AV 0 INF - what are they good for?

Post by berto »

From the thread:

AV 0 INF -- what are they good for?

(I am not speaking of AA, ART, CD, ENG, HQ, etc.; rather ordinary infantry units, with no special function. I am speaking of INF that are specified as AV 0, not AV 1+ INF that were reduced to 0 by previous combat.)

I assume they would be good for reconnaissance (?), interdicting supply (?), and garrison duty (?). (I suppose they might share their own-unit supply with other units, too.) In a non-combat role, anything else?

But my main question: In combat, alongside other infantry units with AV 1+, and alongside the other specialized LCUs, how exactly would they factor into combat?

Bonus question: If an AV 0 INF unit encounters one or more enemy AV 0 units in the same hex (whether INF, or any other type), can the AV 0 unit initiate combat in any way? To give a specific example: What if a stack of four AV 0 INF units encounter a single enemy HQ or CD unit in a hex. What could those four units do to the lone enemy unit?

JWE has created INF with AV 0 in his DEI scenario (PA units, maybe also some others). Maybe I should follow up in the Scenario Design forum, DEI scenario thread.
^ What he said. [;)]

Somebody already answered that AV 0 units are next to useless for garrisoning.

About those AV 0 PA units: my wife's Uncle Vic (PA trooper, Bataan Death March survivor) would be none too pleased. Just sayin'.

Something happened, I don't know what, but a block of devices ended up with 0 anti-soft (can't contribute to AV). Fixing it now. Boy, some things got totally hosed !! Think I know why, will try and make sure it doesn't happen again.

[ed] in the meantime, unzip and use the attached wpd030.dat file. Should work a lot better. Checked and all Inf LCUs have an assault value. Woof!!

I'll try and get the entire 'fixed' version up on the website today. Ciao. J

DBB DEI Scen030 is up on the website. No instructions or other text yet, but the 'fixed' files are there.

Just to explain: there are several squad type "Devices" that have a low anti-soft, so they don't contribute to an LCU's AV. These are mostly Engineers, labor, Stevedores, etc.. and intended. So certain engineering LCUs will have 0 AV.

Believe what berto is refering to is that certain "Infantry" LCUs had 0 AV. This was the result of a colossal screw up in a data transfer operation where a block of about 30 or so "Infantry Squad" Devices (and some other stuff) ended up with 0 anti-soft, making them unable to contribute to AV (or even shoot back!!) and thus making their LCUs have an AV of 0.

Two slightly different, but related, conditions. The first is WAD, the second is WOOF (but fixed).
