Good ideas. I want bigger galaxy.

Good ideas. I want bigger galaxy.
And you will need a bigger processor to go with it.
RE: Slider Suggestions for New Game Screen
I'm not sure about this, but making the map bigger while having the same amount of stars shouldn't affect the performance very much.

As said just bigger map not more stars. More space between stars, more distance. Currently its like space faring races are living together in same apartment. There is so little space between them.ORIGINAL: ASHBERY76ORIGINAL: Zakhal

Well the Hyperdrive speed slider would pretty much have exactly the same effect as that, only there wouldn't be a visible increase in the distance, and we know for sure it wouldn't affect performance either.
By the way in the game options screen there is a star density slider, anyone know what it does? I haven't played with it because I don't know what it does and there is no reset to default button.

...Igniting stellar cores....Recharging reactors...Recalibrating hyperdrives....
RE: Slider Suggestions for New Game Screen
Yep the problem is not the galaxy visual size, after all we have 1000+ stars, but the fact that any early tech ship can warp through half of it in a few game days.... We need much higher fuel consumption and much slower hyperspace (and even normal space) speeds!
This would also make all the fuel/engines techs more useful, currently I don t see their point...

The star density slider simply gives you more stars in the background (in this case more little white and grey dots). Turn it all the way down, as well as the nebula slider, for better performance.

Just removing the background nebulaes in system view gave me a huge performance boost. Recommended for everybody with older rigs.

I think the "Get rid of fuel" thread would probably be revived shortly if this were to happen lol
I will say, I think non-hyperspace speeds are fine as they are, if not abit slow at times
But hyperspace... yea needs slowing down in the beginning, but I wouldn't be against it being even faster by the end
So basically bigger gaps between the slowest and fastest drives

RE: Slider Suggestions for New Game Screen
Yes, all very good ideas, to be sure... But I believe we can already alter the hyperdrive speed, if we tweak to our liking the Startup.ini file in DW: ROTS:
'Distant Worlds startup settings
'screenwidth 1280
'screenheight 800
'hyperdrivespeed 1.0 (game default is set to 1.6)
It seems to work, although I haven't tested this extensively. The original DW does not have such a file, but I have added it from the ROTS installation, and so far it also seems to work...[;)]

RE: Slider Suggestions for New Game Screen
Hey all, I remembered something I forgot to mention that is totally valid to this thread, and I think has been brought up a few times in the past by myself and others.
When you choose the quality of your starting system and set it to low, it ends up a sort of an odd one out system, where all other systems are plentiful in resources compared to your home system.
Resource Abundance Slider
The Resource Abundance Slider basically is the same as the home system slider, but it only affects all systems which players do not start in. I have said before that resources are too abundant making securing all of them (except the rares) very easy during the early game. A Resource Abundance Slider would be a great addition to the list of sliders mentioned in the first post. Since RotS its got slightly harder to secure all resources since you can turn down the habitable planets (which also have certain types of resources), however, overall they are still a bit too abundant for my liking. Settings could be Rare, Scarce, Normal (Current), Common and Abundant. This would make the game slower and more difficult, or faster and easier depending on your own preference (I'd choose Rare or Scarce always). [:D]

The resource slider thing sounds really great.
I'd really like one that controls homeworld population, much like the current homeworld quality setting except it would affect the entire galaxy. Would make for some interesting low econ games, probably.

Woodman, what slider do i use with the BETA patch to DECREASE the number of habitable planets? I LOVE 1400 star systems but I would like to decrease by 50% the number of planets that I can colonize throughout the galaxy. I would like to see like 1 or 2 planets that are 'habitable' every 10 star systems, but dont know if this is possible.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Set the colony abundance slider to to lowest. Should be the top slider IIRC.

Has anyone else tried this?
RE: Slider Suggestions for New Game Screen
I didn't but since ROTS appeared I'm no longer on the vanilla anyway

I think he was reffering to ROTS
RE: Slider Suggestions for New Game Screen
ahh, thought you were asking about the Startup.ini from ROTS being added to the vanilla
i haven't played with the Startup.ini in ROTS either but I seem to recall another thread where this was discussed and changing the hyperdrivespeed at least is a bit trickier than it seems
