The CW can build 2 very decent FTR3s in J/F 1940 and unlike the 1940 axis fighters, can reach the 3 box.
I wouldn't call them decent - they may have 5 factors but they roll next-worst. And they won't show up until JA. And then, you have to get them there. And to guarantee getting the best 2 as fast as possible, you have to spend 13 BPs for planes and pilots and build the crappy 6-range FTR3 as well.

I try to get the 8-range and 7-range US lend lease FTR2s to the CW too, but you have to be lucky to pluck them. (Usually I end up pulling out all the Defiants first...)

Ah yes, we don't play with that option as FTR3s are extremely weak otherwise. Admittedly I find them a little overpowered without that option.

Option 53: (Twin-engined fighters) In air-to-air combat during the day, all front fighters with an orange air-to-air rating achieve one result less than normal when the front enemy fighter in the combat does not have an orange air-to-air rating. In these cases an AX result becomes a DX, a DX becomes an AA, an AA becomes a DA and so on. A DC result is unaffected.

Someone on the one of the forums did an analysis of the 'next-worse' results vs normal and claims that the overall effect is close to a minus 3 to the A2A factor. In other words, worse than a column shift to the left on the A2A combat table.

One saving grace in MWiF to this point is there's no Bounce Combat option.

So they fight better as bombers than as fighters.

Why is this a "saving grace"? Bounce combat is the option I miss second-most.
I thought I knew how to play this game....

It would be even worse for the CW, that's why. They would yield a lot more DCs than they can take advantage of.
