Scenarios

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

You can move mech units thru forests, but I would not recommend it because it would take you awhile. It is assumed that there are paths/service roads running thru the forests. The forest hexes are rated for density. You can check the density rating by calling up the mobility hindrance rating in the game. The AI normally sticks to roads/open terrain, but I have seen the AI move a mech unit thru wooded hexes to get to troublesome units.

RE: Scenarios

Post by Mad Russian »

The scenarios take place at all hours of the day night and in all levels of visibility.

The scenarios range from no infantry on a side to mostly infantry on a side.

There are those with no helicopters all the way to one that has a Soviet Assault Helicopter Regiment in it. Sometimes only one side has helicopters other times, both sides will.

There are some scenarios with limited or no Close Air Support (CAS) and others where both sides have it. Sometimes it stays for the entire battle. Other times it comes in and leaves during the scenario.

Different levels of experience and training are shown by the units involved. No single side in any of the scenarios all have the same experience and training levels. Each unit and often the formations within the unit are different.

Good Hunting.

While the equipment lists for several of the scenarios is similar the difference between them are the maps.

Each scenario has it's own map. The terrain is the defining factor in how you fight each battle. You should turn on the elevation tool before you set your forces up to see what the lay of the land is.

The forces for those described as "Best Played As:" are placed in a group on the edge of the map. They are not put in positions on the map for you. The forces you control have not been placed by me. They will be ready to be placed by you.

Here is the US setup in the American Campaign scenario as an example. The American Campaign also has some units that have been placed and locked into place. Those can't be moved. They are the units out in the setup zones to the right of the main force.

The engineering obstacles that you see cannot be repositioned by the player. Those are set by the scenario designer. There are some engineering assets that can be positioned. Such as FASCAM, artillery delivered mines, but these are limited in scope and you should think about where you fire those.

Good Hunting.

Many have said that this game has that 'one more turn feel' and I completely agree but the scenarios also have their own a 'one more try' feel. IMHO there's nothing like having 2 platoons of Abram's chugging across an open field on a foggy/rainy day,500m visibility and the weather clears; the previously unseen Hinds move in for the kill; scratch a bunch of Abrams and I know there's no high score this time.

The scenarios aren't easy to win. I had more than a year to work on them, not counting the playtesters trying them out and making recommendations.

They should prove tough to be beat in most cases.

The NATO scenarios got the lion's share of playtesting but I'm confident that the H2H and Soviet player based scenarios will hold their own as well.

I would have to say that while I enjoy all the scenarios my own personal favorite is CA1 Hunting Bears. That's the map I showed the setup zones for, (up a couple of posts in this thread.)

I know there's no high score this time.

I've set far more low scores in the game than high ones. But, I play the scenarios when they are first put together and are still unbalanced. I've taken some real nose bleeds given to me by this AI, before I learned to get the feel for the balance of forces in this game.

For those of you looking for the order the scenarios were created, you can find it here.

A1 - A8 in order are the US stand alone scenarios.
G1 - G3 in order are the West German stand alone scenarios.
B1-B4 in order are the British stand alone scenarios.

The first scenario in each set is a smaller one designed to give the gamer a smaller force to control to get used to that nationalities forces.

Just bought the game and will download on Sunday,as I am away from home. Are there any winter scenarios? Snow an ice impeding the armoured units, I remember my dad going out for exercises in the winter months. He was REME so he had lots of work getting the armour to run in the cold, breakdowns and accidents. He said the Russians wouldn't want to fight in winter either, but better to be prepared than sorry.

No winter maps or scenarios, yet. I wonder if someone is going to mod one.
I suppose we are going to have our hands full with the scenarios we have at the moment.

MR thanks for responding.

So where is the tutorial scenario? If there isnt one, where do you suggest one should start?

It's in the game. It's simply called Tutorial.

If you can't find that I recommend that you start with A Time To Dance.[8D]

I just played a Time to Dance as Blackhorse. Marginal victory -- called with 2+ hours left when the Russkiis exceeded 70% of losses. One minor comment: I wish there was an indication/marker/etc. that the units were bridging.

Great stuff.

There are indicators that a unit is bridging. It will have an E on the counter and the unit information window will tell you that it has bridging orders.

Thanks. But I don't get a unit info window for enemy units if I have browsing of enemy units off, right? Or are you talking about the popup when I hover over an enemy unit.

No, if you are playing with Fog of War on you won't get to view the enemy unit information. At the moment the AI won't blow a bridge. Only forces under your own command will and then only on your command.

If your forces get caught on the other side of the river they will bridge it and that can leave an opening for the AI that it will take. [:@]

I was talking about your own units with a "Blow Bridge" order.

RE: Scenarios

Post by Mad Russian »

The scenarios cover roughly the first week of the war. The game covers fighting from the Fulda Gap up to the North Sea.

Before I started creating the scenarios I had to create WW III. That was an interesting undertaking. If you consider, each scenario has 3 briefings, each of those is roughly one page in length, that means I wrote 45 pages of the history of WW III for the stand alone scenarios by themselves. The book will be coming out shortly! [:D]

The briefings are designed to give enough information to draw the player into the situation and give you a feel for what is happening around you. A, "Boots on the Ground" briefing.

As the NATO player that means you are at an organizational disadvantage.

Your units often arrive piecemeal, artillery arrives late, recon and engineering elements missing or only partially there, and the list of woes grows. There is no real way for me to create the amount of confusion that would reign in a Cold War environment. With a mixture of civilian panic and chemical attacks on key logistic facilities and airfields all over Europe there would be a stress level for NATO commanders hopefully few of us will ever understand.

I did the best I could. For the most part, I think the scenarios have the right feel to them. Welcome to my version of WW III.
