RE: 1942 Strategy

I've moved on from this campaign... it was meant as a teaser to show the level of decisions that need to be made in the game. But to give it a decent burial I'll tell you what happened in the end.

After the fall of Odessa and the death of dozens of Axis units in the resulting pocket, the USSR fixed its eyes firmly on Berlin and marched westwards in the northern sectors while the southern front was allowed to stagnate roughly on the line of the Carpathian mountains. Zhukov's armor broke through the Seelowe Heights and was two hexes away from Berlin when an Axis counteroffensive came thundering north out of Crakow and actually cut off the tip off my spear (c. six high value units cut off). I stabilized the front fairly easily and eventually took Berlin and turning off FoW showed that there was not much left of the German Army. I could have continued to grind forwards to eventual victory but I figured there were more valuable lessons to be learned by switching sides and trying the war from the German side.

So I started a 1939 GC as the Germans (see "France First" AAR) but discovered I couldn't declare war on Belgium and Holland so I stopped that AAR. When the patch comes out in the next week or three I'll try another AAR.

Greyshaft, why didn't you sent me the save game, so I can fix it for you, and you would be able to continue the game?

Thanks for the offer but there's in the end I just ignored Belgium/Holland and their ongoing neutral presence didn't stop me conquering France and Britain. In Jan 1943 my Panzers have now taken Astrakhan/Maikop/Stalingrad/Moscow/Vorozneh/Leningrad/Murmansk and are preparing for the final offensive on the Bolsheviks.

In retrospect I don't see the need to attack Belgium/Holland since Germany can easily breach the Maginot line and conquer France via Metz. I trust that Maginot Forts will be more difficult after the patch.

I didn't read this AAR before, but I think there is a real problem with German AI... I hope it will be corrected, if not the only challenge will be : taking Berlin in 1942 or 1943 ? [:)]

Now where have I read that before...?
