Then we definately need to get together for a beer or three. How about a "Charlottesville summit?" [&:] Any good ideas for places? I'll nominate the "Horse and hound". Anybody else interested? [:)]

I will mention the nearby Wild Wing Cafe as it is a personal favorite and a reminder of our mutual opponent Chickenboy. [:)]

But I'll cheerfully go with the Horsey Hounds.

That's the one near the Barracks road shopping center? Just down from the UVA law school? That works for me.

The one at Barracks Road is Buffalo Wild Wings. Wild Wing Cafe is next to the Amtrak train station on Main Street.
April 2, 1945. The USS Henrico, supporting the invasion of Okinawa, is struck by a Francis operating as a Kamikaze, killing 51. Among the wounded was the father of this poster.

Is The Virginian still across the street from the rotunda?

I haven't been to C-ville in 25 years, so the places I remember may not still exist - but this is Virginia we are talking about, a state which resists change!

I was there four years ago, and I think the Virginian is gone. The Corner looked very different than I remembered. Don't recall there being a Poe's anymore, and every place seemed to be serving bean sprouts.

OTOH, the White Spot was still cranking out Gusburgers, although the hunchbacked guy wasn't making the fries anymore.

Wow... no Poe's either? This is sad...

Yeah. Their "Three longnecks for a buck" promotion was a key attraction on non-fraternity nights. A cheap date destination as it were.

We ate in a bar/restaurant about where Poe's should have been, so I think the space is still in use, but the name is diferent, and the menu was very "California girl chic" versus the grease.

I was a huge devotee of the White Spot (I liked to watch the Med Schoolers and the residents on 100-hour shifts try to stay awake during their 15 minute Gusburger breaks.) It was the place to go after the frat parties ended at 0200. A Gus and fries before bed and it was possible to be up and studying by 1000. I was young, once.

I'm pretty sure the Virginian is still there, I went to it a year ago. Maybe a different one , or it moved to a different location. Here is the link to it's site. Maybe you can tell if it's the same one. http://www.virginianrestaurant.com/thevirginian/

I'll be hornswoggled! That's the place where we ate four years ago. I thought it had changed its name. We sat in a booth about midway.

In college I only went in there once, didn't eat. It was the HQ of a lot of post-hippie-era LSD-using, Asleep at the Wheel-listening 7-year-plan undergrads. Poe's was a couple of doors down, a bar more than a restaurant, and I went there when I wasn't drinking at the frat house. I remember The Virginian as being more bar than restaurant, but it's definitely the latter these days.

Thanks for the link. Good memories.

Thanks, Steve... that's the same one, in the same location it has occupied forever. You have restored my faith in the Old Dominion.

Hi all,
Interesting to hear that quite a few witp players are in Charlottesville or visiting. Could people tell more about their link to C'ville or its university ? I was a graduate student there 20 years ago (GSEAS) and go back occasionally, for consulting or as visitor. I am now in Europe with a faculty position in the field of... AI, games and simulation (!)

Bullwinkle, we would have been classmates if my parents hadn't have moved from Richmond to Atlanta when I was still in high school (dad's office was relocated - it wasn't a voluntary move), so instead of going to UVA I ended up at UGA. While still in high school I used to take weekend trips up to C-ville (with the dream of attending Mr Jefferson's university).

It was a pretty good class. Katie Couric was a year ahead, but we had some nice girls too! [:)]

I fell into UVA by accident. Since 4th grade I had planned to go to Annapolis. Took three years of NJROTC in HS, did all the extra-currics, took all the math and science my pretty lousy HS offered. Couldn't stop my eyes from going over the myopia limits (+/- 5.0 diopters corrected to 20/20.) Tried waivers, letters to both senators and congressman, eye exercises, even a laying-on-of-hands (and I'm not a believer.) Nothing. Got a presidential nomination due to dad, but no appointment.

How naive were we in the 1970s? I had no back-up school. It was late Feb. when I got the last "stop bothering us" letter from the USNA. My folks said to suck it up and apply SOMEWHERE. My bro was at Old Dominion and living at home, and I could see that wasn't for me. So one night I did an all-nighter, filled out the forms, wrote the essays in longhand, and shot the app in to the U. I had no idea it was one of the best public universities in the nation. I was utterly clueless (parents didn't go to college, and our guidance dept was busy with pregnancies and drop-outs, not college-bound kids.)

I got in and showed up and realized that what I had done was extraordinarily dangerous. My HS class had 730 kids in it; four got into UVA. Other Va Beach HSes put in 50-75 kids. To further show how little I knew, the first week a girl asked me what I was going to major in, and I said I was going to be a lawyer. She snorted and walked away. I did not know that was not an option. I didn't even know what graduate school was. Ah, those innocent pre-Internet days of yore!

One of my HS classmates received a basketball scholarship to The University, but he flunked out before he reached the varsity team. He had been a good boy in HSk, but had way too much fun in C-ville.

That's pretty easy to do. [:)]

But for the good will of a visiting Probability professor (I didn't know there was a final grade called "D--" but I got one) I would have flunked out first year. I escaped, didn't go on probation, and graduated with honors three years later. (That story got me at least two jobs. Four-oh-all-the-way is boring and for pre-meds only.)

I work in Washington, DC, next to the Navy Yard.

There are several good watering holes nearby on 8th street (S.E.) across from the Marine Barracks. I'd be delighted to hoist a beer or three with a fellow Forumite (or forumites).

As luck would have it, I'm staying at the Courtyard Navy Yard. [:)]
