DW: Legends. Who is going to buy shortly after release?
RE: DW: Legends. Who is going to buy shortly after release?
For matrix I think the download link expires, but you get a new one if you contact support.
If you buy a game over a network like Steam, the game is tied to your account. As long as steam don't go belly up it should be safe. At least as long as you are able to recover your username, password, security question, credit card... some of that stuff..
As for PC crash. If a PC crashes, I doubt DW is the only thing to worry about. Get a backup. Or two. I have a lazy backup method in storing stuff on a NAS running Raid 1. Mixed with DW on two different computers, and the possibility for a new download link, I feel somewhat safe. At least compared to having the game on a single computer, and on a DVD that is just waiting to be scratched

If I get a digital copy (i never buy them), will I be able to redownload it for unlimited time, or is there a time limit?
Just in case my PC crashes or something like that.
IIRC Matrix will let you re-download as needed.
Still I like having both the digital for immediate and the physical in case of disaster.

I definitely plan on getting it the moment it's available for purchase on the Matrix store. [8D]

Digital download as soon as feasible.

I bought RotS when it first came out (about 1 year ago) and a couple of days ago I visited the members area of the matrix website. I accidently requested a new download link somehow because shortly afterwards I received an email with a download link for RotS, not sure what I did, but this shows how easy it is to redownload your game if you have a HD failure or something, I did it by accident a year after buying!

I will wait a bit myself.
If it's mostly bug-free and the changes are of the sorts that I'm expecting, I'll definitely buy it.

Exactly as the MD said.
By the way is there a gifting option on purchase? Might be roping in a relative for Xmas.

If you are to give it away and use the digital download you could buy and download all install files. Store the product keys in a text file, and add them all to a cheap (or expensive) memory stick and give that one away.

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall seeing a "buy as gift" option in the Matrix store last time I bought something there.

Are you gonna buy DW Legends at release?
I will buy the Digital Download version.
Ditto.

The info I have is that you need Distant Worlds plus Return of the Shakturi to install Legends on top.
I hear Distant Worlds may be packaged with ROTS for the new buyers. Perhaps Matrix can elaborate.
It would be an "epic fail" if they didn't offer a DW+RotS+Legends at a deep discount. They should be trying to expand their customer base, not simply selling to those that are already on the hook.

I have a friend waiting for the trilogy, I've recommended the game to him for about a year now and he still hasn't tried it yet. He is worried about the cost of buying the game + 2 addons, we need a trilogy set!!!

I know I'm not objective on this but if I like a game this much and can afford it than I'd like to support the developers to provide....more fun for me in the end [:)]
A trilogy set is normal....but deep discount and epic fail? I wouldn't go that far.

Ditto. If I was a billionaire, I wouldn't set up a Cancer fund, I'd set up a 4x Space Game fund.[8D]

[Picard] Noble senitment, Commander Data [/Picard]
The difficulty is that people who have not yet played DW cannot know how much they like a game. A fact compounded by there being many so-so (at best) games going around. A big name game can usually get away with charging a premium (but they just as often fail to deliver) but DW would not fit into that category (yet). The reality is that the best support for the long term viability of DW is in expanding its customer base... lets just hope that it does not come with comprising the quality of the game and hence the fun of people like you and me. Given the way it has progressed thus far a reasonable discount and sustainable growth are indicated.

Combined price of DW + RotS + Legends will place it over the price of most market offerings. That will dissuade a lot of potential customers.
Without a discount to bring that price to a more acceptable (for the new customer) price, Matrix is only really marketing to its established customer base.
That, in my books, is "epic fail".

I'll get both. Just like DW and ROTS. Digital to utlize. The box for cleaning the dust of and kissing where appropriate.

This genre doesn't tend to lend itself to market expansion anyway. Word of Mouth is the only way this game will spread, and the type of gamer that buys Space 4x games consistently (or any grand strategy game, since I think Paradox fans would enjoy this too) is also the kind of gamer that buys all the ones that look good, regardless of price. Even if they have to wait until the discount.
