Northwest
Units on the Velikaya withdraw northeast in anticipation of an enemy attack next week, hinged on Pskov. The line is so weak, I fear it would take little to break the hinge.

Defending a dangerous bulge, the Sorot-Sinyaya-Dvina line, the 11th and 22nd Armies also retire towards Velikie Luki. Hopefully these armies, considerably reinforced, can redeploy on the Valdai Hills and behind the upper Dvina.

The link between the southern units and our Western Front and other central commands is shaky, but there are hopefully enough swamps, rivers and petrol shortages among the Germans to prevent an immediate breakthrough.

Still no Dnepr crossing, guess it’s the mud. North of Smolensk, mixed units if 29th and 24th Armies form a line to screen fort building further east. Behind the Dnepr, units of the Orel MD start to move south, Western Front filling their positions. Slowly the Dnepr position is taking shape, but I do not intend to fight anything out here. The river will slow exploitation of the inevitable breakthrough but I’m already looking over my shoulder to a line Bolva-Vyazma-Rzhev-Volga. Here, units of Moscow MD and the newly formed Reserve Front, are digging busily.

Much to my surprise a few more units make it out of the Pripyat region. Orel Military District troops man the Dnepr line in front of Gomel.

This Front is in full retreat towards the line forming behind the Dnepr. I feel the compulsion to try to keep open an escape route from the Pripyat, but really I know this is very probably a mistake. I will lose more in the long run. In any case, while I’m too weak to hold the line west of Korosten, the mud does not allow me an effective withdrawal.

I fully expect to lose pretty well everything west of my prepared defences. I’ll be relieved if I can evacuate all Kiev’s industry next week.

Southern Front
This week saw one of those horrible panzer drives, this one headed southeast in the direction of Odessa. My previously pristine Southern front has suffered a few encirclements and its right flank remains badly exposed.

Galitsky and Vatutin take command of the two corps retreated into the Odessa forts. Hopefully their high morale will rally the many broken units under command and they will together repulse the first onslaught on the port, if it is launched next week.

Air
There are now about 2000 aircraft, mostly fighters, out on the air fields. They are concentrated at Leningrad, Moscow and in the Crimea. The bomber force remains in bad shape.

Recce units arrive in the Southern and Southwest Front VVS bases, giving fairly good coverage of the front now.

Production
Krivoi Rog, Nikoleav and more vehicle factories from Leningrad are evacuated this week. Kremenchug also waves goodbye to its 2 armaments factories, but railcap limits mean the heavy industry must stay.

APs were boosted this week by the formation of the Reserve Front. This enabled the replacement of many poor Army commanders and the Reserve Front commander, also the formation and distribution of Army support. I’m aiming to equip each army with a minimum 2 Artillery units, one each sapper and PVO AA regiment, a RR Repair and a couple of construction battalions. Little by little I’m also disbanding AA and sapper battalions. I’m keeping the motorcycle SUs in STAVKA reserve. I know many players disband them but I find them useful enough.

Turn 5

Leningrad
Thankfully, the Finnish attack is an orderly affair and does not upset my withdrawal. 23rd Army falls back on Leningrad while 7th Independent Army holds its line at Sortovala. This army will need reinforcement, however.

29th Army on the western Luga defences has a coherent, fortified line now, with a little depth too. The Axis armoured formation facing it in Estonia is at around 30 MP supply path and has sought to supplement supplies with an airdrop. If Flam wants to, I’m sure he can make a mess of 29th Army in a week, but Leningrad is secure from a coup de main.

I’ve sent 30th Army HQ north now, under Zhukov’s command. This is taking over the regional armoured units as well as infantry, and will occupy the hills around Krasogvarddeysk, digging, and counter attacking if an opportunity presents itself.

Suprisingly to me, I am able to withdraw the entire Front to a line manning the southern section of the Luga line- Novgorod-Staraya Russa- Velikie Luki. I would prefer to leave all of the Luga defences to Northern Front, but that’s an organisational point I may be able to put right shortly.

This is where things have got a bit messy. Two attacks over the Dnepr have trashed my line. The southern attack, in the Mogilev sector, is broad and quite deep.

With a tentative connection to Northwest Front, units of the Moscow Military District man defences on the upper Dnepr, east of Smolensk. One corps of 24th Army takes up blocking positions around the Mezha, to slow down any move between the Dvina and the Dnepr, towards Rzhev. Meanwhile, Reserve Front continues to form and dig in Rzhev- Vyazma, while extending both north and south along river lines to inhibit early outflanking manoeuvres.

Western Front’s 20th Army holds onto Smolensk but falls back to the Sozh from its former positions west of the city. On its left, 13rd Army sacrifices one division near Orsha, to clear out a small enemy bridgehead over the Dnepr which infantry following the enemy tanks might use for a time saving crossing point. The rest of the army falls back to and behind Krichev. Next are the intertwined 4th Airborne Corps and 4th Army, elements of the latter actually being strung out between Propoisk on the Sozh, through Gomel and to Rakitno in the Pripyat region.

A rabble of Orel Military District divisions form a southern flank for the central region. Their displacement would compromise the Kiev position in one go. Worryingly, Flam has flown some heavy supply missions to the tank formations forming up here. Which direction will they strike?

Necessarily, a new line of shell units is forming at Bryansk.

A significant problem is the Western Front’s army commanders lack of ability in handling armour. I’m reluctant to sack good infantry commanders, some of whom also have good initiative and admin ratings, but as in the Northern front sector, I’m now looking to establish one tank heavy army with an appropriate commander.

Southwest
The command structure has somewhat dissolved here, with divisions formerly subordinated to corps now under Front command. 12th Army, under Eremenko, takes over a good number of divisions in front of Kiev, infantry and mechanised, given his good ratings in both departments.

In front of Kiev, I make my first attacks on the German motorised spearheads. Units newly assigned to 12th Army cut off 10. Panzer and 10. mot. Infantry Divisions. Attacks on the latter follow, firstly with units from Kiev’s outer defences. These divisions of Orel Military District’s 21st Army push the Germans back with losses, but two follow up attacks by 12th Army and Southern front’s 16th Army are moderately costly failures. Those attackers that are able then withdraw back into the city's outer fortification ring. I’d be very surprised if Kiev fell next week, and any half hearted attempt on the city could well meet with a concerted counter attack.

The three divisions of 26th Army, boosted with a couple of forming divisions, move north to the Chernigov area to prepare defences against any breakthrough and southern move by AGC.

From Kiev to south of Zaporozhye, there is now an unbroken line of divisions behind the Dnepr. In Kremenchug, however, as in a few stretches, the divisions are terribly weak.

Southern Front
Clearly the corps in Odessa disbanded before they could rally their broken divisions. That being so, the Germans were able to attack from the east, and, after being rebuffed twice, then walk into the city behind its northward facing defenders. These are now cut off without hope of relief. Looking on the bright side, this will bring 9th Army within its command capacity without use of APs. There’s always a silver lining.

After cutting off advanced German units at Kirovograd and Novomirgorod, the rest of 9th Army fans out behind the Ingul, with a screen between the right flank of this line and Krivoi Rog. This city is lightly held.

Behind the 9th, 3rd Airborne Corps and the newly forming Coastal Army, prepare defences near the mouth of the Dnepr.

Air
Just a few Kbf units added to Baltic Fleet bases. It appears interceptors brought down several enemy planes during their turn.

Production
Most of the Armaments and a heavy industry unit are moved from Dnepropetrovsk. Kremenchug evacuates its heavy industry and Zaporozhye its heavy industry. One arms factory moves from Kiev.

The entire T-50 factory is lifted out of Leningrad.

Turn 6

Flam is taking the quantitative approach to attacking which is giving me a decent proportion of ‘hold’ results. This leaves me already, with several divisions with 5 victories.

Organisation is going well, and Northwest Front particularly, is helped by the space it is given to sort itself out and redeploy. Only the Orel MD is widely dispersed now, and I hope shortly to relieve its units on the Dnepr bend with elements of Southern and Southwestern Fronts.

Leningrad
7th Independent Army pulls back behind the Syamozero leaving two divisions to screen its left.

23rd Army completes its withdrawal into the Leningrad perimeter and establishes defences of all immediate approaches to Leningrad.

29th Army had been mauled and the Luga line comprehensively breeched from the west. The army can still screen the main fortified line in front of Leningrad for a week, using hills and swamps to slow enemy movement. Behind them, with five tank, two motorised and four infantry divisions, Zhukov’s 30th Army keeps digging and readying to defend the line, from the Baltic near Oranienbaum, to the Oredezh swamps.

Northwest Front’s 8th Army garrisons the unbreeched section of the Luga line to Novgorod.

All these armies now have at least two artillery supports as well as sapper and AA regiments and construction units.

Northwest
South of Lake Ilmen, 27th Army digs in behind the Polist and behind it, the Pola. The position is strong if only sufficient troops can be found to man it. The Germans look a fair distance away.

With a thirty mile gap near Kholm, the week began with 5th Airborne Corps, then 11th Army continuing the line. The excellent Rodion Malinovsky takes over the latter along with three motorised divisions from Front command. 5th Airborne pulls back to line up with the 27th, leaving 11th Army needing to evacuate Velikie Luki. I like the position but the risk of a hook to the north is too great. Next stop, the Valdai Hills. 11th pulls back north-eastwards, leaving a rear guard to protect stragglers around Toropets. 22nd Army, with only three divisions under central command in the line, links the Front to the units of Moscow Military district, now facing west at Olenino in front of Rzhev.

Centre
Moscow Military district now has its two armies dug in behind the upper Dnepr from Molodoy Tud to Dorogobuzh. The enemy will have to apply some force to break this line and I hope to buy enough time here to permit the further strengthening and extension of Reserve Front’s positions directly behind. The northern most of the latter’s 31st Army end the week in contact with an NKVD regiment of Northwest Front’s 11th Army. The upper Volga, extending North from Rzhev, now provides continuity to the solid defensive wall facing AGC.

With the loss of Smolensk, Western Front now falls back to the Besed-upper Desna as a prelude to falling back on Bryansk. The Front has a clearly defined army structure now, 20th, 13th, 10th and 4th Airborne, running north to south, the 13th covering the gap between rivers at Roslavl. 3rd Army, meanwhile, reconstitutes from new shell divisions behind the Bolva-Desna and in Bryansk itself.

Elements of Orel MD in the area are now concentrated around Gomel. 43rd Army is assigned to this district command and moves up to Zrob on the Desna. The Gomel units will be reassigned to it next week.

Southwest
Contact is re-established with various units isolated in the Pripyat marshes. This will doubtless be temporary as none of these are able to move definitively out of danger.

Elements of 6th and 26th Armies consolidate their positions near Chernigov, east of the Desna while elements of various armies struggle to escape the swamps.

12th Army, along with Orel MD’s 21st Army consolidate in front of Kiev. Elements of the latter seize the moment to bash 2nd Hungarian Mobile Brigade, then withdraw into their defences. All the same, I’m counting on losing the industry remaining in Kiev next week, along with a substantial amount of these two armies.

Orel MD’s 19th and 32nd Armies are now established behind the Dnepr. 19th is well dug in, but 32nd has yet to dig, really. Elements of the latter are also on the western side of the river screening Zaporozhye where 4 HI centres still await evacuation.

Southern Front’s 16th Army, which found it’s way into the Kiev perimeter, now starts to make its way south to join the rest of its Front.
