RE: 4-28-42
4.28.42
I'm seeing a lot more enemy subs. I've deployed several ASW TFs and have doubled-down in hot areas with multiple air groups flying naval search both day & night to increase DLs of enemy subs.
I've got the better part of 5 divisions in Java now and everything is converging on Batavia.
Those LCU that I kicked out of Pontianak are in a clear hex. The make a perfect training opportunity for bomber pilots…
My air groups are starting to settle down and really pound on Changsha's AF. I tend to try and train my pilots on soft targets whenever possible. I think pilots train faster on actual air missions then on training missions.
So guess what the garrison size is in Yenen (88,37)? 500AV… Want Hami or Urumchi (two base way up north in the middle of nowhere?) - Hami has a 100AV garrison and Urumchi has a 200AV garrison requirement. There's more like this - I'm just singling out these three. And they've bumped up most of the major China bases by about 100AV... Looking @ the map there is no way for Japan to conduct/win a land war in China using the normal method of paying PP to move troops out of Manchukuo. In my opinion, instead of such hefty garrison levels they should just make this a quite China scenario. In truth, when you look at the game rules for the Lite game that John and Michael just started up, that's pretty much what they've done. Is there a way to reduce those garrison levels back to normal while in a game? I'm thinking about trying to negotiate something with Michael in China but if it would require a re-start then the point would be moot.

Landing on dimes & giving back change
My bad - I meant to add the following to the last post and I apparently clipped myself short...[:(]
So I have a jpeg of a gold star I'll give to the 1st person who correctly identifies why so many brave army pilots of the 64th Sentai were having landing issues... [:D]

Broken PC
Michael PMd me that he broke his computer and needs to take it on for repairs. He should buy an UPS. An UPS, good anti-virus software & regular updates of your OS, plus insuring your PC remains in a fairly cool location of your home are the most important things you can do to protect your PC and providing it a long life.

Operation Horse Pucky
Operational name just for Michael's benefit <grin>
5.2.42 - short-and-sweet
Loading a division @ Kobe for use in the PI.
2 Divisions are closing in on Wenchow in China.
I'm gathering units to form the 1st Division in China.
A division is unloading @ Samarinda
The 5th/A division is unloading in Java
A division and several engineer regiments are closing in on Batavia. I have 2 divisions plus 5 arty units already @ Batavia.
Air production is ramping up nicely for the IJA: Oscars/Sallies/Nick-AIa
A lotta ships in repairs/conversions
Mini-KB is headed for Singapore. So is the Yamato.
I'm pumping out supply TFs as there is very little "fat" near the front lines…
Nice to get turns going again
May 2nd turn sent to Michael. We took over on APR 17 and I'm just now getting the IJA ready to crank things back up.

This turn the action was all around bombing bases and the ASW conflict between the bad allied subs and the good Destroyers and Patrol Boats of the mighty Empire.
@ Terapo Michael threw C Coy/NG Rifles against a fragment of the 1st Raiding Regiment that I have defending my base. Dwayne took it away from him legally and it's mine now by rights. That was proved when his unit disintegrated after trying a shock attack two turns in a row. My WAG is that the troops had little if any supplies and Michael was in no position to supply them so he sent them on a couple of banzai attacks. Silly Michael - everyone knows round-eyes can't do a banzai attack. It's a cultural thing…
Michael has been doing the same thing with the Lark Force @ Gasmata. So far there are still a few living amongst the Larks. Maybe they'll try again next turn.
I've seen subs in the Batavia hex which makes me think Michael is either trying to resupply the base or he's pulling out a cadre for some of the units that are trapped there. I'm sending in a TF to lay mines.
It's my hope that in another day or three I'll actually begin operations in Java & China.
I dropped production by 420 factories for armament in an attempt to generate more HI.

RE: 5.8.42
I find a tanker TF near Vava'u. i'm hoping this is one of Michael's shipping routes that runs through this area.
This turn is mostly sub/asw action with the regular bombing of Changsha, Manila, Batavia, & now Balikpapan.
Still lotsa troop movements as I work to encircle Batavia and Wenchow. And troops @ Samarinda are moving on Balikpapan.
My air frame production is looking better for the IJA - Oscars, Nicks, & Sallies are starting to churn out. it's still gunna take about three months to get to where I want with Bombers and fighters - and of course by then new air frames will be ready. It is what it is.
I'm kinda proud of this tho. When we took over HI was in a nasty spot but now I think I've got things pointed in the right direction. There's still plenty of tweaking to do but for now I'm happy-happy.

RE: 5.10.42
I've been guessing that the pilot selected for the spotter mission gets checked against his recon skill (or maybe the squadron as a whole vs their average recon skill).

RE: 5.10.42
Yeah - that's probably a fair bet - experience and/or recon. They were all set on a recon mission. I'm not sure but my WAG is that moonlight & Thunderstorms might-could have affected the rolls too. There might-could be a limit to the number of spotters allowed? 19 ships with FP were assigned night-recon mission. I think I set altitude to 10k for all air groups.

RE: 5.10.42
I know the numbers of spotters in the TF can be more than one because I recently saw two messages for two different CL using a spotter. My guess is that each firing ship can have one - it's own float plane. They never said so that I recall, but it's what I assume.

I believe it was Symon who stated that only one spotter is needed for the entire TF to benefit, but I have placed multiple FP squadrons on night recon for my bombardments and have seen the same thing in the way of reporting of multiple spotter aircraft engaging in the battle.
What I don't know is if there is any benefit to having more than one spotter.

RE: 5.10.42
It's also possible that the spotter code was changed because I know it was reworked a little during the Betas when there was some problem or other with it. The messages I saw were (from my AAR):ORIGINAL: HansBolter

Of course, messages are programmed in an do not always 100% accurately say what's happening.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5.12.42
I was able to create a gaggle of PT boats @ Semerang and ran them at Michael's small ships at Soerabaja. They did good - kicking the crap out of a pair of similiar small-ship TFs before returning home. with out a scratch. Cool [8D]
I'd say that Michael got the better of me in air combat across the board tho - kind of a tit-4- tat turn.
I'm sending the fast carriers and cruisers out to operate out of Rabaul. They sure are fast - 34 knots. I was trying to find more ships I could convert to AS. Either a lot were lost B4 I took over or they've already been converted to something else. This kinda sucks as I'm used to having a more diverse supply line for my subs.
I've got a small LCU @ Sagigik that will capture that Isle on the next turn. I think that'll be the end of my advance up there and I'll just fortify the chain of islands.
So a question on amphibious assaults w/o the Japanese bonus... Does it really help cut losses to use a zillion small xAK to get everyone on shore the first turn?

I'm still moving things about all over the map. Part was just due to the nature of a pick-up game. A second part was by doing a split side with me playing IJA and Vlad playing IJN. Vlad has stepped back due to work issues so I'm moving and changing a lot of the stuff he was doing. I've got me some plans - ya know what I mean? [:D]
So I took Sagigik isle but it cost me a few ships. My intel was pretty bad and I didn't realize that Michael had a few AFs up there with support and AC. Still - I'm gunna work stat section of the map a little before drawing my line. Using my sneakyness-factor, I changed the ownership of Paramushiro-jima and Ulak to General Command[R]. That'll let me use restricted units along that north route. I'm sending fuel/supplies and construction companies plus additional air support up north.
I also took Balikpapan today. I never get tired of hearing Tokyo Rose! [:D][:D]
Ground combat at Balikpapan (64,97)
Japanese Shock attack
Attacking force 15392 troops, 139 guns, 103 vehicles, Assault Value = 578
Defending force 2926 troops, 47 guns, 5 vehicles, Assault Value = 75
Japanese adjusted assault: 214
Allied adjusted defense: 23
Japanese assault odds: 9 to 1 (fort level 3)
Japanese forces CAPTURE Balikpapan !!!
Allied aircraft
no flights
Allied aircraft losses
A-24 Banshee: 1 destroyed
Do-24K-1: 3 destroyed
Buffalo PR.I: 1 destroyed
5.13.42
Combat modifiers
Defender: forts(+), disruption(-), fatigue(-), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+)
Japanese ground losses:
216 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 20 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Vehicles lost 18 (1 destroyed, 17 disabled)
Allied ground losses:
1221 casualties reported
Squads: 44 destroyed, 17 disabled
Non Combat: 54 destroyed, 18 disabled
Engineers: 13 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 31 (27 destroyed, 4 disabled)
Vehicles lost 5 (5 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units retreated 4
Units destroyed 1
Assaulting units:
1st Tank Regiment
38th Division
2nd Raiding Regiment
21st Ind.Mixed Bde /2
Defending units:
VI KNIL Battalion
I Samarinda Cdo
Balikpapan MLD Base Force
Balikpapan Defenses
1e-VLG-I Sup Afd
So now I'm setting up air support and CAP over Balikpapan and will soon have a few extra divisions to push deeper into the DEI. Bwa-ha-ha-ha!

RE: 5.13.42
Just a FYI: It looks like Michael & I might be starting a new BTS:Lite game from scratch. We're into some funky negotiations that has Michael planning to make some changes via the editor. Once we've ironed things out we'll see where we stand. For myself, I'm excited to pull a rematch from Michael, who I last played back in the days of WiTP using a Mod by Alikchi that was called Iron Storm.

RE: 5.13.42
This game will end. In truth - I think I can still cause a lot of hurt to Michael in this game but expansion will be dicey due to loss of the amphibious bonus plus plenty of time for Michael to fort up. The biggest whine I have with this mod is the increase garrison requirements in China/India. I came in having negotiated tossing out the PP requirement for moving units across borders only to find I'd basically be spending another 5 divisions or so of troops tied down to garrison duty. I've been sporting that hurt-look in my eyes every time I looked at China... [8|]
Michael wants a game to the end. I want to win - lol. I'm looking for ideas/thoughts in the new AAR I've opened up. If you have some favorite strategies, i'd love it if you could share them with me. <grin>

I'll pop in there one-sided so I can speak freely. Not sure I'll be any help! [:D]
