I'm gonna put in my two pennies here. As much as I love war-games, and I do love them, a big pain is clunky interfaces. War-games=click fest. Been that way since the 80s.

Not all. Just finished playing a run through of "Hofen Ho-Down" in BfTB, and I doubt I used more than 150 orders in total for the 3 1/4 day battle (the vast majority as fire support missions) - major formation orders - something around 8-10 assaults, with some additional adjustment of HQ and artillery support locations... I can't say for sure, as I wasn't actually counting (or fighting the interface) but was concentrating on time and space problems for my pixeltruppen.

What is tabletop gaming like in present times? Are there any interesting mechanics in games that you play?

I've found the whole FTF boardgaming culture to be in a nice renaissance from when I left it back in the mid 1980's.

The "euro" style games have filled a nice niche for casual players and even some more instense thinkers can get a decent challenge. Two of this type that come to mind are "Le Havre" and "Power Grid".

The wargaming side of it has really changed. Now hand cards have become more integrated and dice are less common. A really good example is the new "Combat Commander" series.

History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.

How are cards usually used in wargames?

Does any of these board wargames attempt to simulate command & control?

Thinking about this thread, I went to a table top gaming store and found that there are still groups that play my favorite table game, Starfleet Battles. Lots of Warhammer too.
After 16 years, Civ II still has me in it's clutches LOL!!!

There's only one tabletop wargaming store in my city and it sells exclusively Warhammer/Warhammer 40,000. It's quite weird talking in account that AFAIK Warhammer is one of the most expensive games to play..

I wanted to get into WHFB several years ago, I even bought a Chaos armybook and a box of Chaos Warriors but the miniatures turned out to be bad quality with poor proportions. I could have several boxes of high quality, well proportioned historical miniatures for that price.
Thus I got disillusioned and lost interest in Warhammer.

There used to be a store with more reasonably priced games with better miniatures like Infinity, Hordes and Warmachine and Flames of War but one day they completely moved to Magic the Gathering.

Hey, newsflash to all the complainers: software developers don't owe you a damn thing. It's business.

Quit whining and don't buy it.[8|]

And yet you invariably whine about Paradox titles........

I consider Warhammer to be the modern equivalent of D&D. Lots of young people get into it. Maybe more like axis and allies. Somewhere in there.

Ever been to the one on Clairemont Mesa, right next to the 805 ? Generally Warhammer is all I see in there. Some other FRP types as well.

I wonder why it's so popular, though. It's one of the most expensive systems. Judging by what I've seen in the store that later moved to MtG, other systems can be equally popular if given a chance.

Still, the store that later turned entirely to MtG was full of Warmachine and Hordes players, so I think that the less cool systems can be popular too when given a chance.

SFB was played at our gaming club last month. One of the guys is a big fan of SFB. We get together on the second Saturday of every month at the bowling alley on base. The club founder is a former marine. A few of the other guys are either former or active. Plus a bunch of us nerds. We typically get around 8 or so people to show. Sometimes less sometimes more.

Sure, I can do that but then the game makers will whine that they are going out of business because we won't buy their crap-ware. You ever complain about bad movies or are you just always spineless and take everything up the rear?
