RE: v2 EF Campaign crash

Post by wlmiv »

I am having a similar difficulty. I was in the middle of a campaign when I uploaded version 2.0. Now I cannot move past the last battle I was fighting. Von Rundstedt speaks and then the game crashes.

I saw on the forum that there was a quick fix, but I am baffled by the explanation. It says to "Open the CampaignName.ccd file in a text editor (NOTEPAD)." I have no idea how to find the campaign game or where it is saved. I have looked at the Campaign Series file in my computer, but I do not see any file for saved games. I have also looked at the subfolder for East Front but the only folders there are "pictures" and "special."

Can anyone assist me. I am rather frustrated.

Here is a quick & easy, kludgey fix for the campaign crash bug if your campaign is crashing at the conclusion of the very first campaign scenario:

In your game folder, rename any Victory#.bmp files, as in

Victory0.bmp -> Victory0 DONTUSE.bmp

In a game like West Front, with many different nation sides, it would be easier to cut-and-paste all Victory#.bmp files to a temporary backup folder. In other words, take all Victory#.bmp files out of the picture.

Then, at the Campaign menu, Resume Saves > Resume Mission.

You should be able to get past the end of the first scenario without crash.

It might be necessary to rename your previous .cpn file, as in

Meise OLDER.cpn -> Meise.cpn

which would have you revert back to one turn earlier, but that is probably unnecessary. Probably just leaving your save files as is and resuming your campaign and mission should suffice -- if you've moved out of the way the Victory#.bmp files first!

Note: The Victory#.bmp kludge is not the proximate cause of the crash. But it detours around the impending crash, which has to do with the martial music that would play after the victory/draw/defeat voiceover rant. Who needs that chrome anyway?

Sorry about the bug, but the above steps should work most likely. Most likely, but not certainly, if your campaign is crashing at some point other than the end of the first scenario, crashing in some other way.

Another note: When we have released fixed game engine EXEs, you will want to restore all Victory#.bmp files to their proper places.
In your case, I recommend that you use Windows Explorer to create a temporary backup folder somewhere, then in your top level game folder (for the game where you are experiencing the campaign crash) cut-and-paste all Victory*.bmp files from that folder to the backup folder. That should solve your immediate problem. Note also the second highlight.

Sorry for the problem. Good luck!
