I would say never go cheep with your Anti-Virus.
I recommend Kaspersky Anti-Virus.
It is built by the Russians and they know their business when it comes to hacking and virus.
Don't worry that it's Russian, if they want they can hack anything on the planet.

I would also recommend the built-in Windows Defender; light, free and it runs well unlike other AVs who are not yet ready for Windows 10.
But layer your defense; use MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit (free version) to run alongside WD and use the free Malwarebytes AntiMalware for the occasional on-demand scan.
Finally, take an image of your drive regularly and you will be fine.
I was in need of a Malware program so thanks all for this suggestion. Just added it and it took out 1,626 malware. It has been a while since I have had that extra level of protection. I feel better now about surfing.

1626 threats...wow! If I were you I would download and run the "CCleaner" (if you haven't yet) to clean off all the junk on your computer.

I use NOD32 and I'm not having any problems with it

Try Total Security 360 essential. It´s free and uses the avira and Bit Defender engine.

I've used bitdefender the past couple of years.
Overall I like, couple of quirks but much much less intrusive than Norton.
I've used ESET too with good results but that was a while ago and not sure on current quality.

I too recommend Kaspersky. I have been using it for 4 or 5 years. My current PC is running WIN 8.1

I know you are looking for "cheap" or "free" but System Mechanic Pro is on sale for 1/2 price right now and it includes anti-virus protection with a host of other maintenance tools. They are also always running "get an extra year added for $15" specials so you only get hit with the big purchase price once. All updates and new versions are free, once you're on board you can just cruise along with no worries about updates. They had a Windows 10 version out quickly and no problems.

I've been using it for about a decade now and very satisfied with all the tools and diagnostics. They continue to improve the product and add features with every free upgrade.

I do have it. But for some reason it wipes out my passwords from all of my sites I go to. So I stopped using it. Maybe I don't do it correctly. But Malwarebytes took them out. It also had a clearly marked button where I could select to save passwords
RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software
Don't go cheap, read the reviews and pick which one you like the best. Spending an extra $20-40 dollars is worth it if you don't have to spend real money on someone cleaning your system and removing viruses and such. Don't compromise on your security or your files, a few extra dollars spent now is worth avoiding a future headache

I thought AVG was no longer freeware?
Just started using it several months ago. Still free.

for most people, with win 10 anyway, the standard version that comes built in plus ccleaner and malwarebytes etc will be fine for normal every days use

Exactly the way I feel and the same anti virus I use.
After a bad infection a few years ago (I let my anti virus lapse while searching for a better deal..BIG MISTAKE!!) I decided if I can't afford a good anti virus then I can't afford to surf the web.
Keep in mind hackers and peeps that wish to do us harm are ever more sophisticated so the user needs
to be ahead of the curve.
If you chose to pay for Kaspersky get the free 30 day trial.
Near the end of the trial you should get a better deal offered. Others I like for performance are Trend Micro
but not a fan of their customer service.
Not a fan at all of Norton.

A friendly suggestion...enter your password(s) yourself each time you visit your sites, it is much safer.

Bit defender is what I use since Avira became "troublesome"
