X Ribirth might have been attempting to be a Mass Effect clone. If that's the case, it failed so miserably that its hard to tell, almost as badly as it appears to have failed as an X game. What is it with Devs nowadays, with the exception of a few fringe games like Distant Worlds, they all seem to be churning out utter crap and derivative crap at that!
Yeah. I can't remember ever buying so few games in a calendar year ... or being so routinely amused reading about all the crappy ones. Luckily I can see a future filled with Galactic Civilisations 3, Star Citizen, Mass Effect 4 and hopefully Distant Worlds 2. With luck, I won't need anything else. In the meantime I keep going back to old titles.

The trouble is that the big AAA game companies are pushing quantity over quality. Remember back in the day when the graphics were horrid but the game lasted a long time and you could play it over and over and over?

Shogun Total War has that kind of interface for its strategy map.

And the X series, but looked what happene, when they went the whole hog and made it so you had to go and meet with "ministers"? It is very unpopular.

It's not a matter of quantity over quality as marketing over quality. Because marketing works. And quality is subjective.

Yes that's one good sign. There are so many promising looking space games lurking on the horizon at the moment that I'm hoping at least one or two of them will *have* to be good, just through law of averages.

After the X - Afterbirth disaster, I'm seriously thinking of trying out Eve Online in my search for a space trading / empire building game that isn't brain-dead. Has anyone had a good experience with Eve?

Eve is a very good MMO. I played it with friends from work (our own corp/guild). But Eve has some issues that keep turning me away. First if you are in a corp or larger faction, it seems you are at war very often. This tends to detract from the game for me as I would rather harvest, build, sell, etc. If you are at war it is easy to be blockaded on your starport or risk destruction.

It can be very time consuming to get yourself established and getting good equipment. The economy (like most MMOs) is out of whack. You need many credits to get things.

But overall I would suggest you give it a go (especially if you use their free trial) to see if you like it. I find the major battle videos on YouTube amazing.

Would it be easier to focus on non-combat stuff if you just avoid joining a corp and operate solo or is that just not practical?

I tried that, but it isn't as much fun. An MMO should be played with people IMHO, not alone. You can do it that way though.
