The Germans break-through west of Paris. I attack a Garrison at the neck of the bulge but, despite throwing three Infantry, an aircraft and an Artillery at the enemy unit, he easily survives…

Britain

The British Artillery is damaged to halve its strength and the 2nd and 3rd Armies are likely to be cut-off in northern France. Looks like the end game here…

Serbia

No attacks in Serbia this turn. I repair a Garrison and continue to wait.

Russia

With the French front disintegrating I continue to push forward with my Russian troops. I am hoping sheer weight of numbers will tell here.

Once again no less than four Infantry units and an aircraft attack the exposed German Infantry…result? Barely a scratch….

The French are almost out.

Turn 20 – 4th March 1915

Serbia

Skopje falls and all I can do is move my remaining units to receive half supply from Tirana.

Russia

My last remaining hope of saving the game is in the east. I cannot get the odds required so all I can do is try and use superior numbers to surround the enemy. At Lemburg, 4th, 5th and 6th Armies attack the Austrian Garrison along with two Vinnytsia Garrisons and an artillery. Once again, despite sheer weight of fire-power I cannot dislodge the Garrison….

In the north, four Garrisons try a desperate assault on the German Garrison south of Koenigsberg. Not a single hit is recorded against the German unit.

Finally, in desperation I throw away my Russian Battlefleet against a German Cruiser….

I place a Garrison south of Brest-Litovsk.

Turn 20 – 4th March 1915 (Cont)

Britain

The RN get a small success in the Channel, reducing a submarine to a 5-strength but frankly its all too late. The French will be destroyed in a few turns….

I place an Infantry at Southampton and a sub off London.

France

The British and French could not pinch out the salient west of Paris and with no means of reinforcement, its just a matter of time…

I Garrison Orleans and Lyon.

Turn 21 – 1st April 1915

Serbia

Three units left. I move a Garrison as far south as I can to annoy the Austrians…but that’s it.

Russia

At last! The Lemberg Garrison falls to an all-out attack!! However, real further progress is denied. I manage to destroy a German Infantry east of Warsaw, but fail to achieve the same result against the Infantry army two hexes north.

In the Caucasus the 8th Infantry attack Erzurum without success.

I repair what I can and place a Garrison northwest of Brest-Litovsk.

France

Five French units left. I place an Infantry in Orleans (designated 1st (Guards) Army to bolster morale)! The 2nd (Guards) Army is placed in Lyon, while my final reinforcement, the 1st (Guards) Cavalry Army is placed east of Nantes. On these troops (and their British comrades further north – see below)) the fate of the Republic – indeed the whole free world rests.

I can only repair units this turn.

The British intend to make a heroic fight-to-the-last-man stand at the base of the Cotentin Peninsula using 2nd and 3rd Armies.

The Garrison in Tirana is destroyed… two units left. Where the hell are the Italians??

I reduce a Turk Infantry to a 2-strength but have nothing to continue the attack with.

France

The British 1st (Guards) Army and 1st (Guards) Cavalry land to bolster Army Group Cotentin.
I build a Fighter, an Infantry and an Artillery.

A further two units destroyed…I continue to wait for the inevitable.

The attack, designed to relieve the pressure in France has ground to a halt. All units retreat east…

Serbia

Cetinje will fall next turn sadly.

Britain

The British Army Group Cotentin draw first blood, destroying an Infantry Army and mauling a couple of Garrisons, but the Germans have too many units following up. Good stand though boys.

I build an Infantry and hope I am still in the game in three turns….

France

The 2nd (Guards) Infantry forces a German Infantry to retreat but there is nothing I can do about my two Armies around Orleans from being surrounded.

Russia

The retreat has turned into a rout – nothing I can do about 1st and 2nd Armies being surrounded.

Turn 24 – 13th May 1915

Russia

The Russians manage to extricate one of the surrounded Infantry units, and damage a few more, but the CP look too strong in terms of Infantry Armies to be able to hold them off much longer.

France

The British and French Guards units continue to hurt the Germans, but there is just too many of them.

What you are doing here could be another Economy of force error. It may actually more cost effective to disband the Canadian garrison and build another corps where you need it. When you disband it you get half the construction cost back and don’t have to pay maintenance while they are crossing the Atlantic. If a corps is out of the game more than 3 turns it is always cheaper to disband and rebuild rather then paying for keeping it on the map. In this case you have to get the corps to a city, embark it and sail it cross the Atlantic – might not be cost effective.

Even as the Germans I frequently disband units if I don’t have the rail capacity to move them between fronts. It is rarely worth it to allow a unit to wait around for a train if you can re-build it where you need it. A good example is Bulgaria. If Serbia is defeated when Bulgaria enters you should immediately disbanded most of the Bulgarian army to save paying upkeep. They have a rail capacity of one so having more units on the map then they can rail is essentially a waste of money. Either bank it or build Bulgarian Research centers.

Since a corps takes a long time to build and you pay maintenance while it is building the calculus may work out to keep the Canadians but it is a close call. Here I would disband it and build another instead – will cost more but you get it to the front faster and speed is essential at this time.

Maybe for game balancing, maybe the costs to disband and rebuild should be tweaked so that such a move has a higher cost but we will choose in dire circumstances only.
