Battle Plans

Here are the battle plans for the Celebes Sea. We have a good chance of engaging the carrier TF near Force Z, and an outside chance of engaging both sKBs.

Miri is an active Imperial anti-shipping air base. All bomber units with range and pilots that won't fly into the ground from fatigue have been tasked to hit the airfield.

Singkawang will fall either tomorrow or the day after. CAs Cornwall and Exeter and CLs Enterprise, Glasgow, and Caledon will make Batavia tomorrow. Unless conditions prohibit it, they will form the core of a Bombardment TF that will hit Singkawang as soon as it is in the Empire's hands. The down side is that while the Sulu Sea and Celebes sea has seen heavy cruisers as the IJN's largest surface combatant, there are man battleships and battle cruisers seen screening the several synchronous invasions of Borneo and Malaya.

This last along with the impending conquest of Kuching and Singkawang make Operation Singapore Sling - the flinging of substantial ground forces from Singapore to Palembang by sea - no more than a dream. The transports that have been held back at Singapore for this purpose will therefore breakout tonight through the Straits of Malacca. Singora and Kota Bharu are believed to have no Imperial bombers present, so ships might get one day of graceful sailing before the onslaught begins.

As there is still no fresh information at all on KB's whereabouts, we must ponder whether they made a high speed sprint out from under search cover during that bad weather, and are now looking for prey.

1941 December 13

A wild turn - I only have the replay so I don't know how much damage was done to CL Marblehead CA Houston by aerial torpedoes, nor many other details. A powerful IJN battleship force interdicted Force D, which would surely have found CVL Ryujo's TF. Then, however, it might not have been able to handle the IJN heavy cruiser escorts.

Amphibious landing continued or started at:
Mersing
Kuching
Brunei

Lost to the Empire:
Camiguin
Mersing
Victoria Point
Wake Island
Namatanai
San Fernando

Curiously:
"Japanese Unit(s) Wiped Out at Singkawang by attrition!!!"

Kuching saw a small victory as the attacking force stumbled badly.
Ground combat at Kuching (58,88)

The battles at sea raged on several fronts and included some victories. There were the expected summary sinkings of fleeing vessels, from the sea and both under it and above it. The Allies struck back in the same fashions against the invaders.

IJN CL/DD and DD TFs hit the USN DD TF and both the PT and MTB groups causing havoc.

That wayward invasion convoy in the Celebes evaded Force D when the escorts IJN lookouts (fed carrots and blindfolded since they were embryos) spotted the Allied warships in time to change course. Force D then promptly ran into a no-doubt alerted powerful enemy force, and was lucky to get away with no fires burning.

The mines laid at Mersing were constantly found, but one at Kuching found an xAKL victim. Mine sweeper Penguin, ex-Guam, ran into a light SCTF south of Wake Island and sent her last radio message. S-40 stopped AV Kunikawa Maru from scouting operation Exodus with a cleanly placed torpedo. DDs Scout and Thanet in daylight found themselves 23,000yds from CVL Ryujo, 3 x CA, and 6 x DD and were powerless to do anything about it. Clear across the map CA Canberra and CL Perth found the ships that must have landed troops on Shortlands yesterday and cautioned them about trespassing, with a few warning shots.

The air games began. Zero sweeps are methodically murdering the Allied air forces over Luzon, but there is a cost with some Zeros claimed (who knows the truth?) and unescorted raids hurt. The British and their Commonwealth friends made attacks count at Mersing, only finding the warships more difficult to hit. There were many, here are only the results seen to the IJN.

Amid the mayhem Mersing's minefield finally scored on DD Asashio. RAAF Hudsons pressed through a Claude swarm to bomb Ryujo, but missed. Nells were thwarted by DD Pillsbury's smoke screen, or was that a real fire? There were several attacks on Force Y, shown together in brief form.

SS Shark was hit badly near Laoag and must be in tough shape. Many ASW attacks still being conducted daily around Pearl Harbor as the DDs of the Pacific Fleet learn a vital part of their trade. A CA in company of unknown other ships was attacked by air near Palembang - interdiction or invasion? No sign of KB for now.

Screen pics and any pertinent details later when I have the actual turn file.

Quite a mess of action there. You're definitely making it a bit hard for the Empire. If he's bringing in 4 BBs with a 3 DD guard it seems time to flood the area with any and every sub available.

Did you sink or damage some of the landing ships at Singkawang enough to have killed of the combat squads leaving only support?

Not that I know of. Certainly not this last turn. Maybe those ships hit a couple of turns ago a few hexes away in the open ocean? But I seem to recall too few casualties for the effect noted, unless they went down later. A minor mystery.

Not sure I'd want Cap'n Man(w)nering in charge of Force D - to add insult to their combat worthiness.

You're giving conniptions to Admiral Wa - no doubt. With the small magazine of torps on the CVLs you can certainly persuade the racing DDs from chasing the Philippine navy. Nells at Brunei another story though.

Naval 62, Aggression 52. I figured he was good enough without wasting points, and I really don't want someone so aggressive the whole force goes kaput too quickly.

I do still have Phillips in place. With poor leadership and heavy aggression he's likely to slam into that 4 x BB TF at ramming speed. Of course based on seeing our 2x2 I would like to knock down some IJN BBs before those beastly Yamatos start roaming around. Yikes!

1941 December 14

Stricken CA Houston and her escort, DD Whipple, were caught and dispatched by battleships. KB remains elusive.

Amphibious landings continued at Kuching and were seen offshore at Baler. The Empire captured:
Hong Kong
Batangas
Naga
Brunei
Calayan

IJN surface forces continued to sow havoc among Exodus. The bright spot is that CA Kumano was torpedoed by a Swordfish near Palembang. EHQ clearly doesn't know that Palembang is devoid of ships, having been fished out by the previous raiders. Miri airfield was also hit, but cost two Dutch planes and two British. One Sally was destroyed on the ground and the airfield damaged. B-17s did most of the damage. Allied forces retreating from Kota Bharu were caught up and pushed back again.

It seems that most of the ships that broke out of Singapore two days ago through the Straits of Malacca did so undetected. Only one convoy was attacked, the slowest comprised of xAKLs, one of which was hit. A few coastal mine sweepers and motor launches remain in harbor making the largest wakes they can when Imperial recon over-flies.

Saratoga has been spotted making for Pearl Harbor a day out from the east, while Lexington is unseen about two or three days out northwest on a course to evade sub contacts.

Force C is unspotted and will be on station in the Makassar Strait tonight. Perhaps in anticipation or more likely to rearm, the IJN raiders seem to all be withdrawing out of the Celebes Sea.

Only one more B-17 remains to be pulled out of Manila. Miri will be a target again tomorrow. The weather might better, allowing the torpedo planes at Singapore a better shot at the warships at Mersing and near Palembang. Here is a look at Luzon.

Saratoga was engaged by an IJN sub when approaching Pearl Harbor. She is unhurt but so much for opsec. The waters of Hawaii are swarming with Japanese steel sharks. Amphibious operations occurred at
Jolo
Lubang
Baler
Kuantan

The Empire seized
Alor Star
Baler
Tuguegarao

The Dutch continue to perform well at sea. O16 sank xAK Iwaki Maru with a single torpedo near Kuching. Speaking of which, the invaders at Kuching are being blasted by the defenders' artillery.
Ground combat at Kuching (58,88)

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 1055 troops, 2 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault Value = 34

Defending force 956 troops, 6 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 16

Japanese ground losses:
148 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 10 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
Sarawak Force
2/15 Punjab Battalion
106th RN Base Force

Defending units:
I/81st Naval Guard Unit
III/81st Naval Guard Unit
A small but definite monkey wrench in the Empire's timetable.

By all rights the Imperial warships at Mersing should be in task force with Davey Jones, but for all the hard pressed attacks by experienced air crew the end of the day saw only this result:
CA Atago, Torpedo hits 1
Too many attackers were lost. Arrivals are +/- 15 days, and today 8 badly needed USN destroyers arrived at Balboa. Still no whiff of KB. It does look as though DAW has given orders for a land campaign against the vast waste land of NW China. Here is a look at Malaya, showing the Imperial effort to cut of retreating forces. Notice that EHQ's efforts against Kuching and Singkawang have come up short, buying time. The remaining British bases on the South China Sea have been swiftly overwhelmed.

CL Caledon will be missed because I-159 didn't miss her at all. Four times. The remainder of Force C will attack the landings at Jolo tonight. DD Pillsbury fell to flooding. Amphibious operations occurred at
Jolo
Lubang

The Empire captured
Calapan
Digos
Kudat
Jolo
Lubang
Kuantan

CL Kashii went in alone near Singapore and dispatched several of the small craft that were serving as cover for the larger vessels that have retreated through the Malacca Straits. Finally a Vildebeest put a torpedo into her side, although several aircraft were lost to CAP and flak in the process. Imperial submarines continue to prowl the waters of Hawaii, but at least they are taking some hits. Lexington & Co. made it home safely. Blenheim I bombers of RAF No. 60 squadron operating out of Moulmein scored the first Allied strategic bombing hits of the war by achieving 5 Heavy Industry hits on Bangkok. Imperial DD size ships are near Oosthaven evading our attempts to drop destruction on them from the air. Force D, which just made Soerabaja, will reposition to Batavia to deal with them.

DAW's submarine force does appear to be carrier hunting!

There were no Imperial amphibious operations today.

The Empire captured:
Lucena
Cabanatuan
Lingayen

The waters of Hawaii continue to be the cat and mouse grounds of frantic ASW. The waters off western Java saw additional invaders in the form of cruisers while the DD group remained on station at Merak. And suddenly the ocean south of Mindanao to east of the Spice Islands is alive with Imperial convoys. Force C came up dry at Jolo, but on the way back to Kendari ran into suitable targets. The running gunfight cost one RN destroyer and likely an IJN DD as well.

While Dutch, British, and Australian pilots made numerous attacks on Imperial warships in the South China Sea, the Celebes Sea and the Java Sea, it was once again the deadly Vildebeests that did the damage. A composite:
CA Chokai, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
CL Isuzu, Torpedo hits 1
CL Isuzu, Torpedo hits 3, and is sunk
Imperial return attacks all missed, as did their submarines. In spite of advances the Empire faced some setbacks on the ground in China. They could use some slowing down! Here is a look at the (unclear) situation bearing down on the Spice Islands.

1941 December 18

The Empire captured:
Polillo
Taiping

There were no amphibious operations.

Imperial sweeps over Luzon destroyed some of the few remaining Allied fighters. IJN subs and aircraft continued to hunt refugees, but found few this day. The Cruiser force in the Java Sea is withdrawing toward the South China Sea. The DD force (now spotted as including a CA) is 200nm NE of Soerabaja. Heavy weather has protected them from air attacks. Force C is going back to Soerabaja to rearm (from Kendari) and has plenty of ammo to intercept. Force Z and Force Y are pulling back to Kendari. It seems clear that the two sKBs are hanging back and waiting for a surface force to sally. Meanwhile the location of KB itself is still undiscovered.

Soerabaja is repairing Allied DDs as fast as possible. The destroyers and cruisers of Force C need work, if things are quiet enough when they make port the worst off will go into repair. CL Marblehead is two days out and needs temporary flotation repairs. The first 4 USA dive bombers are at Makassar, but the saying about the proverbial bull's butt and a base fiddle applies.

Forgot to mention - Clark is over-stacked! I've also been frantically avoiding over-stacking in countryside hexes in China. So the 4th Marines are moving to Bataan, as I might need the base after all. When Manila falls the overcrowding at Clark will be of crisis proportions. The only saving grace is that maybe the Empire will feel the same sting.

The Empire captured:
Chengchow
Shortlands

There were amphibious operations at:
Kuching

The ASW war, which I sincerely hope is training my DD crews, continues fiercely around Hawaii. That Imperial surface group found a few small victims in the Makassar Straits as it made for more friendly waters. It consists of
CL Naka
DD Natsugumo
DD Minegumo
DD Asagumo
DD Yudachi
DD Samidare
They seem to be employing some kind of shielding technology to deflect bombs away from them. GGHQ wanted to ask Sergey about it but he is in the other AAR. Sweeps over Luzon took several more defenders. Imperial bombers commenced bombing of Bataan, which joined Clark on the waiting list for alien anti-bomb shielding technology.

In a stunning development sure to change the outcome of the war:
Wirraway Scores Bomb Hit!!!
Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Groot Natoena at 57,84

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid spotted at 6 NM, estimated altitude 4,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 2 minutes

Allied aircraft

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
xAK Eihuku Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x Wirraway bombing from 1000 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 100 lb GP Bomb
The IJA 114th Infantry Regiment was mauled trying to dislodge the Australian defenders keeping the door to Singapore open for their brothers to the north.
Ground combat at Johore Bahru (50,83)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 4069 troops, 47 guns, 17 vehicles, Assault Value = 127

Defending force 2791 troops, 44 guns, 1 vehicles, Assault Value = 79

Japanese adjusted assault: 40

Allied adjusted defense: 155

Nice job getting a CA this early!

Wirraway's the perfect design :) Jack of all trades, excellent fighter and bomber! Oz is now safe!

Cheers

Following along as well. [8D]

Wish you were playing the Japanese side though. To echo jrcar, getting a CA this early is an early coup. Nicely done.

1941 December 20

The Empire captured:
Catbalogan

The Allies captured:
Chengchow

There were Imperial amphibious operations at:
Beaufort
Singkawang
Finschhafen

There were Allied amphibious operations at:
(Laugh it up, JFBs! The clock is ticking...)

KB - or at least part of it - has appeared in the Bismark Sea and sent a raid against shipping at Port Moresby. The only vessels present were two mine sweepers on ASW duty and they suffered the full attention of the strike. xAK Eihuku Maru ran into a mine at Singkawang, taking fires and heavy damage. The good news for her: "1 mine cleared". The defenders of Kuching held by the skin of their teeth. With the casualties they took it will certainly be the last time. B company, New Guinea Rifles, needs two more days to make Salamaua so they can be airlifted to Port Moresby.

Drifting in over several days between the Moluccas and Celebes have been these IJN TFs, shrouded under heavy rain. Probably at least one of them is an ASW group, but the others remain mysterious. Force Z and Force Y are at Kendari with React range=6. The three CLs have been transferred to Force Y, and two DDs to Force Z. So present force composition is Force Z: 1 x BB 1 x BC 6 x DD; and Force Y: 4 x CL 6 x DD.

Back at Soerabaja, CA Cornwall has its front main batteries down and will be escorted out of sub infested waters so she can make her way elsewhere for repairs. CL Marblehead is still making temporary flotation repairs before doing likewise. Other warships are repairing in various modes. Three more CLs and a DE are about to make Batavia and will move on to Soerabaja to form up with repairing ships.
