C'mon, Matrix... how about a WiTP 2?

WITP2? Surely there's a market for it. Can it be done profitably and without deal-killing legal entanglements? Not so sure.
After waiting on the sidelines for years then finally taking the plunge last year, and after seeing for myself that this is perhaps the greatest PC war game ever -- assuming a WITP2 meets and even exceeds the high standards of quality set in WITP:AE, any sequel for me would be a no-brainer, must-have, automatic buy. At virtually any price point.

Compared to what WITP is, AE already is a WITP 1.99
I agreed with Castor, so why don't we all play AE for at-least five years, before we think about AE-2.

Yeah. As much as I'd like a new and updated witp with a modern UI I think we need to accept that they would probably want the current players of AE to get a few campaigns under their belts before they have to worry about changing games.

I'm not disagreeing, but I'm pretty sure someone thought the same about Steel Panthers.
I remember this forum used to have 30-50 people constantly online when Witp was released, and then the same when AE was released. Nowadays it has less. I'd agree completely if a WITP 2 is to be driven by Mr "G"'s big money, but if the idea is to tap on the user community, then probably it's a good idea to do that while the user community is engaged, and not let people disband and vanish just like those Soviet rifle divisions in WitE.

I love AE...an AE2 on a new engine ..... drool.... if not I'm happy with this one.

considering the amount matrix takes off the top of every sale, price vs volume imo sucks. A modernized version of WITP with UI upgrades would sell well at a lower price point.
RE: C'mon, Matrix... how about a WiTP 2?
So long as michaelm continues to patch the current game, and stays responsive to user requests, that should keep us happy. Not to mention all the modder activity. Ongoing improvements to WITP:AE make waiting for the real WITP2 so much easier to endure.ORIGINAL: DivePac88

If they started on WITP2 today it wouldn't be finished by then. Best case AE will be well over five years old before any successor could be finished. WITP had about that long a run before AE.
Hey, maybe Matrix has a "Stargate program" and has already put together the team. Let's start a rumor . . . [:)]

Hello
Some people forget that WiTP arose from Uncommen Valor (UV). And I think (did not know) that even parts of the code from BTR slipt in UV.

12 O'Clock High aka Bombing the Reich, Gary Grigsby's Talonsoft game on the European air war. Now available as Matrix's Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich.
A classic.

Hello
Sorry...my mistake BTR = Bombing the Reich
This is a new version of it:

When you have the old game you can find in the data Japanese airplanes. I think that aspects which where develop in BTR in influence or even slip in UV.

I'm not sure I understand the concern over patent rights if someone designs a new game based on the war in the Pacific from scratch. How many games were designed around the Battle of the Bulge?
The main reason I would like to see a new game would be the use of a more modern windows based engine.
Also something like tracker integrated into the game.
So we players have to make a pact that when one of us hits the big lottery we will set aside a million dollars or so to get the show on the road. (is a million enough?)
Welcome to my fantasy world.
Back to reality, the next thing I'm hopeful for is the search arcs to be reworked to run properly.

Search arcs are apparently now working well in the current beta patches under test. The most recent can be found in the Tech Support sub forum.

The question of patent/copyright rights comes in to play when we start to talk about how much of another program is being used or even completely repackaged without the approval of the previous copyright holder's premission. A perfect example is the discussion between Microprose who published Falcon 4 and the Lead Pursit/Graphsim Entertainment when these folks tried to initally released Falcon 4:Allied Force. The case was settled out of court years ago, but basically the folks that were left over from Microprose wanted a piece of the pie from thier hard work basically being repacked by Graphsim with some free mods (along with a couple of the mod designers who released it for free) who was attempting to re-release F4 with these free mods for a price on the public market. It took a while in court, but basically Lead Pursit, negogiated the right to purchase the license and cut a small piece of the pie to a few of the mods they used. This has been a growing trend in the modding community in gaming software. It slowly started with MS Flight Sim and then progressed to games like Half-Life, MMO's, war games; where people have on thier own modified the game to do something like have star wars units in a game like Sudden Strike. It is getting to the point that some gaming companies are using thier lawyers to shut down mods or outright buy them and then cutting the mod designers out of the process. It is dirty business, but some of the companies are trying to protect thier own licenses or prevent getting sued by some other entity (like George "I am Darth Lucas" Lucas over Star Wars stuff that haven't been authorized by himself) or as in the case of some flight and war game simulations have to buy license rights from Boeing, Lockheed, Chevy because they want to include the B-17/P-38/DUKW just to even feature photographic representation of the platform in a game. Heck, some model companies overseas are having to pay license fees to some European aircraft companies for the right to make models of thier aircraft to sell to hobbist.
So yes, you are correct there are a billion and a half games around Gettysburg, Bulge, Midway, Verdun, etc; but it gets complicated when you start to talk about the mechanics, metrics, art, and even something asine as the lettering script.
Take my word for it. You never want to be involved in an “International Incident”.
RE: C'mon, Matrix... how about a WiTP 2?
Since so many here seem to want compete 100% historical accuracy, I have an idea.
Why not just design a game that has two dice and a results table?
Here is the manual:
Roll the dice.
Anything but snake eyes = Japan surenders after getting nuked twice. Industry is smashed. Navy non-existent.
Snake eyes = Japan surrenders after getting nuked once. Industry is smashed. Navy non-existent.
Always near-historical results, simple, inexpensive, and no debugging. Charge $80 bucks for it and you're off!

Occasionally, and randomly, problems and solutions collide. The probability of these collisions is inversely related to the number of committees working on the solutions. -- Me.

cool, do you think the replay bug will be fixed in it?
and will thee be a zero bonus??

RE: C'mon, Matrix... how about a WiTP 2?
I guess if I saw my hard work being co-opted by somebody else I would not take kindly to it, and I would very much like any new game to closely resemble WitP so working with the original owners would be inevitable.
