacks on the 1st and (x) Rifle divisions position they would not have achieved their Guards pins. It is interesting to note that replacement divisons were moving up as both those divisons were seriously depleted (42% and 34% TOE).

Bryansk Front

The front has been largely stable with the major news the command shake up which seens General-Leytenant M. Riter take commad. This is welcome news as he is a competent officer and this is critical posting. The command staff are somewhat overwhelmed at the moment and efforts to reduce this would be welcomed.

The 50th Army holds Bryansk. The garission has been reinforced and is now the 271st and 331st Rifle divisions supported by the 19th Rifle Bde. South of the 50th Army is the 38th Army (STAVKA) which has been probed twice now by Panzer divisions each attack point has been reinforced with newly raised naval infantry brigades. The 37th Army (Bryansk Front) is in reserve behind the 38th Army. The 3rd, 21st and 32nd Armies hold the Desna river nearly to Kiev. The 5th Cavalry Corps (SW Front) and the 2nd Airborne Corps (Kharkov M.D.) are in reserve for them.

Due to enemy attack on one of the fronts air bases the 1st PVO AA Bde was formed near Kursk and is still working up toward being fit to deploy.

Behind the Bryansk Front near Saratov the 61st Army and a large number of fresh divisons and brigades are training and refitting.
